Been watching the English Haruhi Suzumiya stuff. I LIKE the English Voiceacting on it quite a bit. Admittedly Crispin Freeman can't capture the apathy of the Japanese Voice actor, but really I think I enjoy the sarcasm/disbelief Crispin brings to Kyon instead. Rather than the "Huh. She's at it again" personality, the english translation gives him more a "Holy crap. Did she really just Rape Mikuru?!" I like he brings something new rather than trying to imitate the Japanese voice actor, which, in my mind, is what can really make a crappy english translation.

Also of note, the Esper dude is voiced by Johnny Yosch....I think that's his name. He voiced Vash the Stampede and is the former Power Ranger. Wendee Lee as the voice of Haruhi is.....interesting. Not necessarily bad, but definitely interesting.

Of note: I have Superman Doomsday coming next from Netflix, followed by more Haruhi. I may move all of Haruhi to the top. I tend to space out my selections so I can see other things.

Also, has anyone seen Gun Sword, and was it any good? I put the first disc on hold and am really considering taking it off.

I was planning on renting the Disgaea Anime, however Netflix is being retarded and is missing disc 1. Really, Netflix? REALLY? Then again, not surprising considering I've had Reboot Vol. 3 on hold since we first GOT the Netflix account. Great Teacher Onizuka Disc 1 has been on hold forever too. WTF?

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

Move all Haruhi to the top.

I received Hellsing Ultimate Volume 4 in the mail from Netflix.   :poo: :stickdance: :flash: :raiseroof:

I notice that Netflix has three Gurren Lagann 2-disk sets, and I wonder if that's the whole series or there's more coming? I also notice that Lucky Star has only about 4-5 disks out for it, and wonder if that's the whole series.

I'm eventually going to watch Gurren Lagann since I can't move 5 feet in any anime community without everyone screaming how epic it is. Since it looks like Gainax mashed Eva, FLCL, and Abenobashi together to make this, I'm sure it will be good, but I fear it will make me hate all other anime because it will not be able to top the awesomeness.

That had been my problem. Every series out of Japan was the same stereotypical cliche overdone bullshit. If it wasn't some high school nerd dealing with cute girls or killer aliens (or both), it was giant robots and shitty politics.

And then I saw Code Geass and was cured of what ailed me. And now that I'm almost done with R2 (and OMG....who takes the throne!.....), I need more epic. I just don't know if I'll be able to handle all this epic. My head may explode.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

Kite Liberator had a Sopranos style ending. The screen suddenly went blank.

I heard there may be a sequel. I sure as hell hope so, because that ending sucked.

Sequel's on the way.

Of note: I have Superman Doomsday coming next from Netflix, followed by more Haruhi. I may move all of Haruhi to the top. I tend to space out my selections so I can see other things.

IMO, the Doomsday movie was a sad waste.  It could have been much better, but it wasn't, and it had no excuse not to have been.  I'd put it below anything you actually want to see with any immediacy.

Also, has anyone seen Gun Sword, and was it any good? I put the first disc on hold and am really considering taking it off.

Gun Sword was not a quality anime, but I found it to be a lot of fun.  Lots of fighting, chicks, "we're saving the world" angst...sort of like if Vash from Trigun was dour and piloted a mecha.

Great Teacher Onizuka Disc 1 has been on hold forever too. WTF?

GTO is a must see in my book.  I just wish it wasn't as held back and had more of the manga's sensibilities.  Onizuka is destined to become known as one of the classic characters in anime.  As I state in my linked review, "...imagine if IDE was a Japanese schoolteacher..."

I received Hellsing Ultimate Volume 4 in the mail from Netflix.   :poo: :stickdance: :flash: :raiseroof:

I got it, too...last week!  MUAH, HAH-HAH HAA!

I notice that Netflix has three Gurren Lagann 2-disk sets, and I wonder if that's the whole series or there's more coming?

I'm eventually going to watch Gurren Lagann since I can't move 5 feet in any anime community without everyone screaming how epic it is. GL is a love letter to all old-school anime mecha fans.  If you get the Netflix offering, you're also getting the sub-only release, as they haven't released the dub version to DVD yet.  If you want to see the dub (knowing you, probably not), it comes on Sci-Fi channel most Mondays.  But don't start now, because this week they'll be on eps. 21 and 22 of a 27 episode series.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

GL is so good I don't even like mecha shows and I loved it.  I think the only mecha shows I like are Voltron, Tranzor Z, and G Gundam.

Code Geass counts as mecha?  I dunno.

I'm watching Hyakujuo Golion, which is basically Japanese Voltron.  I like it better than Voltron but I don't think Merla does.
I love escargot!  Is that so wrong?

One of these days I might actually cosplay as something.

You know, if I actually get a disposable income, lots of extra money, or maybe get off my lazy ass and just sew something together.

By the time I post again the Convention will have come and gone. I may have pictures.

I thought you already went as the guy from chobits.

There's another anime con coming to miami this weekend, but I don't think I'm gonna go.

Right, but you have "cosplayed as something" before. Just because it's a new year doesn't mean something didn't happen last year.

Unless you're talking about my birthday.

Like that'd stick. Hello piracy! If they were smart they'd pull worldwide releases. I could watch Casino Royale right now, but I won't. Why? Fucker, I got respect.
I said its hot outside let me go swimming in your eyes;

Guess it's too much to hope that the Dragonball live movie be confined to Japan.... :-\

Finally unwrapped & watched Hellsing Ultimate IV last night.  I fell asleep during the Major's speech at the end and didn't wake up until the menu music started.  Granted, it was late, I have a raging sore throat, I was tired from working on the floor in the flooded room followed by a lot of lemon echinacea tea heavily laced with Jameson's, but damn, he went on and on and on....manga panels don't always translate well to screen.  :keelover:

Indeed... the speech didn't seem like it would ever end. How many ways can you describe how mass genocide gives you a hard on?

At a costume contest at an all day anime event, it was only me and a handful of other people, and I won by some miracle, considering my costume involved regular street clothes, cereal box cardboard, markers, glue, some fabric from a thrift shop, and one hour of actual work, for a single small prop for my face.

I won 5 tickets for raffle and a hello kitty plush that I ended up giving away. Armed with 5 more tickets I bought I ended up winning nothing at the raffle... even with them having 2 dozen prizes including entire anime series, dvds, entire manga series, wallscrolls, t-shirts. I saw people buy 50 tickets at $1 a ticket, and then I saw people win multiple prizes, including one guy who won 4-5 prizes. I would whine about the unfairness that some people can afford to spend $50 on tickets  and win half the prizes.... but I talked to someone after the raffle who had spent a lot of money on tickets and hadn't won a thing, so I felt better at their pain and suffering. I would at least suggest the damn raffles this club has every month limit people to just ONE PRIZE per raffle.

The real question is: Why the hell would anyone spend $50 fucking dollars on a raffle when you can use ALL that money to BUY all the anime and manga you want?! Are you that fucking stupid? That's the sole reason I never spend more than $5 at any anime raffle.

Okay, we finished Golion.  It kinda falls apart with the last three discs.  Not that they're bad, they're just not as good IMO.  I think it's mainly because the Golion/Voltron pilots really start to take a back seat in their own show.  At one point, they don't appear until halfway through one episode.  Also, Sincline/Lotor gets over his obsession with the princess pretty damn quick in my opinion.  I think his character was more fun when he was ridiculously obsessed.  Notes about the ending.  Using the spoiler box in case you actually care to be surprised:

Spoiler (hover to show)

I also got through the first two discs of Ouran High School Host Club, which is a neat series.  The English version Tamaki is actually way funnier than the Japanese actor.

I've just started Death Note.  Yay to hearing Brian's voice again.  The commentary on episode one was absolutely pointless.  Over two-thirds of it was just the dude on the commentary telling us things that were happening in the series.  "There's Ryuk.  He's in the shinigami world."  "There's the Death Note."  "Light's killing people."  "Here Light and Ryuk meet."  I don't know why they bothered with it.

Rereading the older posts in this thread, I just realized something.  Crispin Freeman has a nice speaking voice and all, but there's always something about it that doesn't fit the right way and then it hit me:  He sounds completely and utterly in love with himself no matter what character he's playing.  Like if he met his clone, he'd totally fuck it.

I finished watching the English Haruhi and it was good. Except for one part.

The Summer Festival part fails in the singing portion, though really not due lack of Voice Acting talent. This requires explanation.

I'm a bit of a Special Features whore. I love special features on DVD's. Through this, I've learned that, if I recall correctly, an english version of an Anime has "lip flap" that tends to get cut. You're talking about frames of animation that are like one one hundredth or something of a second, and they do this so the english words seem to sync up better with the japanese animation. The Problem with the Summer Festival performance? It was too detailed and high quality in the animation. They could not cut enough "lip flap" to even come close to matching the english voice to the mouth movements, at all, because the Japanese animation team did such a fantastic job animating that sequence it...well it was fantastic. Look at Yuki on the guitar. It's not just generic fingerpicking/strumming animatics. As far as I can tell? It was animated perfectly to the point it seemed IRL accurate in finger placement and such.

Still, Haruhi's singing? Extremely jarring to a Godzilla point. I couldn't figure out why Wendee Lee's words did not match the animation at all until I remembered the entire "Lip Flap" thing.

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

I'm currently slowly watching the devil may cry anime.

What sucks about 7 Samurai is that one of the few episodes I've caught...is the last one. So I already know how it ends and wish I could have watched it in proper order.

Yeah the stand alone ep format is kind of crappy.  I watched 2 or 3 and haven't been compelled to watch anymore.  But it's madhouse so I'll probably go back eventually.

I, uh, watched a couple episodes of Cowboy Bebop again last weekend (there, now I can justify posting in this thread and being part of the group).

I love myself.  I'm awesome.  But there's no way I'd fuck my clone.
