So doing a sort of anime-check in as the season winds down.

For the stuff I check out every week, thats...

Stuff I Really Enjoy
--------------------
Inept Villainess
Jaadugar
Clevatess II

Stuff I Like (But it just stumbles a tiny bit)
-------------------
Daemons of the Shadow Realm

Stuff I Didn't Think I'd Watch So Much Of
(But I Need to Watch Something While Eating Lunch)
-------------------
Victoria of Many Faces - It turned out okay enough and shorter than I thought it'd be.
All Works Maid - After the first few episodes, the focus shifts from Maid-y Sue to other characters. While Maid-y Sue is still the most important person in the story, having other perspectives from some of other characters really salvages this.
Frontier Lord - It was so weird; I had to watch more of it. Like a car wreck you can't turn away from. But I think I've dropped it now. It has an interesting take on beast-kin, I'll give it that.

As an aside, I was somewhat watching the one with Duke that Adores her or whatever but it's so dull. The male lead is somewhat interesting and the female lead is wholesome enough but it really needed some big plot to be happening in the background to give it that little something extra.

I also watched a few episodes of the Oblivious Saint one until it pissed me off. So the male lead has a sick brother. Male lead and his buddy ask the saint to help the sick brother. She does and the sick brother comes on to her! WTF. She doesn't invite this attention at all but just wants to help male lead and his buddy heal this guy. The male lead gets jealous and the buddy is, like, blaming the saint. And the sick brother is all smug about it. And the saint feels bad about all of this and sad that the male lead thinks she'd rather have his brother. DUUUDE. Fuck all of these men. They all go straight into the trash can.

When did FE become such a repository for anime wives? I feel like it's been that longer than it hasn't.

I liked it when it was on GBA. Gorgeous vintage sprites for me.

With Fire Emblem: Awakening. Then when Heroes came along and Nintendo was making huge mint from fans desperate to gacha-farm their waifus and husbandos in swimsuits and shit, there was no coming back.

I actually haven't played anything other than the three GBA games. I almost bought a Switch to play Three Houses but then the pandemic made that impossible. I'm kind of glad I didn't. Three Houses can be fun to watch but it looks tedious to play. Then there's Engage, which also looks fun to play but forces you to sit through its weird load times and cringe story with cutscenes so long it puts people's Switches to sleep. I think if I ever play that, it'll have to be on an emulator. Engage has some super-nice mods for it.

Holy shit. I uninstalled Google Chrome on my laptop and then it jumpscares me and is all, "Boo hoo, you uninstalled us? WHY?" FUCK. OFF. :goddammit:

4
I'm tempted to get a Switch 2 for the new Fire Emblem but, meh, will I really have time to play it if I did? Probably not.

I could just click that I'll decide later but it's the principle of the matter!  >:(

Hey, he got five extra years over Tim and Dolly.

Gotta say nothing is really exciting me for Fall either. Not even Apothecary Diaries.

Chrome has actually made itself unusable for my personal computer. It insists I either use it as my default browser or say that I'll decide later. I decided now, idjits. I don't want you as default. I'm just gonna junk Chrome.

10
Wait, is the bee paper real? Like someone actually selling it for that cost?

Shelly Fabares, Christine from "Coach", died on the 22nd.

I didn't think Tim was dead already but I thought he and Dolly were older than 80.

*** Ogre's Bride ***

This show takes place in some wacky world where demons choose human brides and all the human women are dying to marry a demon-dude because status or something. It's hilariously awful. Literally made for brainlets. Everything is just told to the viewer everything without allowing us to infer a single feeling. No matter what you see on screen, someone will proceed to explain it to the viewer and tell you how you should feel about it. That someone will likely be the main character.

If that weren't bad enough, she's not a reliable narrator. Because she's all "no one luuvvvvs me" repeatedly but, girl, you have two loving grandparents. This show does nothing with these two people but have them be consistently kind and supportive. A normal kid would run away from home and just stay with grandma and grandpa. The excuse of "she didn't want to trouble us so she never told us she was miserable" is lame. This girl also has at least one super-caring friend at school that was ready to wreak violence on the main character's shitty family. The main character also works a job and the boss seemed nice to her. This story needed this character to truly be alone for that dumb plotline to work.

But this show would never allow this girl to truly be alone because the main character is the specialist, specialist girl ever. The older ogre dude obsessed with her is of course super speshul, super handsome, super rich, and all the ladies want his demon-thang because he's bestest strongest demon to ever demon. Also, he's a violent, heartless, possessive stalker who wants to basically imprison this child and who quit her job for her behind her back. And the show's basically thinks all of this shit is the most romantic thing ever. WTF.

** Chainsmoker Cat **
I don't hate it but it's too gross that I can't love it. It's both good and also not something I want to continue watching.

I did find it weird that I came across comments on this show being "this is what depression looks like." Which, in some aspects, sure, I guess. Are all the gags included in that statement?

Also, why isn't she finishing these cigarettes? You don't smoke up to the filter but these seem a bit too long. Unless Japanese cigs have super-long filters or something. I dunno. Or maybe that's also part of the joke that she leaves them too long.

14
If it weren't for your posts, I wouldn't know Cartoon Cartoons was still a thing.

15
** Red River **
I forgot to post about this one when I saw it. It is pretty forgettable. Not terrible. Just kind of there...

Google did it again! This time they outright hid my renewal emails for my site. I know this is tinfoil territory but I think this shit's on purpose! I have multiple gmails for various purposes and my host was the only one blatantly targeted like this. >:( Fucking rancid.

17
** Isekai Foodie Anime **
Saw one ep of this. It seems okay. It doesn't seem to have much in the way of a plot though.

18
I know most people will like the Mari character from Goodbye Lara but I found her annoying. I hope she becomes more tolerable soon.

** Inept Villainess **
It's fine. Not wowed but I also read this story in the LN and manga. Presentation is decent so far.

19
** Victoria of Many Faces **
This first episode was okay. I could see people being bored by this though. I might watch a bit more to see if it interests me, especially since I dropped the book so early.

20
** Clevatess II **
I think the school parts are going to be a real challenge to get through. It's been awhile since I read the manga but it almost feels like a different, inferior show when at the school versus the rest of the episode.

21
For me, it wasn't so much nostalgia than the feeling that the story is being presented straight from a storybook. I think that feeling will fade once she's settled into modern Japan. Unless this is older Japan. But once a smartphone appears, the vibe is dead for me.

** Stepmother one **
I watched the Stepmother one on YouTube. It's there for free. I forget the full name of it but it's the one where the girl thinks the stepmom and daughters will be mean to her when they're just aggressively weird. It was all right. Feels a bit like the schtick might get old fast. Also, how is this a stepmom when I don't see the father around? I'm a bit confused about the dynamic. Is the father dead? Is he away for work?

22
I know the new Tanya the Evil hasn't started but, damn, I can't be the only one who more or less liked the anime when it came out but no longer gives a fuck, right? Granted, I recall starting to fall off from the later eps but damn, son; it's been nearly ten years. I guess you're expected to reacquaint with the anime or read the source material but screw that.

23
** Goodbye, Lara **
Good so far but the proof will be in the next few episodes since this was all setup.

24
The artist is the Lodoss War / Escaflowne dude: Nobuteru Yuki. Another side effect of watching that old video game YouTube channel I mentioned in the other thread is that the host will mention the artists by name and then I end up in an art rabbit hole.

25
It's not a recap but it spends a few minutes recapping before getting on with the story. It is new content.

** Witch in Mongolia **
I don't know if I can stick with this. It's good but it also managed to break my heart in two episodes. I don't know if I can survive that week after week.

** The Duke's Son Claims He Won't Love Me **
Kind of bored with this on the offset. I wish this anime had started in the middle of episode one because the "set-up" or whatever feels pointless. I fast forwarded and nothing of value was lost. As soon as I got midway, it started to get interesting and then it soon ended. I might watch another episode or two before making my mind.

26
** Oblivious Saint Anime **
lol, I forgot I watched this. That's because it's completely forgettable. To the point you wonder why they even bothered making this first episode.

I only remembered it because I watched that maid one where she has 'lapis lazuli' eyes and in the light novel version of this story, the evil sister has 'padparadscha' eyes, which are inherited from one of her parents (I forget which) and wins in over the top silliness. I didn't even know that was a word until trying to read that book.

I have a special distaste for media where you'll have two characters interact as if they've been taken over by robots and are trying to treat each other as human beings. This chick's learns for the first time her father loves her. They haven't been apart for years or anything. They've just, uh, never fucking talked to each other. B-But you don't understand: she's his treasure. He, uh, just never mentioned this before and let her feel hated this whole time.

And then you have the sister with the padparadscha 'Parappa the rapper' eyes being a bitch. Will she be a bitch again? Yes, yes she will. And our main character seems surprised by this behavior that this chick is always engaging in.

I don't even remember the character interaction being this fucking terrible. I dropped that book because it kept shifting the pov character and they all spoke with the same narrative voice. So while I agree it was badly written--just going by the translation--the way the characters interacted with one another was actually not one of the problems. Yet this adaptation seemed determined to make it one.

Thanks to the PC-98 rabbit hole I mentioned in the other thread...

28
Did anyone buy from the most recent Prime Day sale? It was ass. I had some stuff I was keeping tabs on before the sale occurred and it was all more expensive than ever.

I got 50% off Choolips for one of my cats (since he can't have other snacks), but those things get discounted a lot. I've seen them that cheap before.

29
The algorithm's super broken but every once in a while, something nice makes it through.

For some reason, this video appeared:

And I've been down the rabbit hole of that channel's videos on PC88 and PC98 video games. And to think I was just fumbling around with Oregon Trail while all this interesting stuff was appearing overseas. But I didn't even get a computer until a couple of months before I turned 18.

And while it's not a computer, it made me nostalgic for my old Brother Word Processor, which I wrote stories on all throughout my teens before getting my first computer. I'm pretty sure it got stolen over twenty years ago the last time were we burglarized. They probably thought they were stealing a computer when they took it.

** Daemons of the Shadow Realm **
Only posting about this one because the 2nd cour started off with a run-down of events. Can we not do this shit? Can we not cater to the brainlets who weren't paying attention to the fucking show? It's only been a week in between the prior cour. If a viewer's goldfish brain couldn't keep up, they've likely already dumped this show, looked up info/spoilers, or are watching while doomscrolling anyway.  This shit felt like a time-stealer and I hated it.
