Dig this though. The credits say the movie is based off a book. Now I want to read the book.

Holy shit.

Has anyone here seen Dead Leaves or heard of it? I haven't seen it, but I saw the trailer on the KARAS dvd. It's basically Tank Girl: The Anime. On acid.

A google search of the series explains what I mean far better than I can.
Or the You tube trailer for those of high bandwith.

I save final judgement on KARAS when I see the rest of it. But I don't have high hopes.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Holy carps, Merla and I began watch Saiyuki season two.  What a piece of shit.  It's so bad, it's laughably bad.  It's like they used someone's fanfic for the script.  A handsome new villain-- CHECK, with two different colored eyes-- CHECK, a magic sword --CHECK, emo handcuffs-- CHECK, fashionable robe-- CHECK, and he calls himself a god-- CHECK.  And he has two god buddies?  CHECK CHECK!  He invades the main villain's castle and dispatches the two best fighters on the spot. CHECK!  He sends out minion after minion to do work he could do in ten seconds just so he can attempt to look cool sitting boredly on his throne.  CHECK!!!  He wants Goku to get stronger in a strangely homo-way, yet he spares the Sanzo party when he has no reason to.  He just wants Goku, so kill the others on the spot!  "Gods" are popping up left and right and they're dispatched just like the demons in the show.  FTW?  Then why are they gods if it's so damn easy?

And then they focused a whole episode on those losers that impersonated the Sanzo party back in the first season.  But it was like we were suppose to feel sorry for the losers and take them seriously.  They're comic relief!  Focus on the damn Sanzo party, the show's about them.  So far, one passable episode out of eight.  Hideous.

Holy shit. I just downloaded Eiken. This shit's full of nothing but fanservice. All the girls, even the 12 year olds, have fucking double-G breasts.

We had a free preview of Encore action and this was on. I couldn't even get through the first episode. I kept thinking there must be a story in here someplace...but nope.

Somehow, I managed to catch parts of Eiken last night on 2 different channels.  Eps 1 & 2 maybe?  Rama, did you see the one with the yogurt slide?   ::)  GURLZ with WHITE STUFF all over them, dur hur!  And the one chick who always had something like a banana or sausage on a stick in her mouth.  Funny one or two times, but by the 15th, I'm yelling, "Jeez, I GET IT already!"

Started "Kyo Kara Maoh!"  Like it so far.  If I had to pick one thing that bothers me slightly, is that this dude sees a flying winged skeleton and has such a blah reaction.  It's a fucking flying skeleton.  For once, I'd like to see stuff with genuine reactions-- people screaming, foaming at the mouth, and shitting themselves-- when they come across weird supernatural crap.

I just saw the anime that Joe has as his sig pic. It's one of those high school comedy bits. Cynical, emo teacher with psycho students, including obsessed stalker lady and anti-social girl who wears a blanket and looks like she's from the Ring.

I also found out I'm missing out on Lucky Star. It's as random and irrelevant as Auzmanga Daioh, as both were adapted from 4-panel comedy manga. It also has a really addictive cheerleader dance intro. I'm not sure what's with dancing in credits... first you had a bit in the intro of Tenjou Tenge, then the elaborate dance in Haruhi Suzumiya's ending credits, and now this. Lucky Star is a high school comedy and all the characters are constantly chibified. The main character, the blue-haired girl, is an anime geek and likes playing hentai games. o_O

I saw the newer dub of Akira the other night and hated ever minute of it. The voices lacked the character of the first dub and were rather flat. The Colonel didn't sound mean, Kaneda didn't sound like a smart ass (which Cam Clarke pulled off great), and I liked how in the orginal they tried to make "The Numbers" sound old and child like at the same time (cause they were.) but in this one they threw that out and just made them sound like kids.

Also the script wasn't as good either. Some classics lines like "Who you suppose to be? The Funeral director?" where replaced with flat and unclever lines like "Hey! What's with the get up man!" ugh.

I really think they should have just left well enough alone. It was fine the way it was.

All I remember about Akira was that I found it unwatchable when I first saw it and when I bought the newer dub, I was able to watch it.  But that doesn't really say anything about the dub itself because that could've been the years in between.  Time tends to do that with stuff.  I think the tin is gay.  I like stuff to fit neatly on shelves.  The tin is a pain in my ass everytime I resort through my stuff.

I never cared for Akira either, but then my opinion is probably coloured by the huge 1990's fanboy hoo-hah over the theatrical release.  We grizzled CFO veterans were mostly thinking, "Yes, very nice, but what about the OVA of  "yer favorite show here".  True, it was ground-breaking for anime, but part of the appeal was the esoteric pretense of understanding everything in it.  If Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust had been out at the same time, I don't know that we would still be marveling at the Akira effect.

I actually wish they had gone with a series instead of a movie for Akira. They left a shit load of stuff out to get it down to movie size. So in that way the movie was a let down, but it was still pretty damn good. Still want them to do Akira again as a series long anime.

Quite a skirmish back then between hardcore anime fans here who "read" manga (though I know some understood enough Japanese to do fan translations) and looked down on those who didn't fully "get" Akira because they didn't have the benefit of all the backstory and others who wanted more people to enjoy anime and not feel like it was some clique they could never get into because demand drives market and that would mean we could see a wider variety in a format other than 5th generation grainy fantape.  In the end, those of us in the latter camp won, but some of the people in the CFO with connections in Japan who didn't want to lose their influence were real dickheads about the whole thing.  What had started out here as a fun gathering for anime folk with the mecha fans sitting happily with the shojo fans rapidly degenerated into Mean Otakus.  :-\

Knowing that I'll never see any of those assclowns again, I'll have to try Akira once more with an open mind.   I saw it once, knew the story when I did, wondered then and still wonder now what inspired a near-Branch Davidian following around it.

I never saw the big attraction to Akira...I found it to be enormously overhyped, both in its art quality and its premise/storyline.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Akira is ok.

It was the first anime movie I ever saw so I thought it was awesome.  I've since seen better.

Yeah, it does have that overratedness about it.  Maybe it would've had a greater impact for me if I had seen it back when it was theatrically released, but I was an adult by the time I had seen it and had already seen tons of other anime by then that I could set the bar to.

It was one of those anime things where it was the only thing like it at the time so it was automatically considered awesome whether it was or not.  Wings of Honneamise was a far superior movie, and it's of similar vintage.

Well I guess I'm just odd. I've seen people talk about how great an anime is and I watch it only to think it is utter shit. Then an anime comes along that is "Overhyped" and I love it like it was my long lost child come home.

Eh...I still love it. That's all that matters.

The second vol. of Kyo Kara Maoh! kinda dragged.  I hope that's not a trend.  It's becoming trite and predictable.  At least where the hero of the story is concerned.

I kinda liked Akira, but not for the dub because I never watched the dub. I guess it was the mindless violence and exploding people. Mmm... exploding people.

I saw The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. It was a pretty good movie, kinda a more dramatic and tender and less violent version of The Butterfly Effect. Girl flies down hill on a bike, brakes fail and she gets hit by a train, then finds herself pushed back through time before the accident. Thus discovers she can travel through time. She tries to use it to get her way, like retaking tests and the like. Then she tries to use it to hook up a friend with a girl. Finally, well... I never really saw any chemistry between the two, but somehow she falls in love with someone and he leaves her, and for some bizzare reason she doesn't try to change it using time travel, or for fuck's sake, just telling him how she feels about him, and instead just cries like a baby when he's gone. He says he'll meet her in the future but that could be 300 years from then, and she'd be dead. I'll never understand Japanese females.

I'm starting to like Code Geass more and more I see it. I already mentioned it's about this guy, LeLouche (LuLu), who lives in Japan, and the British have taken over Japan and treat the population like Jews, and Lulu was the bastard son of the Emperor who's mother was assasinated by rival nobles, and his sister paralized in the attack, and now he hates the empire. And so he's so fucking smart he's taken over the rebellion under the code name Zero and is openly attacking the empire. And some wierd witch gave him Jedi Mind Trick Abilities.

What I love about this, besides the mecha action, is the fact that Lulu is almost evil himself. He's a tactical genius but he's also a madman. He has no problem killing anyone who gets in his way. In one attack he crushes the enemy troops with a landslide, but the landslide also buries most of the rebel troops as well. In another attack, he blows up a rebel ship to win a battle. This guy's motto seems to be "The end justifies the means" and his methods rank up there with the great military madmen of history. Lulu slowly becomes just as evil as the Empire he's fighting as the series progresses. Add to that that his best friend pilots the Empire's best mech, and believes in stopping Zero because he thinks the Empire can be changed within peacefully, and it gets very very interesting after a while.

Back when I had cable, I tried watching that several times and couldn't get into it, even when I would end up watching a whole episode.  I don't know if that's due to the quality of the show, the dub, or maybe the fact I'm just getting a little tired of anime.

Yeah, I've slowed down a lot, too.  I have a shelf of anime I haven't even watched yet, and the fact is that I really don't have the urge to watch it.  In fact, I don't watch a whole lot of television anymore.

Yeah, I stick mainly to what we get with Netflix.  And I get to write and draw a lot more these days without cable.

I got tired of the "Rinse and Repeaters" a long time ago. Now it has to be impressive to keep me watching...so I don't watch much anime anymore.

It pisses me off kinda.  If I can predict what happens, then I'm not interested.  I predicted part of one episode of Kyo Kara Maoh, so my interest dropped a bit.  I think a lot of people simply aren't trying anymore.

It's why I only stuck with DBZ for like the first arc, well that and they replaced all the voice actors. (I don't like change.) but I was watching it and I was like "Wait....so now they have to train cause a bad guy is coming to kill them? Didn't we just do that?" and it's pretty much that over and over and over again. A lot of Anime suffers from this. It seems to be a story template in Japan or something. I also like underdog stories better then the Hero being the best and just beating everyone from the start. I find that boring.

I should really stop starting a series when I really haven't even finished the last one...

but this is cute, funny, irrelevant, and has lesbian jokes.
