Ha, I just saw an episode of GITS:SAC because I felt like watching it after rereading my GITS manga.  I like the manga so much better.  OT, but has anyone read Appleseed?  I'm thinking of trying it because I needs sumthin-sumthin to read.

Darker than Black was very good, but I don't see how it could be continued without feeling contrived, silly... meh, I can't think of the right word for it.  But it seems like it'd be downhill from that final season 1 ep onwards.

Indeed. I am looking forward to finding out what happens, but Netflix does not have it.

I've got DtB, but I haven't watched anything but the first episode yet. It didn't grab me, so I put it on the back-burner.

Rewatching Love Hina right now. Shut up.

I watched all of Soul Eater on the Netflix. I liked the idea behind the show but it just ended up being boring.

Ha, I just saw an episode of GITS:SAC because I felt like watching it after rereading my GITS manga.  I like the manga so much better.

GIS: SAC is one of the few animes I can actually sit down and watch anymore. I really liked SAC, but never read the manga. SAC was actually one of the things that inspired me in the project I'm working on. I even went so far to also make my main character a Major. Course that's where the similarities end.

Anyway, that and Cowboy BeBop are ones I will watch, unless it's blind choice and I don't know what the anime is about and just find it on TV.

I watched the Mushroom ep of Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim last night...first time I'd watched any of the series in years. I remembered not liking it, but I really enjoyed seeing it again eight or so years removed.

Did I mention I finally watched all of Trigun? For the first time? I had only seen a smattering of episodes before then.

I'm trying out Gunslinger Girl now. It's good, but very slow ... and subtly pedophilic.

Also, just watched the current set of episodes for Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. We will fight as one.

Every time my enthusiasm for anime starts to build back up again, a bunch of shit comes around and smashes it down into the ground.

Panty and Stocking was the only remotely decent thing I've seen in years, but as Beck pointed out, it lost steam in the second half. The recap episode really threw me for a loop. A recap episode, in a 13-episode series. Fucking get real, Gainax.

Anyway, having completed that I was looking forward to anything that might hold my interest in the new crop of shows -- you know how an assload of new anime comes out like clockwork every three months -- but once again it's mostly garbage.

There's one show I might actually stick with, one whose manga source material has been a hit with the One Piece/Naruto/Bleach weeaboo set for a while already, and it's called Beelzebub. It's unapologetic, lowest-common-denominator, high-fiving shonen douchebag pablum, but I find it strangely charming. The same thing happened to me with a show a few years back called the Law of Ueki. There's no reason for me to like these shows, and every reason for me to revile them, and yet for some reason I can't look away. It's like my subconscious yearns for this back-to-basics, DBZ-esque crap and I'm powerless to ignore it.

If you haven't already, chell out Beelzebub and let me know how much you hate it.

I really ought to rewatch Trigun.  That was one show where I saw a good number of episodes but not enough to follow the plot later on so when I saw the ending I didn't know what the fuck was going on.

I feel like Trigun betrayed me. It was so good in the beginning, and I loved it. It just showed so much promise and it didn't look half bad to boot. But then it ran into that snag where the anime catches up with the manga and everything turns to shit. Fuck Trigun. I own it. And it owned me. In a bad way.

And the manga's weird 'cause his art's so janky.

That reminds me of my early days of anime ownership. I had Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop which I still love despite it being turned into hipster fodder on AS. Evangelion, which was cool but a little too preachy and artsy fartsy for me but I know Shwiggs worships it so I will say no more. And of course Utena, for which you have my eternal gratitude, best recommendation evah. Slayers, which good God has not aged well at all but I'll always have a special place for it in my heart.

And that reminds me of something else, I saw that someone is rereleasing FLCL on Blu-Ray, and I was like, "How can get they do that, it wasn't even letterboxed?" so of course there'll just be black bars on the sides of the screen which is LAAAAAAME.

To this day I never saw the end of Utena.  I just saw the first story arc.  Netflix doesn't even have the Black Rose saga or whatever.  I actually watched the first Slayers series a year or so back and it was kinda okay.  Haven't revisited any more than that.  Although I did see a few eps of that latest Slayers with the "Naga"-armor.  Didn't care to see how it ended however.

Oh fuck, I couldn't even believe that new Slayers shit. I was all pumped for it, and then I saw it and it was all, "Hey, dude! I know it's been twenty years or whatever but chell me out I haven't changed!"

I'm like update your look for fuck's sake.

Even the first series was getting repetitive.  They do stupid shit, Lina does some giant-ass Dragon Giga Slave Whatchamacallit, then they do it all over again.  Except it was after the first series that it just got old.  Rezo was awesome.  They couldn't top fucking Rezo.

When you said Rezo I though Xelloss. They were both purple-haired mages, honest mistake.

See the first time I watched Slayers I was a total anime nooblet so I didn't realize how hackneyed it already was, even at that point. Mid-'90s or whatevs.

All I could see was the fantasy mashed up with the comedy and, "Oh Lordy, two of my favorite things!"

I've seen a few of those...it's ok. It's pretty much the typical Japanese Samarui story, but there like steam punk battle suits and flying ships and stuff.

Too late.

Of all the complaints I've heard, the former has never been one of them. "Pretentious"..."nonsensical"..."trippy"..."f'ed up ending"...I can see these, but "preachy"?

BTW, for you Trigun people, you know there's a new movie, right? Come to think of it, the BluRay's been released in Japan, so there should be some fansubs floating around....see y'all later.

Samurai 7 is one of the shows I have all the DVDs for, and most of them are still in their plastic. Never got past the first few episodes.

As I understand it, it's just an extended rehashing of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. So if you're a fan of that, and anime, it should be good, I guess?

As for the preachy Eva thing, I really have no way of backing that up. I request to have it stricken from the record.

Forgot about the Trigun movie. Downloading.

There was only one group who subbed it, but it's no longer available on their site since Funimation announced licensing it.  But I found it elsewhere and am currently burning it to DVD to watch later tonight. I wonder if they tried to get any of the original dub cast back together for it? I know Wolfwood's VA said they did it without him.

I watched the Trigun movie this morning (between 1AM and 3AM), and I liked what I saw. The main problems I had with it are endemic to all movies based on TV shows:
1) you have to had enjoyed it previously,
2) you have to have watched enough of the original show to understand how the characters relate, and
3) movie spin-offs are essentially a stand-alone feature-length episode.

Beyond that, it was great. Remember how the original animation quality was sort of faded and occasionally weak? This was excellent throughout...vibrant, sharp, yet everyone looked the same. Since the same studio did the movie and the series, there wasn't any jarring differences between the characters, though I think Vash's red overcoat had a lot of black on it this time. I may just not remember it being there, but it was a good contrast. It really looked good.

The four main characters--Vash, Wolfwood, Meryl, and Milly--were all there, but the insurance girls didn't figure very heavily at all here. The new characters introduced were pretty cool; Gasback, an older robber seeking revenge on those who betrayed him, was the standard big-guy Trigun enemy, but with a more interesting look than, say, the vast majority of the Gung-Ho Guns. Amelia, the female supposed bounty-hunter who serves as Vash's crush throughout, is another new character with one of the more predictable axes to grind in history.

The story...well, as I mentioned, it was an extended stand-alone episode, but that's okay. What I'm wondering is if it's supposed to have taken place within the original anime continuity, a new, singular one all it's own; or if it's more based on Trigun Maximum and heralding a potential new series? Given the original wasn't popular in Japan, I'd say no, but anything's possible these days, given the overwhelming quantity of tripe I've seen being fansubbed lately.

Bottom line: if you liked Trigun, you'll enjoy this movie. If you were meh towards it, you'll be meh yet again. If you hated the series, you need some LOVE AND PEACE.

I'm already "meh" to the IDEA of a Trigun movie so I should probably pass on the movie itself.  I have Samurai 7 in my stream queue for a bored day.

Yeah, I dunno. Usually when I start watching something, then decide to finish watching it later, I never do. I think my appreciation of Trigun is pretty dessicated at this point.

Granted, a Trigun movie would have been great, say, in 2003, when it hit it big here. But it's here now, anyway. Now I want to rewatch the series. I just so happened to buy those two expensive-ass tin box sets years ago, back when I had money to blow on stuff I'd never watch again. Well, until now.

I'm already "meh" to the IDEA of a Trigun movie so I should probably pass on the movie itself.  I have Samurai 7 in my stream queue for a bored day.

I'm wary of any anime with samurai in it. But that's just me. I'm trying to think of a show I liked with samurai that isn't Ninja Scroll (I realize that's ninja and not samurai...like there's a big difference ).

I liked Samurai Champloo, for the most part. And Basilisk was okay... but wait, those were ninja again.
