Are you talking about YourMovieSucksDotOrg? That dude's been making shit for over a decade, and I only found out about him a couple months ago. He can come across a little unhinged sometimes, but he's also insightful and fucking hilarious.

Did you watch his exhaustive Kimba video? Holy shit.

I apologize for gibbering like an idiot if YMS isn't what you were talking about.

As to what you were actually saying, there always seems to be this kneejerk reaction to any criticism that could be labeled as "punching down".

"New Lion King sucks!" = Hate towards blacks.
"Lady Ghostbusters sucks!" = Hate towards women.

Like, a person is perfectly capable of thinking something is shitty without having ulterior motives.

I am actually and I did also see the Kimba vid.  I have to admit I did believe The Lion King was a Kimba ripoff so it was nice to be spoonfed so much information.

The funny thing is those were ruined by white guys.  Just like Star Wars.  Mostly guys, some gals.  The directors, producers, writers, and cinematographers are, like, ALL white dudes except for about three ladies.  But somewhere along the line, this fucky idea pervaded society where if something sucks then it's because the critic saying so is discriminating against whoever is the face of the film.  Which is so gross.  Or, in the case of Kathleen Kennedy, clearly the critics hate women.  No, babe, just you.

Speaking of St*r WarzzZZ, I've been watching Kenobi, and uh... I don't know, man. It's kind of all over the place. Like, Ewan McGregor is always great, but even he's having to do some heavy lifting here, and I'm not sure he can carry that weight all by himself.

So, it's six episodes, right? You'd think they'd be covering a lot of ground in a relatively short amount of time. Here's what's happened so far, in the broadest of strokes:

SPOILERS IF YOU GIVE A FUCK!!!

Ep1 - Li'l Leia is kidnapped oh noes!
Ep2 - Obi-Wan rescues Leia hurray!
Ep3 - Li'l Leia is kidnapped again oh noes x2!
Ep4 - Obi-Wan rescues Leia yippee!
Ep5 - ???
Ep6 - !!!

Now, it would be so perfect and hilarious if episodes 5 and 6 followed suit, MY GOD. Who plotted this shit? Fucking Jon Favreau?! (Just kidding he had nothing to do with it this time.)

Leia gets kidnapped again but before he can rescue her, it ends on a cliffhanger.  See you for Season Two!

Now, it would be so perfect and hilarious if episodes 5 and 6 followed suit, MY GOD. Who plotted this shit? Fucking Jon Favreau?! (Just kidding he had nothing to do with it this time.)

Wrong! The chick directing Obi-Wan also worked on the Mando-show with Jon Favreau.

"I don't think I could have done Kenobi if I hadn't done Mandalorian first. That was for a number of reasons – one, just coming in and really learning Star Wars under people like Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, and getting on a production level to understand how everything works. How do you do a Jawa? How did the creatures operate? That was tremendously helpful. And then the other big piece of it was StageCraft. This technology that obviously we started on The Mandalorian, we also used in Kenobi, so that was something I was incredibly excited to continue with."

"How did the creatures operate?" Do they actually still use creatures? It all looked like bad cg to me.  Well, not Baby Yoda.  That looked like someone playing with a Cabbage Patch kid doll.

I also looked up the writers for the show and two of them are really odd: Hannah Friedman and Jody Harold.  Look them up and be amazed.  They are literally bored rich people with nothing significant on their resumes before working on this show. This article really plays her up in particular. Right next to Andrew Stanton and his football field sized resume at Pixar.  The BRAINTRUST AT TEH PIXAR HURRRR.  But what did she write though?

So Obi-Wan sucked, shocking the world. I've seen some express the sentiment that it had a shaky start, but really stuck the landing, and I'm like what fucking show did you watch?

Anyway, on a more positive note, I finished watching The Boys S3 and that show continues to be a shining example of how to produce quality television, and just superhero shit in general. Imagine if Disney actually allowed Marvel to be interesting! That's The Boys.

Having never finished the first season I found that I have a hard time watching The Boys. The books were intense enough, and the show carries that forward. Plus I couldn't get used to Wee Hughie looking so different.

Understandable, though. Simon Pegg was already way, way too old. They did give him a pity role as Hughie's dad.

You know, I had no idea Jack Quaid (Hughie) was a Hollywood nepotism baby! He's legit, though. I'm not implying that he's talentless and undeserving.

I ended up on some random subreddit. I forget which one but it had to do with bad character development or something. And there were so many threads on The Boys due to the end of the third season that a mod banned the topic from the subreddit. I haven't seen The Boys or anything but I just thought that was funny.

As I understand it, there's a portion of the fanbase that (bewilderingly) believes that the main villain will eventually be vindicated and redeemed. I could see those people being upset over the events of the third season.

I'm sorry, but having read the book, that's...

BWAH-HA-HAH, HA!!!

There's only one more twisted motherlover in that story, and I can't say who as I don't know how far along the show is and wouldn't spoil it.

There's a "Persuasion" adaptation on Netflix that's, just, ew.  I was going to watch it because Persuasion is my favorite Austen story (okay, it's tied with Pride and Prejudice) but I heard really bad things about it so looked it up to verify.  It's like Netflix wanted another Bridgerton so they cribbed from Bridgerton with casting choices you'd find in that show and a general weird tone full of anachronistic fucking language. To make it more "accessible" to younger audiences.  How dare they.

   ==rant below==

So I admit I already was not onboard with the diverse casting.  But that's a bit unfair of me, I think.  Like, if everything else was good, maybe I wouldn't be bothered by it.

But to change the language to how people talk today; to have Anne talking and smizing to the fucking camera; to have the hair and makeup look modern as shit... I've seen regency Halloween costumes better than this.  I don't watch an Austen adaptation for this bullshit.

And I thought Keira Knightly's Pride and Prejudice was a pile of dung for having characters stand outside dramatically in the rain (a gentleman's daughter would never); or having a pig walk inside their house (the fuck would a landed gentleman have a dirty pig walking around inside of his home?); or having Lady Catherine--the daughter of an earl and the widow of a knight--go traipsing about in the dark of night like a crazy person.  Another Persuasion adaptation had the main character--Anne Elliot--running through the streets like an errand boy when she's a baronet's daughter.  (Yes, I was triggered.)  But this shit takes the cake.

If they wanted a modern adaptation, they should've just made one.  They could've made it like a "Bridget Jones' Diary" sorta deal.  (BJD is basically Pride and Prejudice.)  Or they could've placed it within the context of another culture like "Bride and Prejudice."  Reviews for that one were pretty mixed but Merla and I enjoyed it very much.

Bridgerton has a veneer of sleaze on it that doesn't belong in an Austen adaptation.  Austen stories are classics.  They don't need this "hello, fellow zoomers" bullshit.  The character of Anne Elliot in Persuasion is a lonely, unassuming, sensitive person with strong values and common sense who carries herself with a subdued sort of sad dignity.  She's not some snarky wine aunt rolling her eyes, making quips, and fucking smirking.  If that's what they wanted, they should've remade Pride and Prejudice instead of Persuasion.  I still would've bitched about it but at least the lead's personality wouldn't be a complete antithesis of the fucking character.  >:(

Were you exposed to Austen as part of your education, or was her stuff something you came to on your own? Because I'll admit I have zero familiarity with any of her work, and whenever I see them promoting the adaptation du jour it just looks like a stuffy period piece/sleep aid.

Call me a philistine!

I can't quite recall: I know I was exposed to Austen in a literature class I took around 2004 in community college. But I was also flipping through cable channels once around the same time and came across the ending to what was clearly a late 80's/early 90's movie or show.  I knew it was something Austen-related and thought it was Pride and Prejudice.  So I eventually watched P&P, the 90's series one with Colin Firth, and really liked it.  But that wasn't the one from cable I saw.

I later tracked down the show I saw as a mid-nineties adaptation of Persuasion starring Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root and it's among my favorite movies.  It's short and to the point.  The characters act and look like believable characters while still being total caricatures: the vain, snobby rich people; the snobbier rich people; the down-to-earth new money sailors; the woe-is-me emo who's into poetry; the hypochondriac sister; the smarmy cousin that's just after a buck. The costuming and make-up was purposefully subdued so the people look, dare I say, normal.  Even the lighting was purposefully subdued so it doesn't look like your regular, overly-polished Austen adaptation. There's multiple scenes where the characters converse or dance to candlelight.  They go out into the countryside and to the seashore, so it's not as if the entire movie is in some stuffy room.  I watch it when I need a cozy movie that's not a Ghibli movie.

To summarize it: it's about a Christmas cake an "old maid" named Anne Elliot who is the middle of three daughters to a widowed, vain, overly-pompous baronet. She wanted to marry for love but was persuaded not to because her husband-to-be Frederick Wentworth was a poor sailor. She deeply regrets this choice and becomes a wilted flower of a person who has no interest in marrying anyone else or even dancing. Around 8 years pass and Anne's stupid father has spent way too much of their money so they have to rent their family estate out to the rich Admiral Croft. Admiral Croft got rich from the naval prize money and so did his brother-in-law, who happens to be Captain Frederick Wentworth. And it's not so much "oh, now he's rich" but the fact that he's actually back in her life (through their social circle) and all of that regret from her youth is now slapping her in the face. But she knows she broke his heart and has no business saying anything further than a greeting to him. He, meanwhile, is looking for a wife and they end up together again by the end of the movie sailing the high seas in happiness.

But, yeah, I know Austen adaptations can be stuffy. I think the 90's Persuasion is on the lower end of the stuffy meter. It lets you know it's a period piece but doesn't wallow in the fact. I have tried watching other adaptations and I get bored when they're too stuffy. There's an 80's Pride and Prejudice series that's really stuffy but it has my favorite version of Mr. Darcy as played by David Rintoul. The 90's Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth is one I also find on the lower end of the stuffy meter but it's five episodes at around forty minutes a piece so if it's not your thing it will feel like a slog. I like Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson (even though a bunch of character ages are all wrong) but the circumstances of the characters just makes me angry. (The good characters mostly get financially shafted and the bad characters basically get all the money they wanted.)

I don't recall how stuffy the Kiera Knightly Price and Prejudice is because I hate that movie. Everybody and their mother loves it, it's their favorite, and they all go gaga over Matthew McFayden's Mr. Darcy when he literally looks wet and dirty in every other promo pic. (Everything looks wet and dirty in that movie to me.) Colin Firth and David Rintoul's Mr. Darcys look contemplative and reserved. McFayden's Mr. Darcy looks like he has no fucking soul. Thanks, I hate it.

I actually haven't completely sat through any version of Emma (other than Clueless), Northhanger Abbey, or Mansfield Park nor have I even read those. I found them a bit boring. I've come pretty close to getting through Emma.  I spaced out somewhat so I don't count that as me having watched the whole thing. But the other two outright put me to sleep. Maybe I'll try them again someday.

Not to piggyback on my own prior post but as an aside, when the Netflix version of Persuasion was announced, I recall hearing about another studio making their own Persuasion. When the Netflix one was released, I went to go look up the other version and couldn't find anything about it. I thought I misremembered.

Well, I just found a Youtube comment that mentioned something and verified it online: It turns out that other Persuasion was going to made by Fox. When they heard that Netflix was making Persuasion, Fox canceled their own Persuasion. What the fuck, Fox? Fucking studios. I hate when they do this shit. Imagine if Netflix cancelled C R I C K E T   T I T S Pinocchio because Disney was doing their own. No. NO NO NO. Don't do this bullshit where you think only one of something is needed at any one point in time. What utter bullshit. Hell, maybe the other Persuasion would've also been bad. But Netflix set a pretty low bar here.

Oh shit, Clueless is just a modernized Austen story? Had no idea. See, I wasn't lying when I said I know fuck all on the subject. And I probably shouldn't have said "stuffy", it's just the kneejerk descriptor I apply to any stories taking place in that setting. A bit of prejudice on my part, if you will.

No!

Seriously, though, what's your take on Dakota Johnson? Is she a legitimate talent, or is she skating by on the nepotism afforded her by Daddy Don? I've really only seen her in Bad Times at the El Royale, and she was good in that.

Uh, that I'm a fan of her mom?  Ha ha.

Quote

I mean, that's any Hollywood baby. Daddy Don, Mother Melanie, Step-daddy of 19 years was Antonio Banderas, Grandma Tippi Hendren. Her maternal grandfather was an child actor on Broadway and an advertising executive. Dakota's first role was with her half-sister in one of her mom's films playing her mom's daughter. (In a movie directed by Antonio Banderas.) I'm sure the role presented quite a challenge for a new actor.  ::)

Honestly, I don't have a fair read on any talent she may or may not have. She doesn't pick roles in anything I want to watch. She had a scene I saw a clip of from one of the Fifty Shades where she does a sort of homage to a famous scene her mother had in Working Girl. And watching that made my skin itch. I don't like her vibe. I read her as a snob and she comes off that way to me through the screen. Even in the clips I saw of Persuasion, I didn't even see her as Anne Elliot. I just saw Dakota Johnson horsing around being stupid. She joins Lily Collins and Emma Roberts in the "snooty rich kid larping" bucket.

What We Do in the Shadows has been fucking WACK this season. I'm not actually going to look into why that may be, because wild speculation is way more fun.

Did they get new writers? Is it the same writers and they've just run out of ideas? Have they been taking too many suggestions from the cast?

Whatever, it's butt. Like, almost a parody of itself. It's become an absolute cartoon.

For me, the comedy always came from the fact that these immortal vampires are leading the most mundane, petty existences. Now they're constantly engaged in the most outrageous shit, and there's not even the pretense that they're trying to keep things low key to avoid unwanted attention.

Then again, maybe the show hasn't changed at all, and I'm just tired of it.

I watched the movie some time ago and I guess the comedy or whatever just sailed over my head because I didn't find it remotely entertaining. I know the series is a different animal but the movie put it off of all of it.

Nah, it's basically the same. First season is a total rehash of all the best moments from the movie, with various additional elements. Characters are different, sure, but they go through all the same motions. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing... well, if you didn't enjoy the movie then I suppose it definitely is.

I feel like every sitcom eventually hits this point, where plots become increasingly outlandish until it's not even about the personalities anymore, it's just whatever wacky hijinks they're being slotted into.

Trying to think of a really good example. Maybe the last few seasons of Malcolm in the Middle? That shit was a funhouse mirror reflection of itself by the end. Reese sealing himself in a crate and shipping himself overseas, shit like that.

I watched the first ep of AMC's Pantheon (because it's free on YouTube) and I don't know what to think of it. It's not the best-looking show, especially when it comes to what's going around around the characters. It did do a good job at the beginning of getting me interested in Maddie and Caspian. There was something interesting in the narrative somewhere.  But by the end, my interest was dead.

I'm not being very fair to the Indian guy and I know everything's connected to the story, but a THIRD pov?  Or, I guess, a fourth since we're being shown characters and a location the first two characters have little/no knowledge on?  Or is that fifth as we needed to see the Mom character not-dump her rebound guy?  Why do shows do this bullshit?  This is LOST all over again with the pseudo intrigue of too many characters and trying to clumsily pile on sixty questions at once. Pick one or two pov and just tell the fucking story already. I'm getting Young Justice vibes all over again where things are supposed to be given significance or importance that's never narratively deserved. Oooooh, your giant server's in the mountains?  WHO THE FUCK CARES?

The story should've let the viewer get to know the Dad a little more. And it should never have Caspian skateboard home ever again. That sequence was horrible and really shows the shortcomings of the animation in full view. If you can't afford a cool skateboarding sequence, don't attempt to put one in. They could've just cut the sequence from where he skates across the crosswalk and then had him appear home.

There's some clips of this show online.  On one hand, why the hell are you trying to sell this show with (albeit fake) domestic violence?

And why did they make a serious sort of scene and then do the freakin' jokey ha-ha tone-killing comments at the end?  "You're my dead husband and I can't be your wife."  "lol, amirite"  "u rite, lol."  What the fuck.

The VR shit looks interesting but why wasn't that cool shit in the first episode.

From what I see online, it seems to be getting positive comments. But it also doesn't appear that enough people are watching it either.

Yeah, this is the first I've heard of it. Apparently it's on Prime in Canada, so at least I don't have to jump through any hoops to get to it.

Andor is bewilderingly good. Like, it's an actual fucking TV show. They finally found someone competent to do a St*r WarzzZZ treatment. Who would have thought that if you take the material seriously, your audience will in turn take your work seriously?!

Really makes me wish we had gotten the original vision for Rogue One before the execs decided to Disney it up.

Guess it's about time to cash in my free week of Disney+ on the Roku
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I thought that was in reverse: didn't the people making Rogue One expect Disney to "Disney it up" but got away with actually killing the rebels?

Hold off on that, it's a weekly series of 12 episodes currently on episode 4, so you'll want to wait. Also, still plenty of time to go downhill, but I'm hopeful.

Maybe I'm just misinformed. I seem to remember the director talking it up, saying it would be a "true war film" along the lines of something like Saving Private Ryan, I suppose? But then Disney fucked it all around and added a bunch of MCU-esque "humor" to lighten things up.

And that scene at the end where Vader shows up and mows down everybody, and the way it's framed and the music and everything makes it feel like he's the hero all of sudden? Just tonally fucking bizarre shit that I can't imagine was in the original script.

I'm so sick of Darth Vader. I never, ever thought I'd say that in my life but he needs to be sent to the farm to live out the rest of his years. And by "live out the rest of his years," I mean he needs to go get shot to death on the farm. And by "the farm," I mean "a dark alley way where no one can hear his screams." And by "his screams," I mean "his sigh of relief that at least he didn't have to go die at that torture farm."
