TPM was structured the most like a SW movie of all the prequels. It had huge flaws, but it was at least familiar. The other 2 (which I maintain AOTC is the worst of the three) were not. Revenge looked more like the SW I knew, but it didn't feel like it.

AOTC was so bad. Not Mummy 3 bad where I wanted to legit walk out of the theater but bleh. Will never watch Revenge. Don't care. Still haven't seen TFA. Don't care. If Merla wants to pay for my ticket again, I'll go to the next one. Because I like spending time with my sister and keeping her company. Well... I take that back. I won't go to Solo. I just fucking won't.

Also, are there any musical pieces that even stand out in these new flicks? Even TPM had Duel of the Fates. That shit was badass. So sad TPM wasn't a much better film. I was gonna say "a much better, Jar Jar-less film" but Jar Jar was so fuckin' funny outside the context the actual movie... even though he was CG cancer inside of it.

They should just go ahead and remake the prequels already. I never figured out why everyone is talking about St*r WarzzZZ but I didn't read the whole thread either.

Black Panther was excellent. The main reason for me was Killmonger. Yeah, they kept with the Marvel movie cliche of the heroes enemy basically being a different version of themselves, that's true. They did it with a character who's motivations seemed real and who's actions didn't seem all that evil, really.

Watched The Shape of Water as well. Not GDT's best work but still very much his sort of film. Discussing fish anatomy was an interesting scene.

I agree. They shouldn't touch anything anymore. They would honestly be better off just fucking off to another portion of the galaxy after Episode 8. Of course that won't happen because they gots toys to sell. But I'd rather follow some rando rebel in their xwing getting sucked into a wormhole and ending up in another part of the universe where the technology is different, we get more aliens and sentient droids, and there's a different sort of evil other than an empire with a damn space star that shoots a giant laser. I mean, movie plots can be on a smaller scale. It doesn't always have to be some "epic" save-the-world bullshit.

Watching some of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. A visual treat in term of how cg was used but rancid in every other aspect. Story's a mess, dialogue's a mess, music's a mess, acting's a fucking mess. The two leads really killed this film more than anything else: they come off as two unlikable, arrogant brats. The guy's supposed to be kinda like this funny, charming rake and he's like that dude in your algebra class that needs to copy your homework because he was totally smoking weed after his job at Burger King but he doesn't even need to work because his parents will support him forever even if they need to take out a heloc. Dane Whatshisname has bags under his eyes, a doughy face and body, a shitty voice that sounds like his mouth is stuffed with tissues, and all of the comedic timing and wit of a drunk Amy Schumer. Meanwhile, Cara's just boring. Great body, but boring. No extremes to her emotions. Dane's character is about to die and she sounds like she's a Time Warner tech scheduling your cable install. We really needed a younger version of Mila Jojovich, a woman who could play the "cool but still flirty, strong, exotic beauty" trope. These characters are supposed to love each other and they have zero chemistry. At least if the leads were hot and charming and had chemistry, there would be a reason for the viewer to actually invest in them. As it is, you're left hoping for the next visual spectacle to appear because they're so dull and lifeless.

Omg, Dane's action scene with a sword was utter shit. Two degrees removed from Star Wars kid. They really needed to get a stuntman who knew his way with a blade and then shoop Dane's face on him.

"The Demon House", newest movie/docu by Zak Bro-gans. Def not another episode of Ghost Adventures. Was it scary? Hmmmm a little. I was disappointed that they didnt do the good ol "stay in the house overnight while using 20 different machines to detect ghosts" bits. It was more like Zak stayed there by himself just for a few hours, with almost no machine (did he even have one? I cant remember).

Actually, the guy on the left (Mike) sounds like a fan of Ghost Adventures, and he shares your disappointment that the movie wasn't more like the show. That's what I got from it, anyway. The guy on the right (Jay) thinks it's all hilarious bullshit, though.

I ended up seeing Ready Player One after all. You know, it was okay. Towards the end you could tell they wanted the audience to feel uplifted and inspired, but it comes across as pure cheese. Definitely one of Spielberg's better recent efforts, however.

That movie looked like it would've made a terrific short but I wondered how it was gonna be an entire motion picture. That's also because it reminded of Fantastic Mr. Fox (in both visuals and general feel) and how fucking boring I found the second half of that film.

Ah! I love Fantastic Mr. Fox, that's why I had been looking forward to Isle of Dogs ever since it was first announced.

Way too many characters. Characters are introduced and then promptly forgotten until they're later briefly necessary to the plot. Said plot is all over the place, it just jumps around incessantly. The villains were toothless, with the final confrontation feeling like a complete afterthought.

I can't remember laughing once. I could tell when jokes were being made, but none of them were ever amusing.

Honestly, the dialogue was all the way up its own ass, and for a Wes Anderson film, that's saying a lot.

The cultural appropriation thing is tiresome, too, so that was another strike I had against this film. I pretty much use Scarjo in particular as a warning flag for shit not to bother with.

RE: the cultural appropriation thing. Everything is a synthesis of everything else, and, as long as the intention is not to demean, picking and choosing is a part of that. People are being willfully impossible to please...one should should be able to tell a story without being raked over the coals over whose voice was used or how exactingly detailed the ethnic portrayals are or are not. It's a movie. If it sucks, gripe away. If it doesn't, it's a chink in the armor that could well deserve comment and discussion but not the wave of freak-outs I've been reading about.

Intent doesn't have any bearing on whether it's cultural appropriation or not. Nice people can do it, too. That being said, I've sat through enough cringy love letters to other cultures that I'd just as soon rather not bother when I sniff one. Anyway, Wes Anderson just chose his friends and threw a few ethnic randoms in there so he'd get white strokes for "muh diversity." It's like, thanks, Wes, but I've already seen Kubo and the Two Strings.

I wasn't bothered by Wes Anderson telling a story set in Japan. The movie has way bigger problems than that.

One thing I found aggressively frustrating was that much of the Japanese dialogue is spoken and never translated... at all! As if the audience is meant to simply intuit what's being said based on character reactions, etc. Subtitles are used sparingly. Most plot-critical Japanese dialogue is delivered in English by various on-screen translator characters, over-top the Japanese speaker as if we're watching some live broadcast! And yes, that's how the story is framed, but I don't give a fuck!

It's like the director was afraid the audience might complain about Japanese characters delivering English dialogue, but then he was also afraid the audience might complain about having to read so much dialogue, and his solution was a bunch of non-committal garbage.

And it's funny you should mention Scarjo, she's barely in it. Introduced early on as a hot lady dog love interest for the main dog, then never seen again until the end where she is clearly the "prize" at the end of the adventure, even though their exchange goes out of its way to tell us, "Oh no no! She is most certainly not a played out film trope!"
