I should finish Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood tonight. By a long shot, this has been far, fast better than the first anime series in all departments. This means I can finish Sora no Otoshimono's first season and start Code Geass R2 next.

It is better because it more closely follows the manga (at least that is what I hear).

Another interesting fact, at a con earlier this year I attended a panel with Dai Sato and he basically said that the animation funding is only going to shows that basically copy manga, and that few companies are putting forth money for original content or even for shows that tell a different story than the manga.

It is an interesting parallel to Hollywood here.

Although I always mourn the ability for artists to create something new in their medium, I'd rather have the folks here follow the books/comics and shit more.  Given the manga industry over there, I could see why they would want to do it that way.

So chell this out: http://www.crunchyroll.com/search?q=panty+and+stocking

Thanks.  I heard about crunchyroll streaming P&Sw/G but I always hesitate making yet another account somewhere.  Especially since a little searching will get it to me without doing so.

But look at the quality of the video!

And i get what you are saying about following the manga, I agree with that. Especially in the case of FMA where it started off similar and then went on its own path when the had no more manga to copy.

I would like to see a better mix of original content, though. I like OC.

So do I but I don't think original content's going to make a comeback anytime soon.

What I get from YouTube, etc. is fine for my needs.  Higher quality would probably just stream like a bitch.

As recently mentioned earlier, I've been watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on Hulu.

However, I don't know the last time I've seen a truly great anime series, so permit me to do the sideways pointy gesture towards FMA:B. I'd go so far as to rank this among the top anime TV series ever. It has everything you want in an anime: beautiful visuals, tremendous world design, awesome characterization, and a far-reaching storyline that glues you to the screen as you stay up way too late to catch a little more of it.

While it was a good experience overall, I wasn't the greatest fan of the original anime, with its meandering first half (the part based on the manga), interesting second half that left you hanging, and follow-up movie that just plain sucked. FMA:B condenses that first half of its predecessor, proceeds down the path of the manga it's based on, and becomes a completely different and marvelous show that includes far more characters and situations that all come together nicely by the end. And it has an ending that takes, oh, about a dozen episodes to fully develop...it could have been a problem had it been simply drug out, but it was so satisfying to see every loose thread tied and every character done proper justice.

When the full anime box set comes out, this is BOUGHT to rewatch (I still prefer dubs, so I'd like to hear it in English...I hold Funimation's existing localization efforts in high regard) and preserve for posterity. Manga-ka Hiromu Arakawa is a mother-loving genius, and hats off to Studio Bones for a top-notch effort. If more anime were this good, the industry wouldn't be going to hell in a handbasket.

This is not a bad thing, if you ask me. This way, only shows based on successful books will be greenlit, which means the manga medium (which I generally don't read) will serve as a filter for anime in the future. This should result in better shows, if not visually (like GTO, a great series that got middling artistic quality in the anime).

I agree with the Hollywood connection only in that they're looking for known, successful quantities and not just comic books. I don't know if that's what you meant or not, so I thought I'd make the delineation.

I would prefer original stuff to adaptations.

The reason being, it's not like they're still sitting on this treasure trove of long-running manga that have never been developed into anime.

No, now what happens is as soon as any new manga becomes popular, the studios are all over it. They take series that barely have enough content to produce a half-season, mine it for all it's worth, then dump it and move on to the next hot property.

Then you end up with shows that have no real ending, or shows that go on way longer than they should because they're being artificially extended with filler.

The original FMA is a perfect example.

Then again, I am pretty excited that they're going back and picking up Berserk where they left off. But of course, that manga is also still running, so they're going to run into the exact same problem.

I did not like the FMA:Brotherhood dub.  Even though I liked the first FMA anime, I DID first watch that one dubbed and this one subbed.  Either I caught an off episode or it just didn't sound right.

Judging by one episode, and possibly an early one, at that, isn't a good indicator. The only thing that changed in terms of casting from the last one was Al, since the kid who played the role originally, well, grew up. Though he will play young Hohenheim later in the series, which is a neat touch.

I would prefer original stuff to adaptations.

This would only be a problem if you're not only reading lots of manga but are heavily involved in them. Otherwise, point of origin is irrelevant. I don't, so it makes no difference.

The way I'm reading this ties into the trend towards more faithful adaptation...again, like Hollywood (correlating increase in quality comic book movies with their close ties with existing characterization and portrayal). If it results in fewer half-way manga rip-offs (remember the clusterfuck that was Hellsing?) and more coherent, quality stuff, so be it. Otherwise, what's really the difference?

Sure, I could be wrong. But, thinking back to the assertion by Dai whoever, there's absolutely no way they could fulfill the demand for new programming with just what's seen previous print publication. There will be original programming, but it will be more in tune with what's proving successful in print already, not in terms of adapting pre-existing properties, but coming up with more based on proven successful ones. And it's not like cookie-cutter stuff hasn't always been a problem in any medium, so after thinking about it since my last post, I don't see how this is anything new.

I don't see why not.  How long does something get to torture me before I shut it off?   And it wasn't an early ep, either, it was where Lin and Ed are inside of Envy.
