Posting stuff on my radar for 2023 and some first impressions:

I'd be more on board with this if it didn't look like all of the other characters she interacts it are also cute girls. It appears to be that type of show. I probably won't actually watch this but I'm taking note of it in case I feel inclined to try it later.

I literally thought I got suckered into watching a product commercial again and thinking it was an anime but this is going to be a show. (Whether it's an actual 12-season thing or one of those shows where the eps are two minutes long, I have no idea.)

I HATE THE FLESHTOOTH. And when I looked up info on this show, it feels very much like it's gonna be tryhard edgy. [EDIT: Had to edit a new vid into the this post because the one I linked before got taken down.]

This looks like it could be interesting.  It's a movie, I think. I have to give it points for an atypical-looking heroine.

And is this, um, two furry shows with little girls that is sorta like the Magus' Bride?  But with little white-haired girls and reddish beasts?

The first one feels and looks kinda meh but the second one has me curious as to wtf is going on.

And then there's villainess stuff:

(Showcasing some terrible-looking animation there, Boss Queen.  EDIT: And I had to replace this vid, too.)

This looks interesting. It's at least nice to look at.

"I want Spy X Family." "We have Spy X Family at home."

I watched a bit of Urusei Yatsura with Merla. I'm surprised how much she disliked it. She actually asked me if I was losing brain cells watching it! Like, damn! You unironically watch tarot readings, you don't get to ask me that! :nono:

B-but Lum is so visually appealing and Mendo's funny.

Watching this new one, I can't imagine sitting through the old one. There was some British joke dub made of two episodes of the old one that's getting a lot more attention now. They should dub the new one. It could only be an improvement.

Where's Faye? We need her to weigh in on this. She's the Rumiko fanatic. Or has she already and I missed it?

Anyway... I'm sorry, but you're in the wrong here, and I can't condone it. I refuse to sanction it!

Also, if you convince me that it's worth watching, then it's just one more thing for me to watch, and there's already way too much!

I wasn't really trying to convince you to watch it. I was explaining more as to why I still watch it despite huge portions of it being painfully unfunny. If it had no Mendo and the show didn't have these visuals, it would be an insta-drop down the toilet.

This latest episode has a scene in the school where kids clamour over bread. I haven't seen a scene like that in an anime in a dog's age. Is that even still a thing anymore? I have a crack theory that Rumiko Takahashi has some bread-related trauma from her school days.

Fair. I won't bully you about it. I just need to be able to go YES/NO based on the first episode, and Urusei Yatsura was an easy fail for me. Maybe I'm missing out on something that I would actually end up enjoying? But I can't let myself fall down that hole.

There's a lot starting in January. Seems like we're finally truly on the other side of the COVID anime draught. But man, so much of it looks like low-effort dreck. I know I always say the upcoming season's batch looks terrible, and I'm usually right. So much isekai. Holy fuck, when will it end?

I have very few picks, and some of it is even stuff I'd typically ignore based on animation quality alone, but the premise grabs me for one reason or another.

This seems to be sister turns brother into girl, hijinks ensue? Bonus points for having an art style that doesn't look interchangeable with 90% of everything else debuting in the same timeframe.

I always liked the idea of Trigun more than the actual execution of Trigun. This looks like a straight reboot, and it's done by one of the only studios that seems to have a competent grasp on how to do anime in 3D. They also did Land of the Lustrous and Beastars, for reference.

I feel like they've been teasing this one forever. Don't know that I'm sold on the animation, it resembles the manga, but there's just something slightly off about it that's bugging me.

This one in particular, the character designs/animation style is generic AF. But the whole tomboy has romantic feelings for her longtime guy pal, and dude is all, "Huh? You're my bro, bro!" appeals to me. I have no idea why. I can see myself potentially dumping this one after the first five minutes, if I'm being honest.

Other than that, Nagatoro, Tokyo Revengers, and Vinland are all coming back. I should probably get around to watching the first series of those...

There's no Milly in that Trigun apparently so I'm not all that enthused about it. I thought the Meryl/Milly duo worked together rather well. But I do agree: Trigun's concept was cool and the original's execution was flat. I don't have much faith in any other version of Trigun, especially when a character is deleted out. (And Beastars looked kinda jank.)

Yeah, Beastars was a little wonky. Never finished watching it.

Land of the Lustrous, though? Impeccable. I don't think I've ever seen another 3D TV anime that looks that nice.

Apparently the consensus is that this season (nearly over) was one of the better ones on record. I have enjoyed a number of shows, but apparently the better ones went unwatched. Primarily Chainsaw Man (which looks totally unappealing to me) and Akiba Maid War (ditto). I did however enjoy Eminence in Shadow (last ep of season tomorrow), Raven of the Inner Palace, and Do It Yourself (both of which I'm slightly behind on).

And I'm still catching up on Urusei Yatsura...yes, I know.

My pull list for Spring 2023 includes DanMachi S4 Cour 2 (one of the better runs in the novel), Trigun Stampede (nostalgia), My Life as Inukai-san’s Dog (return of the smut), Chillin' in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army (looked like a hoot), The Misfit of Demon King Academy Ⅱ (I was surprised this got a sequel; I have always liked OP MCs), Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro S2 (Uzaki-chan done...somewhat better), Ayakashi Triangle (return of the smut, part deux), and Lupin III vs Cat's Eye (I've been on a Lupin kick lately).
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I've been watching a lot of anime trailers lately. I'm not sure how many trailers will turn into me actually watching the show tho'... I'd love another comfy Bocchi-like show.

I find that trailers more often than not simply confirm my biases for an anime's promotional imagery. Like, "Oh, this just looks like garbage." Watch the trailer. "Yup, garbage."

And when you watch all of them one after the other you get a real taste for how samey it all is. Trends and trends and trends.

Man, fuck all isekai. Fucking hell.

I love the concept but most Isekai anime don't even use that angle. As in, you could remove the isekai-ing and nothing in the story would change. I wish more was done with the general idea. Like people missing their families or going into hives because Fantasy Unicorn Land isn't gluten-free.

And why is it almost ALWAYS a cheap medieval fantasy setting? Bonus points if it's actually a videogame!

Barf.

Ha ha, yeah. It's like the same video game town. You could splice some of these shows together and pretend everyone's playing on different servers.

Cool to at least see that first scene adapted, which I had read in a fan translation and seen in the manga.

Apparently it's just a special or something. But it's got a neat-sounding Hiroyuki Sawano song to go with it.

And I have to give props to the design style. Gilgamesh's facial profile has a forehead, a nose, and a chin again unlike in prior itinerations (see bottom of linked post). Last batch of Fate shit seriously went the flounder face route. Gilgamesh's features are more narrow and he looks more mature, which suits his character. Even the requisite "cutesy" characters look better in this style. I'm sure as with all Fate media, this special will find the most boring characters and focus on them. But at least everything looks and sounds nice.

Buddy Daddies seems okay? Same production team as Akiba Maid Sensou from last cour. COUR. I hate the term. Like, I get it. I get why you would want to differentiate from "season"... but still.

Anyway, the dude characters seem alright, and the little girl character is seemingly just a little girl. As in, she speaks and behaves like a child would.

I tried one a couple COURS back about a yakuza raising a little girl, and the little girl was totally out of whack. It's almost like she was depressed and neurotic all the time, and while I acknowledge that small children can experience mental health issues, it really doesn't manifest the same way as it would in a teenager or an adult like the way it was depicted here.

Also, the way her head/hair/face were drawn was like... put it like this, you could have taken her head and dropped it onto the neck of any of the women characters and it wouldn't look out of place. Like, "Oh, I have to draw a kid now, guess I'll just draw a lady face like I usually do and put it on this tiny body."

No.

No.

I saw clips of the some show with a yakuza and a little girl. Dunno if that was the same show or not. But it was weird. The dude was acting so fucking dramatic in the clip and I had no idea what I was supposed to feel when watch it. I know it wasn't supposed to be "apathy" but... meh.

You have me curious about Tomo-chan. It was a pass for me because I didn't care for the look of the show and Tomo-chan looked straight out of the generic "Peppermint Patty tomboy in love with her best boy" mold. And maybe there'll be some jokes where she's called "young man" or "sir" and she'll be all angry and the audience is supposed to laugh.

I watched this a couple of times. Some people were calling it a short film but I legit think it's a long commercial, especially because some of the comments mentioned product placement and encouraging students on their exams. Whatever it is, it's great. From the same studio and director as "Summer Ghost."

This show looks kinda interesting.

And then there's this weird show. Which I read spoilers for and I'm even more confused than ever:

That looks like the one where the teen idol gets pregnant and decides to keep it (I guess the norm is for idol agencies to mandate abortion), then her doctor dies and is reborn (isekai style woooooo!) as her child.

I read a few chapters when they were pushing it on Manga Plus a while back. Didn't really grab me.

The CG in Trigun didn't bother me. I thought it was pretty good.

The plot, on the other hand, felt a little limp. It was probably smart to get Vash's origin out of the way up front, but the conflict of the rest of the episode was so manufactured. Like, I get that they want Vash to have his moment to shine, but the setup was complete nonsense.

I'm still hopeful that it'll improve, though.

If you'd rather see some poorly implemented CG in anime, look no further than NieR. Blech.

I hadn't really paid attention to the fact that Trigun was being remade, much less that it would be in 3D. I'm not a fan, but it's not bad. Storywise I imagine treating a 25 year-old story like it's a big mystery would be pretty stupid, so a re-write was warranted, and apparently Nightow is directly involved with the scripts. But I will admit to being pissed that they turned his .45 Long Colt into a fucking .22LR...as a gun guy, what a complete load of horseshit.

First episode of Hikari no Ou was solid. It's a got a good look to it. Nice character designs, cool premise. Not sure how I overlooked it when I went digging through all the winter trailers.

That reminds me, Ooyukiumi no Kaina has a neat premise marred by absolutely rancid CG. Ugh. Putrid.

The first couple episodes of the new Junji Ito show on Netflix were kind of rough. Very clearly done on the cheap. They should just give up.

I like the intro/outro songs + visuals. Both segments of the 4th episode were pretty good.

I have no real history with Junji Ito, so I always just assumed everything he did was meant to be bone-chilling/upsetting, but there's very clearly some inherent goofiness in some of these stories. Like, it's not unintentional. But then other times scenes are so cheaply animated/scored that what's meant to be disturbing just ends up being underwhelming/lame.

I'm still watching it, so I guess I can't say it's a complete waste.
