In theaters? Hobbit for the second time, this time in HFR 48fps 3D.
On video? Bolt.
Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph are arguably better than most of Pixar's recent output.
Haven't seen Wreck-It Ralph but I prefered Tangled and Bolt to anything they've put out since Wall-E.
Bolt was a Disney-only production.
Before leaving the house I saw that Bolt was playing on TV and only watched a little of the beginning. Later I went to rent Brave from redbox and found that I couldn't find it available, so I rented Bolt from Blockbuster, which amazingly still had my account info years after I last frequented the place.
I actually enjoyed Bolt a lot. It was a rather cute movie. My only beef was with how they actually convinced the dog that he was in a superhero world. There's no way any of those highways or streets at the beginning were real, more likely sets or CG, and there would be points where they'd have to switch sets, or stop filming and change something, and the dog would notice something was up. What, every time they change sets for a new location they drag the dog into the trailer and he's like "Hey, there's badguys out there still alive, why are we in this trailer?!" And then when he pops out of the trailer everything's changed? For instance they're at an airport. He does his bark. Goes into the trailer. Isn't the dog wondering why they're not catching the flight the girl said she would catch? All of it seemed too improbable to create this fake universe around this dog, and Truman did it far better. But it's a nitpick about only the first 10 minutes of the movie so whatever. It was made up with the rest of the movie.
Oh yea, and another complaint was that the pigeons didn't get enough screen time. They only pop up for about 5-10 minutes.
The Hobbit!!!Saw it twice. I agree that it feels dragged out a bit. I'm not exactly sure how they can make this into 3 movies. Two, maybe.
The idea they're going with is putting some of the extra material that Tolkien wrote, like the stuff at the end of Return of the King book. I actually recognized the sub-plot of the movie about the necromancer at the fortress in Mirkwood (who is actually Sauron trying to regain his strength... whoops spoilers!). However I spent the first time seeing the movie nit-picking about whether or not certain things were actually a part of Tolkien's actual writings or shit that Jackson just made up. For instance, with Azog the white orc, who never appeared in the Hobbit (his son lead the orcs in the battle of 5 armies) but is a major character in the movie. Also, the fat goblin king was off putting, he seemed way too comical rather than dangerous. However, this kinda goes along with the theme of the Hobbit that many of the villains (like the mountain trolls) are silly rather than dangerous.
A friend of mine complained about something I also noticed...that Gandalf saves the day way too much. Which seems to go against the books, where Bilbo saves the day EVERY Time.. from the trolls, the spiders, the wood elves, even at the end of the book he saves Thorin from himself.
Also, where the hell is Kili's beard?! He looks more like a tween idol than a dwarf.
But all of that is nitpicking about the movies compared to the books. I enjoyed it quite a bit despite feeling the movie dragged on quite a bit. I think Thorin's character is the best in this movie and I'd follow his beard to the ends of Middle Earth. Also, I accurately predicted where the first movie would end... I knew the best place was after the Eagles picked them up, and then dropped them on the rock pillar, right before they meet Beorn. And I was right. I'm not sure where they'll end the second movie... I assume after they slay Smaug. Won't give them a lot of material for the third movie though, although I think they'll also have the wizards driving Sauron out of Mirkwood in the third movie.
And the 48fps wasn't as bad as people were saying it was. Some of the action scenes were a bit blurry, like the Elves attacking the orcs.
