Holy shit.
I just marathoned the last 8 episodes of Code Geass and it was the most epic ending of a season I have ever seen in all of anime.
I won't try to spoil too much but the action and intense drama start around episode 22 where thousands of Japanese are slaughtered by the Empire on national tv. The Empire sees what's going on and mobilizes the military immediately and tries to shut down the broadcast, but rebel agents in the media keep the broadcast going worldwide and upload vids to youtube. The Rebels that were hiding in their mechs around the area in case something went wrong all went on the assault to prevent more innocents from dying.
Then the Japanese rioted en-masse and took over the country one area at a time, and were led by Zero in a massive army to attack the Empire's fortress in Tokyo. Episode 23 ended with Zero giving an ultimatum: Surrender now or burn in hell, fuckers.
Of course the Empire refuses and the 1 hour long season finale was one enormous battle between the Empire and the Japanese rebels, complete with dramatic music and scenes of main characters dying, like a typical war drama:
*two friends fight side by side and one of them dies*
Rebel: "Buddy? Buddy! Say something buddy! Don't die on me!"
Rebel 2: "Tell my wife and kids I *coughs up blood* love... them...." *dies*
Rebel: "NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" *goes on a beserk rampage and kills hundreds of enemy troops before dying.
You know, scenes like that. Not exactly like that, but similar.
The bad thing was this wasn't really the ending of the series and there was a cliffhanger ending. If they do the ending of the entire series as epic and awesome as this, as epic as the ending to Evangelion, then this anime series could rank among the best.
