Compared to ATLA, I can't think of anyone I actually hated or disliked in that show at all. I'm struggling to think of someone. Like, not even the villains. They made the villains sufficiently bad but ATLA applied antagonistic force without creating annoyance.

The characters that I hated in ATLA were all characters that weren't there very long. Any character that was in more than one episode typically had something about them sort of fleshed out. Closest I came to hating a regular character was Admiral Zhao.

I liked Zhao. I never rooted for Zhao but I liked the conflict he brought to the story. In fact, I'd say Zhao appeals to me more as a character than the majority of the Legend of Korra cast. Although he's another character the Legend of Korra saw fit to assassinate. I know he appeared but I never watched the scene he's in. He had purpose and ambition and he'd rather die than accept help and all of that was powerful in a kids' show. Undoing his death in the dumb sequel series was another cheap trick in their cheap-ass hat of tricks.

I am disgusted ! Rumiko , you fucked UP girl. Sesshomaru ended up having babies with Rin? Rin as in, the girl he took care of since she was 9? what in the onision-grooming-hell is this? Btw I spend half of my time on IG bitching about this under posts of "sessrin ftw! sessrin confirmed!" I just want to vomit.
Can someone find out if that memory-erasing machine from Eternal Sunshine of a spotless mind exists already? I want to act like this shit didn't happen/doesn't exist.
Also it doesn't help that my kids are watching Inuyasha and they love it (well obviously, I love it too ) and they are going through the first episodes with Rin, while at the same time they were watching Yashahime on tv (although I stopped this a month ago because I saw the clues coming in- clues about who the mom was). Now how am I supposed to explain this abomination to them?  ::)

So found out that Rumiko Takahashi is not above other thirsty authors (looking at you Hideaki Anno) and decided to start milking Inuyasha again. New anime about Sesshomaru and Inuyasha's kids. I hate it already but of course I will watch it. Need to find out who daddy Sessh decided to bang (pls no Rin)

I looked this up--Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon--and it seems really interesting. My huge gripe with Takahashi was her having characters that didn't grow or change. Like Ranma 1/2 which ran for like nine years with little to nothing of significance occurring nearly the entire time. At least this sequel will acknowledge characters growing up and having lives. And it's an anime thing so it doesn't appear to be something she's gonna draw for years and years until it's stale and ground into the dirt.

And, sorry to dash your hopes, but one of the girls looked like Sesshomaru crossed with Rin. I think Rin got Usagi Drop'ped. :raiseeyebrow:

Quoting us earlier in this thread.  Poor Sesshomaru's been dragged with this writing. Guys boinking the little girl they're raising is gross. And it doesn't help that Rin looks twelve lying down there after giving birth.  Poor little girl.

This is the danger of allowing a stan to make canonize their fan fiction with a tv show.  Also, this makes obscuring the mother's identity tons more ridiculous because making Rin the mom was the laziest choice they could've made. Also, hiding the mom from the viewer has no bearing on the story.

Has Sesshomaru shown any sexual feelings at all? He always seemed like the type that would just breed to produce some high quality pure demon heirs.

I scaled back significantly this season. I'm just watching the Slime show, the latest Seven Deadly Sins, and the second season of the one about the 5 identical chicks to whom some idiot made a promise ten years ago.

Nada, the ice king still being the ice king. Did you see the episode of the twins' birth? (last week). He just went in the room, took the girls, didn't even say shit to Rin, and bounced.  And you're right, Rin looked exactly like she did when she was 9.
Btw one of the excuses of the fans of this shit that I've seen on IG is that "demons only care about your feelings uwu". Bitch where is that info from?  They are reaching.

What do you mean by Rin got Usagi drop'ed? Are you talking about the age of difference between her and Cuckmoru?

The story Usagi Drop pretends to be a sweet story about a thirty year old man taking care of a six year old orphaned female relative. And when you watch the show, it's like "awww, that's sweet. He's stepping up and struggling with being a dad." The anime is short so it stops before a time skip in the story. Well, in the manga, when the girl is sixteen she starts having feelings for her cousin/guardian/dad figure and he for her. They find out they're not actually related and get married and she wants his baby. It's really gross. Turns a 9/10 story into an abuse narrative with some creepy groomer.

Oh, yeah, and I should mention the girl's name is also Rin.

The first episode of Kemono Jihen was pretty damn good. Something about the art style caught my eye initially, and the animation is solid. I think they've got me on the hook for the rest of the season.

Watched Kemono Jihen and it's pretty good so far. Nice to look at and doesn't appear to be thumbing its own ass. :) Also, it made me really hungry for pizza. :(

Hahaha. Yeah. Trippy and artsy-fartsy. Nice looking, other than some wonky CG elements.

I'm trying to remember what other first episodes I sampled recently.

Urasekai Picnic might be promising, but I'm on the fence. The animation is kind of just... adequate. I could see it very easily going south as the series progresses.

SK8 the Infinity I almost shut off after about 5 minutes, but then it ended up grabbing me somehow. Maybe it's the highly unusual competitive skateboarding premise? Only thing is, practically every character looks like they fell out of an otome game, so I'm guessing this one is aimed at a very specific demographic.

Oh, yeah, I saw a couple of clips of this and some visuals and was confused on if it was a BL/yaoi anime or something. The director has directed Free! and Bananafish so it could go a bit homo. I haven't seen any full episodes or anything. It'll probably just be plot + fujo-teasing similar to Free!

So I watched Goro Miyazaki's movie adaptation of the Earwig and the Witch. It's actually pretty decent. I mentioned this story in the book thread because I had listened to the audio book back in December. The book this movie is based on is basically "little spoiled orphaned witch Earwig unslaves self from weird-ass foster parents Bella Yaga and the Mandrake."

tl;dr is that I give it a solid 4 out of 5. Decently executed from the source material but has room for improvement. The word vomit version of this below:

I think a lot of folks won't like it because the expectations for this studio are the next Totoro and Kiki. Not just that, but I also think that Ghibli movies have the general expectations of "comfyness." They're films you can watch on a cold and rainy day by the fire with a hot cup of cocoa. But this film sorta, uh, isn't. To me in most part because the music is a bit jarring. Both the diegetic and incidental portions. And also, um, the abuse. To be frank. Ha ha. I'll explain.

So going bit by bit here...

Animation - This would've been much better with a more 2D look. The CG looks cheap but it actually has a quality I can appreciate. The weird playdoh liquids, the stiff hair, the rubbery-looking plants, Bella Yaga's strange high-heeled Wellies... like, it's not beautiful but it's not ugly either. The textures sorta fascinate me. 2D would've allowed a greater range of expressions and more cuteness than what the 3D here was able to give us.

Music - The music could've been "fixed" by making the musician characters folk rock types and matching the incidental background music to the general vibe. Think Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" or Heart's "Dreamboat Annie." I think they got the era right (the 70's) but the instruments are clashing about and I don't find it suits the story. What's there isn't awful but it's not very Ghibli-esque. People expect Joe Hisashi and they're not gonna get him. He's busy on Hayao's film.

Voice acting - "Nonsense!" said in English by Japanese ladies is gold. Haven't seen the Eng dub. Everybody was good.

Story - It's kinda hard to really adapt this story to be a comfy film when it's a weird abuse narrative. There's also no major climax to the story other than Earwig getting the Mandrake pissed off enough to make Bella Yaga agreeable so Earwig can go to normie school and learn magic on the side. She's basically a slave but in the "I'm a slave and that's kinda annoying" sorta way. Bella Yaga just goes to an orphanage to get this forced servant and the Mandrake doesn't give a shit as long as he's not "disturbed." (In other words don't piss him off. Yikes.) All that shit's just weird. I guess cause I expect it more from a Dahl story than a Ghibli adaptation.

Earwig's mother doesn't play a real part in the book although the reader is informed clearly the woman's a witch and on the run from other witches. The musician element in this movie is absent from the book. The author died before she could write any sequels so unknown what the plan was regarding reuniting Earwig with her mom or if that'd even happen.

That said, the main story itself was adequately adapted and the musician angle was actually a nice touch. It rounded out everything and gives the viewer more on the mother. And while that's all great, it feels like this movie never revs up and goes anywhere. I saw and read a few reviews and the guys reviewing it all had that general consensus of "okay, now what" after it was done. Reading the book tempered my expectations enough to enjoy this for what it was and appreciate the extra tidbits we got.

Characters - Earwig's about two degress less likeable than Sen/Chihiro from Spirited Away. So brattier and manipulative but not completely unlikeable. But she certainly will be few people's favorite witch or Ghibli heroine.

Thomas the cat is a step above Jiji but less cute than Jiji.

Bella Yaga is The Witch of the Waste + the two old witches in Spirited Away + Manic Panic Rockabilly blue hair dye + some retro-looking clothes. Put all of that in a bowl, age her down, give her a drum kit, and make her perpetually on the rag. That's Bella Yaga in a nutshell. She seems okay in the end but it does leave the viewer wondering if she's mentally ill. Like she'd just adopt a slave from the orphanage and be an asshole when she's capable of being cool and nice? It's weird.

The Mandrake doesn't have much to him but I like his general design.

The Mom seems really cool and smoking hot but she's barely in this movie.

The little demons are cute and wish we got more of them. Shame we didn't.

Advertising - The way this is being marketed is crazy as hell. It appears to be a rock musical and it's not. It also appears to be sold as a "find your mom" narrative and it's not that either. It's not Harry Potter but it's also not Kiki. So I think people will get confused watching this and wondering where it's going only to be let down in the end.

All said, still waaaaaay better than Mary and the Witch's Flower. And I like it better than Laputa. Supposedly, Goro would like to do a series. I can't find where I read that or verify it's true but this being a tv movie in Japan lends credence to that, I think. If so, I'd love to see more.

I'm gonna come back and read all this once I've watched it myself. But just let me say this:

My immediate reaction to your post was, "How did she get this?! I steal everything and I haven't seen this anywhere!" Like, undiluted jealous outrage.

Then I checked one of my places and they had it so I calmed the fuck down.

Seriously, though. I'm honestly embarrassed. "HOW DARE SHE?!?!?!"

Yeah, this movie really, really felt more like an introductory batch of episodes meant to kick off a TV series than a stand-alone narrative.

And maybe it was just the English dub, but I never got the impression that Earwig was all that bent out of shape about her situation. I understand the whole child labor aspect of it, but she just kind of took it in stride. And there was no genuine animosity or threat of violence to make you feel like she was in any kind of peril.

I'm sure it would all make more sense to me if I was familiar with the source material. I was able to enjoy it for the most part. Like you said, it's a little low budget in the visual department, but nothing egregious.

What's Hayao working on? Is it also CG?

Yeah, her goal wasn't necessary to free herself. Earwig wanted to assert dominance and rule the roost like she does at the end of the movie. She was only gonna try to run away if she couldn't control the "parents."

I'm gonna chalk it up to generation and cultural differences on the author's part. She died ten years ago and she was old. She grew up with different norms and I'm sure when she was a child it was less egregious to adopt an orphan for labor as long as you fed it and gave it a bed to sleep in. Bella Yaga wasn't gonna let the girl even go to school and the only reason Earwig wanted to go was to see Custard. Our modern-day notion that this girl would be robbed of an education is not a thing in this universe. In the movie they emphasize that these kids read above their level so, uh, it's almost like they don't even neeeeeed education, amirite?

Papa Hayao's working on a 2D feature. There's article that mentions hand-drawing frames so I'm assuming 2D. I'm actually not quite clear what it's about. It's not based on a book exactly but the character in the story apparently is influenced by a specific book. Honestly, it sounds like it'll be another The Wind Rises but Miyazaki is supposedly making this for his grandson so, eh, I dunno. I have no idea how old his grandson is.

I forgot that I had started "So I'm a Spider, So What?" I don't recall if I posted anything about it so here it goes. I wanted to like this but the budget constraints really show so it's generally not so nice to look at. Ugly CG. Just ugly. Like, Jujutsu Kaisen has visible purse string tightening, too, but that show is visually just way more appealing than this one.

The premise is that this quiet loner highschool girl is isekai'd into a "video game" type world with her classmates. They're (mostly) human characters while she's a shitty spider monster. But they don't realize she's a spider in this world or even know where she's at. She improves greatly on her own and becomes OP or whatever.

I've seen complaints about this show "focusing on the humans" instead of the spider girl as time is divided between what the spider is doing and what her classmates are doing. And while I'm usually on board with that type of complaint, I actually do find the humans and their dynamics to be interesting. In this instance, the humans are supposed to contrast directly with the spider since they're all classmates so they work well in that regard.

This show also has a lot of the spider screaming a bunch and the ED music is full of "screamy" sorta vocals to the point I do find it obnoxious. That doesn't seem to be a fair assessment for this show because she should be screaming given what's she going through. I still find it grating. The ED is like a headache in song form.

However, my main issue comes from what I found out going through the spoiler rabbit hole for this show.

So...

It turns out she's not a highschool loner girl after all, she actually IS a spider. She's the spider that was in the fucking classroom when all the occupants of the classroom got isekai'd. The spider was isekai'd into a fantasy spider but has the loner girl's memories or something. And loner girl is some asshole god or something, I dunno. That just completely deflated my excitement on the general premise. What the fuck is this if the premise isn't true? Isn't the appeal of this the highschool girl all on her own as a spider? Like, "oh no, she became a spider instead of becoming a human so what does she do now?" The fuck I care about some rando spider? It just really annoyed me. I feel like this is just a betrayal of the premise and don't feel invested in story anymore.

Now maybe I'm just misunderstanding what I read, but I don't give a fuck about a rando anime spider. It's like those shows that do some wacky shit and are all "just kidding, it was all a dream"? That shit's lame.

I tried to give that spider show a chance, but they get into the heinous CG almost immediately and that was just the kiss of death for me.

And that spoiler section somehow reminds me of when I found out that Spider-Ham was not an anthropomorphic pig that was bitten by a radioactive spider, but rather a common household spider that was bitten by a radioactive anthropomorphic pig.

After watching Space Sweepers, back on rewatching Cowboy Bebop. I really just need more spaceship stuff to watch.

DBGT. Kind of makes me feel like those SWfans who flip-flopped on the Prequel Trilogy after the Sequel Trilogy came out. "I changed my mind, I see now that the prequels are actually amazing!"

Seriously, DBS is so miserable, you guys. It makes GT seem perfectly competent by comparison. Also, glorious pre-digital era cel animation, holy shit! Feels like I'm watching Slayers or something.

I'm almost amazed people don't let DB die. Well, I don't mean die die.  But, like, Sailor Moon-die.  Where it still gets talked about an' shit and they're still tryin' to make some money off of it every once in a while. But, you know, considerably less shat into the ground repeatedly like the whole DB franchise is.  And I say "almost amazed" in that I'm not amazed they're trying to squeeze every dollar, yen and peso out of it as possible. But what possible stakes or excitement could even be left in this? It's gotta be like zombie-Simpsons by now, right? Just a spiky-haired shell of its former self.

I'm really enjoying the current Simpsons fan narrative of, "Oh, have you watched it lately? It's actually pretty good again!"

To be fair, I haven't, but it still makes me laugh to think about it.

I checked back into spider-anime purely out of boredom. The episode I picked off of made me felt like I had barely missed anything, which I thought was pretty funny. After about 12 eps or so, the spider finally made it outside. (She was in a cave the entire time so far and only the human characters were outside.) Spider has more skills now, I guess. While seeing her earn those things was sometimes interesting, it was equally also tedious because it's not like we're watching a person grow. It's just a spider. So meh. I wonder how many people are gonna be mad when they find out what she really is? But that also depends on if that part gets animation because, you know, people hate reading. lol

I did also watch the latter-half of the movie "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas." Weird name but was interesting. I'll sit down and watch the rest of it another day. But I saw a review talking about it so I ended up watching the last forty minutes or so. It seemed good.

I looked up that Pancreas thing because I had to know what it was about... and it looks like some kind of teen romantic tragedy? Not at all what I was expecting.

Spring anime is showing up and I feel overwhelmed. I already have a massive backlog of previous seasons, and I think I might just end up conducting another great purge. Like am I ever actually going to watch stuff that's been sitting on a hard drive for three years, untouched?

They finally announced JoJo Part 6. It's little more than an image and a single line of dialogue from the lead character, but I'm excited.
