THis isn't really an ANIME but it's foreign so I'll go with it.

Monday's at the LGS have been turning into Painting Days with Bad Foreign Movies.Saw The Guardian which was a korean flick with Nathan....someone. Former Australian Wrassler. He was a minor bad guy in it.

Apparently this group steals this guys two elephants and he goes on a kung fu spree. They kill one of'em and make it a skeleton statue. So the guy takes the leg bones and beats people up, and then cuts their tendons up. Whatever. Had the best fight sequence ever. A 15 No Cut stretch of this guy fighting up a spiral staircase. Other than that it was horrible. Though the fight scene where he just friggin' BREAKS like 50 people's bones is pretty sweet.

Then saw one called...The Host? I think. An Attempt at a Korean Monster Flick. Cept the monster looked like a cross between a Lungfish and a friggin' frog with teeth. The most fucked up part of that movie was when the thing stands over this pit and just throws up a BUSLOAD of human bones. Like, seriously. A BUSLOAD of freaking bones, like this thing had been eating people all movie and finally goes bulemic. Ew.

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

Currently downloading the Macross Frontier series, to see if it's worth a crap.  I'm betting it is.

I burned it onto a DVD to watch on the home theater. After the first one and its five eps, I'm chomping at the bit to get my desktop set back up (a water leak made me have to disassemble and remove it, and the carpet's about dry) so I can put the rest to the test.

I'm working on burning the Eva 1.0 movie to disk.  It's been a pain but I've got it figured out now.  Looking forward to that.

I got this done, but the subtitles are pretty high in the picture.  Otherwise, this movie was a colossal waste of time.  It's just a straight rehash of the first few episodes.  2.0 is supposed to begin to diverge from the original series, but it's going to be a while before it hits.

Got "This Ugly Yet Beautiful World" vol. 1 but since Merla and I aren't Doug and don't care to see underage tits and ass, we sent it back and aren't bothering with the rest.

Then we got "Tactics" vol. 1.  It's not terrible but it has pacing issues and uninteresting characters, so I'm certain that's the last we've seen of that.

Started "Mirage of Blaze" and like it so far.

Bernie, just saying (my opinion, of course) but Saiyuki goes pretty downhill a few vols in.  There's one episode that was practically nothing but poorly drawn cut-shots.  Of course, I like Reload and Reload Gunlock better which I've heard ppl loathe.  And Tony Oliver takes over Gojyo anyway.

I kinda wanted to see The Host when it came out in the theater, but then just blew it off.

I saw The Host. It was eh...it was ok, but fell well short of the hype it got.

Yeah, I had remembered you weren't too thrilled with it.  It wasn't high on my list, but my expectations aren't much above bishies & escapism.  Then again, it seems like most of the series I pick up lately either have the writing go to shit or the art gets farmed out to a kindergarten class.  I thought Hellsing Ultimate was safe until Vol. 4 when the Major went off on that 10-minute blatherthon and literally put me to sleep.   :-\

"farmed out to a kindergarten class".   Yeah.  Though, to be clear, "bishies & escapism" were pretty much my motives too.  Have you seen "Mirage of Blaze"?  There's some pretty dudes there.

In my queue.  They actually claim to have all 4 volumes of the first series!  :o

I see what you mean with Saiyuki in Season 2.  Sanzo is bearing a strong resemblance to Ren Hoek in the face - keep expecting Stimpy to pop up.

If you look carefully, you can actually see Son Goku in the background shoveling kitty litter in his mouth.

He & Gojyo need to start playing Don't Whiz on the Electric Fence next time Sanzo whips out the fan.

All righty here, so finished Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle's second season.  I only stuck with it because Merla did and I didn't suffer that much considering I could fast forward through 90% of the thing, which is repetitive trash.  The main couple, Sakura and Syaoran, just aren't interesting.  Those characters do nothing for me (on their own or together).  They don't even inspire revulsion.  It's like watching two bricks interacting.  If all of the episodes were more like #32 "A Date With a Wizard" or the episode where we learn about Kurogane's past, this would be an A series for sure.  Alas, no.

I watched Jyu-Oh-Sei on Hulu.  The reviews I read seem to put it down, primarily the ending, even though the consensus appear to be that it starts well and has potential.  One reviewer's website in particular went on about how supposedly stupid JOS was but then went on to praise Wolf's Rain.  Fucking Wolf's Rain.  Granted, I liked Wolf's Rain.  Didn't love it, but liked it.  You'd think anyone that liked one series with a wonky ending would like another.  If JOS was reminiscent of any other anime series, it's Wolf's Rain.  JOS's even shorter at 11 eps, so it should get points for not wasting your time.  Granted the female characters in JOS are pathetic jokes, which makes me wonder if whoever wrote the story has ever interacted with a woman before.  All in all, it's not bad.

I've currently picked up Peach Girl again.  I wasn't keen with the idea of sticking with Peach Girl via Netflix over a series of weeks as each disc arrives from my queue, but since it's on Hulu and I can watch it at my leisure, I'll go ahead and see how it ends.

I've also been watching Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, granted I've been skipping around episodes so I've only seen five or so episodes from the available fifteen or so.  I like the old art from the first series better.  The differences are subtle in most respects, but it's there: The colored outline of the hair, the odd way they sort of deform (especially Ed), the sleeker less cuter look of some of the characters (it's in some of the faces).

FMA was hard enough for me to get into the first time that I'm not interested in this go-around until I hear about it diverging significantly from the plot of the previous one and getting interesting much sooner.

BTW: Macross Frontier was f'n awesome and it's a great way to cap off the 25th anniversary of the greatest Japanese space opera.

It already diverged at episode 14.  But I can't speak about whether or not it's gotten interesting.  I'm probably disinterested at the moment since...

There's another FMA series?

I'll have to chell that out.

Right now I'm finishing the first Gurren Lagann movie.  If you'd never seen the series I wouldn't recommend it but for someone that wants to watch the series again without actually watching it again this is a great option.  It's got enough of the story line in it to cause manly tears and make you punch a hole in your drywall, clearing a path to the laundry room with your own two hands.

On FMA:

Yeah, there's a new series being aired in Japan and then posted on FUNimation's website later, but other places have it, too.  It's called FMA: Brotherhood and its purpose is pretty much to be an anime series that follows the manga closer than the first series did.  There's no dub yet.  Just saying cos I don't know/remember if you prefer dubs or not.

I prefer a well done dub over a sub.

Watching Hellsing Ultimate Dub ep 4.

If they dub this new FMA I'll watch it otherwise I'm cool for now on that.

It's only up to 16 episodes anyway so if you got hooked, you'd be stuck waiting each week for the new one.

I'll probably end up watching this but only after I've caught up on all the other crap I wanna watch, and hopefully by then a dub will be in the works.

Hellsing Ultimate 4 has an awesome moment where Seras licks Integra's cut finger.

It was a penis moving scene that I recommend to everyone.

Lately I've been leaning towards comedies like Hetalia, Sunred, and Zetsubou-sensei. And maybe a little old school goofy giant robot action à la Mazinger. None of that Code Geass shit for me, thanks. (No offense, IDE.)

Honestly though, current anime is a cesspool of piss poor animation and gratuitous fan service. I just can't stand that shit anymore, seriously. And the rampant pedophilia? Good Lord.

Maybe it's always been that way and it's simply taken me this long to realize it. :-\

I can't even think of the last time I watched a truly great dramatic anime series. Probably Kemonozume or Mononoke, and those were two or three years ago. And guess what? Neither of them have been released or even licensed for North America. Not enough tits and ass, I guess.

Sincerely,
Jaded joerammstein :joe:

The last good goofy giant robot show I watched was Godannar, and it was a hoot.  Granted, it didn't lack for overblown T&A, but that was part of what it was spoofing so YMMV.

QFT.  If I watch a trailer and there's an overflow of boobies or panty shots or even just whiny saucer-eyed heroines with the bodies of prepubescent girls, I just shut that series out.  It could be the best thing since sliced bread but I don't want to watch that shit.  Half the anime out there appears to be tailored specifically for Doug.

I finally got Saiunkoku Disc 4 after a long-ass wait of I forget exactly how long. The story's finally starting to go somewhere after 15 eps, but it has a mild version of the Slow-itis disease that commonly hits anime.  Thankully, unlike Tsubasa RC, it doesn't insist on re-showing us full-length flashbacks everytime a past event is referenced.  Still, one gets the feeling it could hurry its ass up.

Case Closed Season 4 was actually in my queue before Saiunkoku.  The first disc was a bust.  Firstly, because I prefer to watch with subtitles, I quickly realized that CC is only subtitled with the translation from the Japanese.  There is no transcription of any kind for the English dub, which takes huge liberties with names and dialogue.  Even Yu Yu had "dubtitles" but I guess FUNi had to get cheap with CC.  There are like a million fucking episodes so I understand.  I have to say, I think I actually like CC better in Japanese.  The dub actors come across very flat in comparison.  Anyway, the content was shitty.  There were two two-parters and three stand alone eps on this disc, making the count seven.

SPOILAGE or whatever AHEAD:

The plot for one of the two parters was COMPLETELY STUPID (featuring a murderer who NEVER would have been caught if he had just left well-enough alone... or at the very least, concocted a far less elaborate plot.  Think a Die Hard With A Vengeance style overly-complicated wild goose chase, except for no good reason at all) while the other two parter just decided not to MAKE ANY FUCKING SENSE AT ALL.  (This woman actually kills this guy's son-in-law and hides his son's dead body and he's all "There, there, you're still young.  It'sa all right."  FTW!)  One of the stand alone's had Conan using one of the flimsiest pieces of evidence of all time.  Cough drop wrapper, wtf.  Is Japan that harsh that people can get convicted on a cough drop wrapper?  And of course the suspect is all "Da-yum, you gots me.  I better confess."  No, moron!  Call that damn kid on his evidence!  You fucking idiot, you deserve to be caught!  The remaining two episodes with the dead hobo and the one with Detective Mouri/Moore in the hospital were gems that reminded me of why I liked this series.  (While they too had some flimsy evidence, it wasn't shit that was easily refuted like a stupid cough drop wrapper.)  But 2/7 is not a good number by any means, so I kicked the remaining CC Season 4 out of my queue.

CLIFFNOTES VERSION:  No more Case Closed for a long time at least.

And you'd be absolutely right.  I wouldn't say it's crappy and has it's moments, mind you, but you're absolutely right.
