Saw First Class yesterday and thought it fucking blew.

I was quite impressed how 1st Class was actually enjoyable and wasn't the festering pile of mutant excrement I fully expected it to be.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I don't find that sentiment too encouraging.

A while back I saw both PotC 3 and then 4.

Watched 3 on tv when I was feeling out of it and couldn't pry myself out of my bed to change the channel. Actually only watched the second half of it. But it reminded me why I hated that movie.
1) Everyone keeps changing sides. There's no way to tell who's working for who and it seems that everyone's out for themselves. That may be accurate for real buccaneers, who really were looking out for themselves (as opposed to pirates that worked for hire). But I thought Hollywood dumbed down their movies, not made them unnecessarily confusing.
2) Two giant fleets of ships at the end and only two of them duke it out? Here I had expected an epic battle of massive proportions which might have saved the movie and it ends up two ships sailing around a sink drain while the other ships sip tea and are like "we'll just let them fight and then claim credit afterwards." I mean, the other pirate lords were cheering at the end like they actually DID shit.
3) And other shit.

POTC 4 was only mildly more entertaining. No massive ship battles had me disappoint, but I had the sense this was supposed to be a "treasure hunt" type of movie. I hate to say this but the first two may have been more entertaining than this one.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

And more movies:

Thor
It was........*twists mustache* smashing.

Dark City
Possibly one of the greatest movies I have ever seen in a long time.

Basic Plot: In a film-noir city, a guy wakes up in a hotel bathtub with a dead hooker behind the bed, and he can't remember shit. He has to find out who he is while avoiding a gumshoe, white vampire-like guys in black suits with strange powers, and a constantly-changing city that falls asleep for a while at midnight.

One of the best performances in this movie was by Jack Bauer Keifer Sutherland, playing a mad scientist of sorts. Keifer's character was just downright creepy. And he had you guessing his true motives until the end.

The other thing I loved about the movie was the atmosphere. The special effects weren't the best, this being a small-studio production, but this is trivial. What they did with what they could work with was astounding. The '40s Noir atmosphere was spot on with a perpetually shadowy city, and the buildings changing during "tuning" was cool.

Some mild complaints of the movie would be the fact that with the clues provided I had a pretty good idea what was going on before it's revealed. Plus, the ending turned into a bit of an matrix-like action sequence, although I still was entertained and rooting for the good guy.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

I will let you know, because if I like it then I'm going to pay for it the next day to watch it with some buddies. If not, then I won't.

Keep in mind that I'm a bit of a GL fan.

That can only serve to make you more reactive to its potential shittiness.

And apparently shittiness is not a word, or possibly Firefox's spell chell simply doesn't think so.

Or in being a a big GL fan he'll make excuses for it shittiness and deny that it was actually shit because he wants so badly for it to be good. I know I made excuses for The Phantom Menace for like a month after I saw it, but the feelings of disappointment in my soul were just too large and broke loose and I had to admit that it was a huge pile of steaming shit.

Ugh. Man, you're right. I'll never understand that school of thought, because I'm the exact opposite. If I really want to like something and it lets me down, I fucking reject it outright.

It's like if I buy a game for $60 and it sucks, I'll be pissed. But then there are people who will convince themselves the game isn't that bad... because they paid $60 for it.

I only ever did it for The Phantom Menace. Any other movie that I would have wanted to be good so bad has either been that good (Iron Man, Thor) or I knew ahead of time was going to be crap (G.I.Joe, Transformers) But TPM was in my days before the net. Now I am proud of myself  that I haven't gone the very sad route of hating all SW, just because the PT sucked. How someone can now hate the movie they grew up on and loved just because the Prequels fell short is beyond me. I don't hate The Exorcist, because all it's sequels (and prequels) sucked...same goes for Jaws.

Never done the game thing. I usually don't buy a game till it's 20-30 bucks. Only paid full price for two games in my life: Halo 3 and Halo: Reach. And I liked both of those.

If I buy a game for $60 and it sucks, I go sell it as soon as I beat the 'story' or whatever, if it's even good enough for that.

I will be honest about what I don't like and do.

I'm a big TF fan, and I still recommended people see the first movie just because it was the Transformers and, while not a good movie, was worth seeing. I still say that. But the second one was a festering leprous sore on the ass of modern cinema, and I proclaimed it such...but only after paying to see it, which remains one of my biggest regrets.

I thought the first one was actually pretty good. There were things I liked about the second ... but fucking a, that was a poorly made film.

I'm curious what the third will be like. Firing Megan Fox will not be enough to alleviate the problems, I am sure.

I'll never forgive TF for the huge glut of useless crappy humans that had no business being in a movie that should've been primarily about sentient robots.  Also, "what's crackin', lil bitches".  No, son.  No.   :nono:

Phantom Menace I actually didn't think was too terrible when I first saw it.  I think in part I because I just thought of it as "okay, this is kinda odd but it's building into something great, you'll see" and then the great part never happened.  EVER.

Bring good news about GL, Fifi.  I don't want it to suck.

You know looking back it is the most like the OT, in pacing and story. It got messed up in other places. Course I knew there was no hope after Attack of the Clones when he CGIed armor on Clone Troopers. Still hired the guys for the motion capture, but put CGI armor on them. It was pretty clear then he wasn't using the tech as a way to tell the story he always wanted to tell, but instead just had a huge hard on for CGI.

Re GL: I'll never get it when movies deprive us of the villain we want to see on the big screen.  Sinestro, bitches.  Don't set up everything to be a goddamn trilogy.  Nobody's that interested in GL to sit there for three movies.  Same with Wonder Woman.  Give her one awesome fucking movie and then let's get both of their asses in the goddamn Justice League asap.  Shit ain't that damn complicated.

So I saw Green Lantern and I can say that it was okay, I'd even pay to watch it again.

The screening was actually in 3D, which worried me but not for long. This had some of the best 3D effects I've seen in a movie. I think Hollywood is starting to reach a smart point with the 3D effects. Subtle effects work even better than extreme in your face ones, and this movie did a good job of a mix of both.

Now, enough about the effects. The story was somewhat mediocre at best, but worked for what it was. It didn't try to be more than just another comic book movie, so I think they were able to set the tone well for the mixed target audience they have. The main villain, Parallax and his little buddy Hector Hammond definitely differed from their comic storyline (which didn't really relate to each other), but in a way that didn't feel inexcusably forced. Most of the Green Lantern designs that I originally hated looked much better in motion, such as Kilowog. Sinestro was a strong point of the film and a bonus scene during the credits show his path will go down the one you expect it to if you know anything of the Green Lantern mythos (a scene which I proclaimed was in ways better than the entire film). A couple of plot points hinged on things that didn't really make sense to me (Hal asks the Guardians for help to save the humans, and then asks permission to defend Earth on his own, which is something he shouldn't have to do as it lies in the sector he is supposed to be defending) and some others that are a bit more of a spoiler to discuss. Many of the characters were written well, and matched their comic personalities. Hector Hammond (who again, should have nothing to do with Parallax or the 'yellow powet of fear') was better characterized than I expected, his extreme jealousy showing even while possessed.

Sadly, the two disappointing characters were in the main cast: Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris. Hal started the film as cocky as he should be, but then his required daddy dying flashback and pretty much pusses out for most of the film, occasionally showing how courageous he is, but mostly being a big fat wuss who cries about how the ring shouldn't have chosen him. He had done this at some point during the comics, but he wasn't such a fucking baby about it. I think they took some inspiration from a Kyle Rayner storyline for that, which is also dumb because fuck that. Carol was closer to right, I think. She gets pissed off at Hal when he does something dumb, but when she finds out he turned into a glowing space cop and saved the world, it was if he never did a stupid, inconsiderate, asshole thing to her before. Granted, the biggest thing they referenced was him forgetting her birthday, which really isn't that fucking bad, but whatever. His biggest fuckup actually happens in the movie (along with the aforementioned pussyfying flashback, but it works out fine and that being a fuckup pretty much doesn't matter.

Again, I would pay to watch it again, even with 3D surcharges. Ryan Reynolds did better than I though he would as Hal, and I still think Nathan Fillion would have made more sense, and had more of the voice that I hear in my head for Hal, but I can live with. Hopefully they'll get his characterization right in the next film if one comes (I fully expect it). All the aliens were well done with some unimportant exceptions of characters that they did things that I was disappointed with (re: killing them, but someone has to die for there to be a real threat, right?).

I'll give it a 6.9/10.

Of the comic book movies I've seen so far this year, I'd rate them so:

Thor 9/10
X-Men: First Class 7/10

All the aliens were well done with some unimportant exceptions of characters that they did things that I was disappointed with (re: killing them, but someone has to die for there to be a real threat, right?).

I'll give it a 6.9/10.

Of the comic book movies I've seen so far this year, I'd rate them so:

Thor 9/10
X-Men: First Class 7/10

I rate this review helpful.
