How much of that reaction do you think might just be bias against the D&D name?

Also, in the Mario movie, tell me there's not an a-ha song in it like I heard. Why do these movies do this shit? You have an entire catalog of bopping tracks to use and remix and you dig out fucking Bonnie Tyler. Fuck off. Eat shit. Argh, I'm so triggered.

Preconceptions about D&D? Definitely. I mean, I fully expected it to suck. Also, I'd be interested to know what actual tabletop gamers think about it. Maybe they've got a bug up their collective ass over it? You know how some fandoms react when their "precious" is appropriated for mainstream use, and it's all, "We were here first!" and the like. Although it kind of feels like D&D has been "cool" for a minute or two already, so... I don't know.

Mario movie is loaded with "tried-and-true" pop songs. It's nauseating.

The weird thing is that's directed by the Teen Titans Go! guys... but it's just the most paint-by-numbers, inoffensive fluff imaginable. I really wonder if Nintendo put the brakes on anything that could have been considered too "out there". Purely speculation on my part, but the film plays it so straight and safe, it's baffling considering the dudes at the helm.

Mario movie was just kinda meh. Kid wanted to see it so it was that instead of D&D. It seemed like a lot was cut from the Mario movie. Like what was peaches back story? Oh well…why the hell was Luigi even there? Oh well. Just so much that could have been explored but wasn’t.

And I couldn’t make it all the way through Black Adam…just couldn’t

Donkey Kong and everything Donkey Kong-related shouldn't have even been in the movie. You're right that Luigi was barely in it, they shouldn't have been separated at the beginning, and the story should have focused on... you guessed it: The Super Mario BROTHERS.

It made a killing this weekend too, sadly reinforcing the notion that it's actually worth a fuck. No justice.

I knew it was going to. That was the most full of theater had been since Covid. So I knew this move is going to make a ton of money.

I don't think Mario stuff has a high bar. All it had to do was not be the 1993 movie. Just look pretty and shiny and have the most basic Dry Bones skeleton of a story possible.

I rewatched Mario '93 tonight, because I've seen some people saying that the new one retroactively makes the old one a masterpiece by comparison, but it's still awful, just in different ways.

It's so inexplicably bizarre.

I'll always remember the theater cutting off the credits when I went to go see that movie and it still bothers me 30 years later. I've always been very OCD or whatever about watching the movie credits in the theater. Not because I actually care about reading them that much. It just doesn't feel like I've completely watched the movie if I don't. I guess the exception would be movies I didn't like or hated. Like, surely, I didn't stay until the end of the credits for that Mummy IV or whatever movie with Jet Li. Holy fuck, what a miserable experience. Or Journey to the Center of the Earth with Brenden Fraser. Merla made me watch both of those. Because Brenden Fraser.

There's a post-credits scene in that one, too! But would you have even known that then?

Not that it's anything noteworthy.

When post-credits scenes were becoming more and more popular, it started irritating me because I liked having the theater be relatively empty when I'd watch the credits. I mean, now I don't go to the movies at all so problem solved, I guess.

I was contemplating going to see Suzume, but apparently its screening was very limited in my area, so I missed out.

Guardians 3 was pretty good. I felt real human emotion stir within my cold, dead heart at several points throughout the movie. If nothing else, it serves as a great sendoff for the MCU.

Because I don't know that any of the stuff on the horizon is going to be worth a whole hell of a lot.

I tried watching Nimona but the humor kinda physically hurts me to sit through. Not even so much Nimona herself but, like, the other characters including extras and such. I would've preferred if everyone else was played straight (for the most part, heh) except for Nimona. The Puss in Boots super-dilated eyes a bunch of the characters have going on was off-putting. The music choices were a little... I don't want to say "terrible" because that's not the right word. I don't know if the song choices always fit. But that's fine. I guess this is like a 4/5 if I mentally delete all of the bad jokes.

I liked Nimona overall, but I had issues with it as well. The animation was nice, like when the characters are moving and emoting, it all looks really good. But the backgrounds/environments are all very flat/sterile. And I guess you could argue that's just the society they live in, but to me everything could have used another pass or two of added detail work. Same goes for secondary/tertiary character designs, very bland.

And the music you mentioned, I know it's nothing new to use pop songs from our real world culture in these imagined settings, but there was just something really jarring about it here. Maybe it was because despite going for the whole medieval/futuristic thing, everyone just speaks/behaves like they're from modern-day Earth? And they're playing what is clearly Monopoly, everyone's on social media, etc. Kind of all over the place, yeah?

I'm curious to read the comic book, because the artwork is VERY different.

Indy five wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. That’s not to say it was good. It was still a fucking train wreck. Ironically, there is a train wreck in the movie.

That new Transformers movie with the beasts is just kind of a wet fart. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being profitable, or if it's even already profitable, because this movie looks CHEAP. This is the cheapest-looking one of these they've done so far by a long shot, and if they can keep costs down, good on them, I guess. But man, what a pile.

And the dialogue? OOF. I swear to Christ, some of the shit that comes out of Optimus Prime sounds like it was generated by a Peter Cullen chatbot. No exaggeration. Just some of the most unnatural line reads you'll ever hear.

I watched The Sea Beast. There was some good here. Background and water was pretty. I liked early action sequence on the ship, some of the character designs, and the design of the green sea monster. The movie felt so bloated though that I lost interest. 90 minutes max. 90 minutes max for a kid's movie. Why the fuck are you nearly two hours long? Get on with the goddamn thing already. The two main creatures had the laziest-ass designs ever. It was disappointing to so much as look at them. The motive behind the monster hunting and making shit up made no sense. The reviews overall praise this movie and it's getting a sequel. I guess worse things get sequels these days. Much worse things. Oh and I watched it with Japanese language inadvertently and didn't bother to change the language to English because at least the Japanese voices had next to no chance of making me cringe.

Watched the Flash tonight. It was much better than I anticipated...I especially liked that it was inspired by Flashpoint Paradox but not a beat-for-beat adaptation. I also liked the timeline explanation (though why Bruce Wayne knew that defies rationale) and that they were all in divergent timelines reflecting past versions of characters.

Spoilers follow:

On that note, I nearly cried out when I saw George Reeves and then Christopher Reeve and Helen Slater together on screen for the first time. I enjoyed how they addressed the alternate Batman actor conundrum.

On the other hand, they really could have mined continuity for more. They can have the unfilmed Nic Cage Superman, but not Henry Cavill...that just makes no sense side from the real-world reasoning. No Lynda Carter, no Brandon Routh, Tom Welling? They really could have swung for the fences here, but the fact that they had a nondescript Jay Garrick but not John Wesley Shipp or Grant Gustin just baffles the hell out of me. But then again...Reeve and Slater. Together.

Man, the CGI looked like absolute dogshit throughout this movie. For such a high dollar movie, there was really no excuse for it.

This movie also drive home the fact that I really hate the lame-ass characterization of Barry in the Snyder movies. I was thinking, great, having met younger Barry older Barry will realize how idiotic he acts and will mature accordingly! But, no, we get back to the regular (well, almost) timeline, and he's just as ridiculous as before.

The end credit scene was meaningless as far as I can tell, other than half-assedly setting up for Aquaman 2.

Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I didn't understand the Aquaman scene at all. Was that meant to be the Aquaman we already know? Or was it a new divergent timeline Aquaman that doesn't know that he's Aquaman yet? Because it seemed like that's what Barry was trying and failing to explain to him.

And what does that mean for Aquaman 2? Anything? Nothing?

I watched Asteroid City. It was fine. Wes Anderson's recent efforts just haven't been hitting with me. I feel like his older stuff was more fun, and funnier. I might have laughed once during Asteroid City. That's not to say it's humorless, but the comedy is so subdued now. Used to be a perfect blend of artfulness and jokes. Now he's chasing the artsy-fartsy stuff a little too hard. For my liking, anyway.

Maybe I've become a fucking philistine.

I watched the Venture Bros movie tonight that was supposed to basically end the series, and it's exactly the same as the past few seasons of the show. In short, the movie runs in place and never goes anywhere, and it's simply not funny at all. And that's what this show has done for a long time: dance around practically every setup they'd ever created, feed a little info to deepen the underlying mystery, and do its best not to pay off anything to any satisfaction. It genuinely peaked with the second season, and it's been downhill ever since (the movie would have effectively been season 8).

I'm frankly glad it's over. It is over, isn't it? You wouldn't really know by this movie.

Margot Robbie was great, but I feel like Ryan Gosling stole the show. His Ken is so messed up and pathetic, it's hilarious.

It was just fun all around. I laughed a lot. And I suppose it has a message as well, but I feel like it's not really my place to say whether it lands or not.
