I did not know until just today that Rurouni Kenshin (as in the series, not the Ovas or something) had two English dubs.  Or maybe I did and filed it away somewhere unseen.  Either way, I decided to watch some eps on Crackle for kicks and there it is: a completely different English dub.  Kaoru sounds 12 and they call her Kory.  And Saito is Satto.  Ho ho.  Oh.

Ha ha, shit, I just realized they're calling him "Kenshie."  lol  And the kid (don't remember his name) just made an Abraham Lincoln joke of all things.  Faye, you're a well-traveled Kenshin nut, right?  You ever hear this dub before?

Funny thing, Ive been watching the english dub of RK for the last month (while I was in Germany, havent watched it here in London). Im up to episode 80 (of 95). Its on youtube btw (all the episodes). I dont think the dub Im watching is the one that you are cause it isnt as bad but its still bad. Like I said before all dubs suck. THey dont even care about pronouncing the japanese words/names the right way :'(

Yes, it's the one on Youtube.  Or at least on American Youtube.  And it's full of pronounciation inconsistencies.  The dub the U.S. had gotten years ago on TV and that's available on the official DVDs here is actually different.  Kaoru sounds a little older, Saito sounds deeper, and Sanosuke sounds "studlier" (I don't know how else to put that).  Not perfect, but far closer in meaning at least to the Japanese.  The pronounciations there needed some work, too, though.  But at least they called Saito, Kenshin, and Kaoru by the right names.  And they didn't call Sanosuke "Sah-noh-sooky."

Is it the one that has Cho with the southern accent? I wanted to die when I first heard him. I mean they are at least trying with him, since he is from Osaka and that def counts as a "southern" accent in Japan.
But thats all.

Okay, so I looked into it and it appears the one with Southern-accent Cho is the dub we got in the States, so if that's the one you're watching it's the same one we got here.

The second dub, the "international" dub is owned by Sony and is available on Youtube (at least US Youtube) as Samurai X.  Cho has no type of discernable accent at all.  He just sounds like a poorly voiced villain in an old early 90's dub or something.

So wait why would they make two official dubs? No comprende.

He's gonna Dragon Ball Z Kai-ing his own work maybe?  Or perhaps the art was shittier in the beginning?  I've never read the manga.  Was it, Faye-Faye?

I don't know either.  I'll let you know if I find anything.  Either one of two things I'd imagine:
One dub was made first and the rights to that dub lapsed or weren't cost-effective, so a new one was made.
Or...
That shittier dub came first and it was decided a less-shitty dub needed to be done.

Hey, dug this up from a TV Tropes page.  Seems accurate:

Quote
A rarity for a show of its size, Rurouni Kenshin has two complete dubs. The first dub produced was the "Samurai X" dub (produced by Sony for Animax and recorded at an unknown LA studio), which though technically uncut still toned down the dialogue significantly. The other dub was produced by Media Blasters and recorded by BangZoom studio in LA. The Media Blasters version is probably more well-known in North America because it aired on Toonami and is (well, was) available on DVD, but Sony's Samurai X, previously unknown in North America despite being recorded there, is becoming better known due to running on streaming sites Hulu and Crackle. This is perhaps the most literal case of dubs going directly in competition with each other on this page so far. Interestingly, Richard Cansino voices the title character in both dubs.

Allah knows why. But hes definitely doing it at this moment. They are also thinking about doing the Enishi saga (last part of the manga that didnt get the anime treatment, and the most badass imo)

So the better one is the one done by Media Blasters right?

It is hard for me to watch dubs anymore. I've gone so much Sub only lately...mainly because there aren't dubs of the things I watch and they have to have fan made subs for them. So I've just got use to it. I use to be pro-dub, but now I even put like my Godzilla movies on subs, even though the dubs exist there.

Well, it's like this for anything coming out of Japan these days, really: if something new interests you, you can watch it now (fansubs), or you can wait and watch it...maybe never (licensed DVD/Blu-ray). North American dubbers can't possibly keep up, and thus have fallen by the wayside.

Heh, "Nina". Gotta love those damned cell phone keyboards. Ironically, I was playing it back on the hotel TV through my phone immediately before posting that note.

I watch subs primarily for the reasons joe mentioned. At this point the only discs I buy are those few that make it the cut and I wish to support financially.

To Love Ru Darkness has been fun...but not as much as the previous season. I liked Motto's episodes of three tangentially-related vignettes of service better, and I got tired of the sisterhood crap after awhile...like Rito, I'm partial to Haruka.

Samurai Girls was fun...the art style was great, and hooters. I'm usually not a fan of the period samurai bullshit, but this was about as far from that as you can get in that its more mystical than martial arts and, again, hooters.

Haganai season 2 was a good continuation, leaving off with a substantial cliffhanger. I could probably read the scanlated manga to find out how it ends up, but it's not that much of a nail-biter...season three will start with everything more or less being reset with a minor lean forward.

Sankarea has been interesting. A dude with a zombie chick fetish meets a chick who wants to be a zombie, then becomes one through his help. Now they're trying to figure out how that shit works while avoiding her dad who's pissed that she's dead and has rejected his very disturbing form of fatherly love. Waiting for the rest of the BDs to be encoded to finish the series. Weird show, but still...interesting.

Ben-To was fucking stupid. Next.

Oh, shit, so was Maken-Ki. Staying away from similarly titled shows from now on.

Vividred Operation was a fun show except for the Strike Witches-esque fascination with showing underage female panty-shots. Yuck, no thanks, but the rest was good enough that I could overlook that solitary failing. Kinda-sorta magical/super-science girls fight otherworldly thingamabobs to save the world--'s energy supply. Okay, make that a two-fold failing.

Finally finished downloading the second season of Horizon, but I haven't started watching it yet.

Oh, oh, and I saw Little Witch Academia.  Which is a 30 min or so short by Trigger (which was formed by two dudes who left Gainax).  Anyway, really liked it.  It's on YouTube with subs.
