Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was adapated for animation. In a nutshell, if you liked the original book, then this movie will drive you batshit crazy. Except for the setting and the general progression, it's not close.  They completely and unnecesssarily changed who the villain was, and they turned Catwoman a main character when she wasn't even in the original. Why make adaptations that make half of it up from whole cloth? Just call it Bat Dodgers in the 19th Century if you can't resist gutting someone else's story and turning it into what is basically sanctioned fanfiction.

HAHAHA, I just went to read spoilers on who the villain is and WHAT. THE. FUCK. Just why? I don't get when adaptations do this shit.

Yeah. I started to suspect they were going that way when they failed to introduce Uncle Jake.

Oh wow. I was not familiar with the source material at all, but I thought the movie was dogshit anyway. Learning that it's a totally different story is just... well, I guess it doesn't matter.

You know what was distracting as hell though? All the fucking CG corner-cutting. Every fucking horse and buggy -- as well as the driver! All kinds of background elements. Man, these things must be dirt cheap to produce now. Almost entirely profit, I'll bet.

I can't recall if we talked about it here, but did you watch that Batman and Harley Quinn thing? Holy shit was that fucking weird. Tonally all over the place. One moment they want it to be "adult" and the next they're making protracted fart jokes. And then the climactic showdown was undercut by some slapsticky bullshit. Like I said, fucking weird as hell.

And all of a sudden, the ever-lovin' SWAMP THING saves the day, and he's so underground that he doesn't even care. But it had Bats and Harley in it, so the money prints itself.

I barely notice the CG stuff these days, since everything has it. The fact that they can't tell a decent story anymore drives me crazier than that.

As I get closer and closer to middle-age, I begin to hate the things I used to love twenty years ago. Batman and Harley Quinn are two of those things. I still <3 Kevin Conroy as Batman but I just roll my eyes at this new shit now. DC needs to exhume Dwayne McDuffie and throw him in the Lazarus pit because DC's animated offerings steadily sank into the toilet after he died. Maybe DC should just toss a sackful of money at Keagan Michael Key and see if those talents run in the family.

No, but Im getting pissed at (black )people's reaction to it. I dont want to sound racist but if white people made such a big deal about a movie with only white people in it, they would be called racist, nazis etc etc.

White people make big deals about movies with only white people in them all the time. It's just seen as normal fandom. Let black people have this. :-*

Black Panther was pretty good, but it's not as good as some would have you believe. Most Marvel films have that in common.

Yeah, I totally saw that ep and I was like "yep, totally lines up with what I expected." My Marvel fatigue's set in a long time ago. I don't even remember the last Marvel film I actually watched in the theater. Cap 2, I think? Yeah, I think it was Winter Soldier. Don't think I've even watched anything that came after The Avengers. Oh, no, part of Civil War but I was so bored and not paying attention that I don't count that one.

I meant to see Thor 3 in the theater, but I wasted my almost quarterly theater trip on Last Jedi (again, BAH). Now that I've seen it (thank you iTunes leak) I wish I had seen it in the theater and will be buying the disc version. Before that I'd gone to see GotG2 and Wonder Woman.

I actually meant to see Thor 3 but it just wasn't a great time for me when it came out in the theater. By the time I had more time to go see it, it was out of the Alamo Drafthouse I would've gone to. I might still watch that one if it comes out on Netflix and I have a couple of hours to spare.

Because it was Guardians of the Galaxy starring Thor. I like Guardians in a Guardians movie, but not in a Thor movie.

I don't know. It was undeniably biting on Guardians, but I still liked it. I'd say the previous Thor movies were mostly trash by comparison.

And hey, no Natalie Portman in this one! That's gotta be a plus for just about anyone, right?

Ok, no Portman is a good thing. But I liked the first Thor. This one just felt like a copy of something more successful.

Some of them. Seems like Marvel is good at first movies for superheroes not so much at the rest. Only exception to that seems to be Captain America.

I almost wished they saved Civil War for another team-up movie and went another direction with Cap 3. Cap 2 was just the right balance but Cap 3 was so dull. MEH.

Merla and Schmoo saw Wrinkle in Time. I think they liked it. But Merla also liked Last Jedi so much she watched it twice willingly. So make of it what you will.

I didn't hate Last Jedi. There were things I didn't like about it, sure. Rose and Finn can both GTFO, for instance. Other stuff. Hmm. It was still better than the prequels!

Wrinkle, I haven't seen it, nor do I have the desire to, ever. I don't know how to describe my distaste for it without sounding incredibly pretentious. When I saw the trailer, everything about it just absolutely screamed that it was trying to be all things to all audiences. All that did was make it utterly repugnant to me. No thanks.

I have no doubt the source material was a big deal back in the day, but so was Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars stuff. Doesn't mean that material makes for a good movie today.

Man. John Carter sucked.

I didn't hate John Carter, but I haven't rewatched it, either, so it must not have had much going for it other than my not hating it.

But I unrelentingly, religiously, unapologetically hate Last Jedi with the fire of a thousand suns.

Same. I'm trying to put into words why it felt that way. Not so much with how they casted in terms of race, but maybe who they casted (Oprah, Mindy, and Reese... eh, meh?) and how the movie feels like a celebration of something instead of a mystery or an adventure. Something that feels like it's celebrating without earning it chafes me. I remember kids reading A Wrinkle in Time at school and it was never something I ever had the urge to read or any curiosity about. The movie made me even less interested in the book, which I didn't know was possible.

I actually liked The Phantom Menace more than I liked The Last Jedi. I feel bad for the actors playing Rose and Finn tho'. It's obvious they were stuffed in there because diversity111la. They didn't give them shit to do or any true place within the story. They could've been thrown off a cliff and it wouldn't have matter a jot. And the Reylo shit is genuinely stomach-turning.

I will say the sequence with the horse creatures running through the streets was very reminiscent of the pod racing scene.

That's a bad thing!

Also, I'm probably reading way too much into it, but the character Oprah plays in Wrinkle seems to lean a little too heavily into how I imagine Oprah actually views herself: an omniscient fairy godmother-like entity.

"I'm here to tell you how to think and feel, and you'll be grateful for it, trust me!"
