I don't know, I consider a lot of these movies to have just that: "halfway original ideas".
Sad that few seem to want to accept that some of this shit flops because its shit, not because they're original or not.
My objection isn't really with how original an idea is when it makes it to the cinema but it galls me to take from such recent, GOOD films when there's plenty of older films, books, comics, etc dying to be made or remade or even given a sequel or prequel. Stuff from this century should still be off-limits unless it sucked somehow. Both Swedish films were critically acclaimed. Their only crime was not being in English.
It would also be a different thing to take The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and make it completely American. Let Me In, equally needless remake of Let The Right One In, at least changed to an American locale. However, Girl's still being filmed in Sweden. HUH? We already had this just last year in authentic Swedish.
It would also be different to remake both films with major stars. The Girl remake has Daniel "saddlebag face" Craig--not really among the Clooneys, Jolies, and such as a major box office draw. The eponymous girl and the two kids in Let Me In are nobodys. In fact, the major stars in Let Me In are... Richard Jenkins and Elias Koteas.
