I tried watching that firefighter show, and it just felt like My Hero but every character is limited to flame-centric abilities. Fire is the theme, I get it, but still. And it's this near future sci-fi setting, but all the characters are these medieval fantasy archetypes? I don't know. Maybe I'll watch some more.

That show looked meh to me. I wish there was something else I felt like trying but... I guess S3 of Aggretsuko's coming out soon so there's that. I don't really have much in the way of expectations for it though. Not after that X-mas special and that second season.

Uzaki-chan just kind of kept on trucking until the end and didn't have a big cliffhanger or anything. They could dive into that show a long time before hitting bottom with such an open-ended premise. The side characters really made this show fun.

Monster Doctor ends today. It's been building to a conclusion, but it's basically just a harem show. My interest is still there, but I'm expecting an ending that will satisfactorily close the book on this show.

Misfit of DKA has been much fun and is Anime of the Season for me despite the highly rushed ending. It ends the storyline nicely but leaves enough untied strings to make a second season quite doable. I hope it returns.

Fall 2020 only has one show I'm interested in, and that's DanMachi season 3. However I'm completely spoiled as I've read the light novels already...

I'm just excited King's Avatar season two finally started up after three years of waiting. Yeah, it's Chinese but I'm not really watching anything else.

Watched Yashahime episode 1... which was literally 20 minutes of the OG Inu-Yasha characters after the original series ended and less than 1 minute of these new characters where they didn't do shit.  They could've made this episode an Inu-Yasha special that was separate from this show or given us the information in this episode in tiny pieces throughout the series without having the old characters take over the first episode.

Like, it wasn't bad or anything. The old characters still hold up and have chemistry together. But I don't think it's a good sign for the newer characters to not let them try and stand on their own first. I would've rather gotten 20 minutes of learning who Towa is and see her living in our world and then returning to the feudal era at the end of the episode. But whatever, I guess.

Wow, this season is fucking abysmal. The 'rona strikes again, I guess? First episode of Jujutsu Kaisen was alright.

I'm watching Yashahime just to find out who dat baby mama is but, goddammit, these three Mary Sues make me cringe. Which is a shame because all the girls are cute but their skillsets are literally someone's Inuyasha OCs and their personalities are flat. Frankly, the show is trying to push them as a friend group when the connection hasn't been earned.

This story's a muddled mess, too. Even the characters just feel completely unengaged with whatever narrative is supposed to be here. Characters are given critical information and barely react to it, like they can't be bothered to participate. Like in one episode it's clear that Moroha somehow forgot or never knew Kagome. The fuckin flea spits out who Kagome is in the recent ep and there's no reaction at all. Not even from Towa. And this show doesn't want to explain or even touch upon the fact that all of these characters should all be intimately acquainted with one another.

Like, fine, Moroha forgot her parents. She admitted she doesn't know Kagome and I don't she think she's mentioned her dad even once. But she knows Myoga. She knows the demon slayer family or at least two of them. So she should at least have second-hand knowledge. I don't remember if she knows Kaede personally Kaede knows who she is. Have they never conversed aside from having Kaede basically watch her purse?

Also, how did Sesshomaru father these girls in secret? Wouldn't everyone know who they are and who their mom is? This is Kaede's fuckin village, right? Shouldn't everyone know all about the dog demon brothers?

And why was Towa so ready to apologise to the demon and his son killing villagers by stealing their skeletons but refused to apologise to the delinquents? As in, this latest episode tried to characterize Towa as someone who's conflict avoidant but that's completely inconsistent with what we saw in ep 2 or whatever. Nevermind that Towa just found out her bio dad's a demon and just, uh, doesn't seem to care? She's been in our world so shouldn't this be some sort of crisis for her?

I mean, at least I can't say it went below my expectations because my expectations were already pretty low. The Mary Sue thing I knew we'd get because modern media seems to have a real hard time letting women protags genuinely struggle and earn shit. But I did not expect to be this fucking confused with the story nor this teased regarding the girls', er, uh, maternity. Or would I still use the word paternity?

I can't bring myself to watch that. Just feels so cynical. Like, Inuyasha: The Next Generation. Blech.

First episode of Akudama Drive was okay.

Inuyasha:TNG actually wouldn't have been so bad compared to what we got. The level of disconnect between the old characters and the new ones is just fucking weird.

Here's my current watch list:

Yuukoku no Moriarty (Moriarty the Patriot) - Basically a take on James Moriarty from the Sherlock Holmes stories. Basically, James Moriarty sees England as a corrupt oligarchy that needs to be taken down to reform it, and he's helped by his two Moriarty brothers in his quest. They apparently cross paths with a young Sherlock Holmes at some point, but the first three episodes are origin shows. As opposed to the Consulting Detective, the Moriarty brothers are Consulting Criminals. Anyway, it's been pretty sharp so far.

Munou na Nana (Talentless Nana) - some aliens are coming to kill the planet, and it's up to the superhumanly powered Talented to save the world. To this end they're gathered together in a high school to train, but something is completely weird about the scenario. Watching the first episode is jarring and sets up the rest nicely. Things are definitely not what they seem, and Nana's going to get to the bottom of it. Not your run of the mill oddball at a special student academy anime.

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei (The Irregular at Magic High School, season 2) - This actually IS your run of the mill oddball at a special student academy anime, but it's a good one if you can get past the extensive explanations of how magic works in this world and the overly-clingy bro-con sister in it. I love anime with overpowered MCs, and this has quite an overpowered MC. I started the first season from 2016 a couple weeks ago and wound up binging it, not realizing season 2 was coming this year. So anyway, happy coincidence.

Iwa Kakeru! (Sport Climbing Girls) - sports anime with high school girls contorting themselves to climb walls. I probably shouldn't admit to watching it, but it's your usual plucky high school amateur making waves in a sport she knows nothing about. It's cute.

Majo no Tabitabi (Wandering Witch) - very nicely animated, it features a young witch traveling the world for the heck of it, getting into other people's stories. I usually like this type of show, and it's delivered so far. It's light fare thus far, and I hope it stays that way.

Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, or DanMachi, season 3) - I enjoyed the first season and its spinoff so much that I read the whole light novel series. Now I'm totally spoiled and hate the pace of the anime. Season 2 was much heavier in tone than the first, and the third is going to be even more so. But I'm invested in it at this point. You probably know if you like DanMachi or not already.

Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen (Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World, or KimiSen) - Basically a Romeo and Juliet type affair, with a young paladin character from the empire tasked with eradicating the young witch general of the neighboring magic kingdom, but they hit it off and try to figure out a way to stop the war. Very well produced show, but it may turn out more heady than I care to keep up with. We'll see, but the fights are visually fun.

Watching Jujutsu Kaisen right now and I see the potential here... that said, it sort of falls flat. Which is a bit disappointing because the fights and curses and stuff is cool. But the moments of levity felt misplaced. And the main character feels weak. As in his motivation doesn't feel strong. "Muh grandpa's last request" and "curses bad, guise" just doesn't cut it. I mean, the grandpa was telling him other shit too but this kid didn't give that shit any weight.

Yeah, Burn the Witch wasn't bad. I wanted to like it more than I did, but whatever. Pretty paint by numbers, but I guess you could level that criticism at the vast majority of anime these days.

Also, the whole "set in the Bleach universe" is like, why? That only serves to work against it. MOAR LIEK BLECH AMIRITE.

Jujutsu Kaisen, I tried the manga first, seemed a little bland. I checked out the anime because of my limited familiarity, and it seemed like maybe the animation, voice acting, music, etc. was helping to overcome the blandness somewhat. Still haven't watched anymore of it, though.

At least I've barely watched any Bleach so I was sorta indifferent to the whole shared universe thing.

Yeah, I tried to sit and watch it but was bored with it. The Soul Society stuff looks like it might be worth trying but certainly nothing else.

Also, the latest ep of Jujutsu Kaisen was pretty cool, not gonna lie.

Had you seen Legend of Korra before watching ATLA? Since you're watching ATLA for the first time, I'm just curious. I mean, I know they say not to let sequels or whatever "ruin" the original for you. Like, "the original won't be ruined no matter what comes after it." But, man, LOK took a big fat dump on ATLA.

I really want to like Jujutsu Kaisen more than I do. Some of the characters are really good and the whole Sukuna thing has a lot of potential. But why was it necessary for wallow in the suffering of the emo kid when he just gets fridged? He had a whole episode and then some. I hate when shows and movies think we need to engage in a character's suffering directly and to excess in order to feel any empathy when that character dies. They could've easily have cut out the episode that was mostly focused on this kid and swapped a few scenes with the other episodes and it would've been fine. When you do shit like that, it just makes the audience feel like they wasted they're fucking time. I'm gonna assume it was a faithful adaptation of the manga that pulled the same shit but it's still an annoying thing to do.

No. I watched Aang and then Korra. (Outside of the US ATLA is called Avatar: The Legend of Ang, which is neat.) I loved the Aang run so much and I really wanted to like Korra but I had some big issues with the show, mostly around how they dealt with the bad guys. Amon and Zaheer both were right about a lot.

Maybe a lot of Amon's followers would have been mollified if there were at least some non-benders on the Republic City council. Non-benders could command the United Forces, why not city council? If going for equal representation, maybe the council should have ensured there were always non-benders on the council (they did change to a single elected president in season 2 but I don't know that this solved the issue, though some form of council also still existed, this president seemed more like an elected king).

Some of Zaheer's core principles were awesome. Disbanding monarchies is +++ for me, and by extension not allowing for the hoarding of wealth. I don't agree with completely destabilizing the Earth Kingdom, though. If you're going to displace a monarch, you need to have a plan for how to either keep that powet vacuum unfilled or ensure whoever takes over isn't a fascist despot (eg, Kuvira). Preferably governance is democratized but it doesn't seem like the needed political theories exist in this world at this point.

Unalaq deserved to die but he was right about opening the spirit portals, which could have happened without his dumb ass getting eaten by a mega-spirit. It was a good idea. Kuvira was only right in that allowing the Earth Kingdom to become so destabilized, Zaheer did more harm than good. Sure, she helped build up some infrastructure, but the means of her goals were completely fucked. I really hated Korra's last scene with her where Korra empathized with her. It felt so disgustingly liberal to me. She told her she understood her not wanting her people to be vulnerable, but Kuvira literally exploited the vulnerability of her own nation, I just don't see how anyone could empathize with that shit.

Before watching the show, I'd hear a lot of people talk about how awesome Korra and Asumi were as a couple but it was just kind of a thing that happened at the end? There were hints towards it but it felt unearned to me. I had to consider it in the context of when the show as released and how little LGBTQ representation there was in that period. Still cool, though, and they make sense together.

Bolin>Mako. Mako is just a fuckboy, I guess, I can't figure out what it is I didn't like about him. Bolin's also cuter with his little nose and mannerisms.

In comparison, I feel like some of villains in Aang's story had more time to develop as characters, where we had such a short amount of time with the villains in Korra's story. Zuko's redemption arc felt earned rather than rushed like often happens in these kinds of stories. He saw the material conditions caused by his family's actions and realized he wasn't okay with it. Uncle Iroh in a similar fashion, though it seems most of his growth was before the story started. We aren't expected to empathize with the "real" villains (the Firelord, the earth guy) in the show, which end up being more like unmovable forces of nature than characters that can be reasoned with. I was good with that.

Anyway, I'm guessing you weren't expecting a wall of spit out consciousness and it probably wasn't that well thought out, sorry for that. TLDR: Aang>Korra.

Wall of text on LOK even though it's not anime but who cares:

Yeah, Legend of Korra had all of the tools to be great except the writing. If you just read descriptions or watch tiny clips of it, it seems like it should be great. The music, the artwork, the animation is all fantastic. But the stories in it don't make any sense. The characters were also, well, just assassinated.

Katara would never just sit around in the South Pole on her ass and nod her head at the idea that the avatar should be locked away from all society. Even if she herself was too frail to leave, she would've been heavily involved in Korra's training. Aang would never show favoritism to one child over the other in the way it's implied in this show. I have no doubt that Katara and her children would ALL be mentors to Korra in some capacity. They would all have air bender spirituality to impart to her from Aang. Seeing them apply the lessons of their parents in their own unique ways would've been interesting. It could've been a tug of war or a competition between them about how to best mentor Korra. It's a really sad, missed opportunity.

And Zuko, who became a friend to the avatar... who became, we should say, the most powerful and important friend to the avatar in terms of the global scale of this world. He's just also completely unconcerned about her all of this time? I don't buy it. Zuko at the end of ATLA became a young man who knew he had to make amends. Not just for his own actions but the actions of his father, paternal great-grandfather, and even of his sister. He also had a duty as the leader of his nation and the great-grandchild of Avatar Roku. He would've been heavily involved as well with the new avatar. Even if not him directly, then General Iroh or someone in his stead. To make sure the avatar remains not just protected but educated in the ways of the world. The Order of the White Lotus was presented to us as somewhat serving this role but it was just to villainize them as stuffy old men. It's a fucking insult to Iroh, King Bumi, Jeong Jeong, Pakku, and Piando. They were not just a bunch of stuffy old men.

Cutting the line of avatars is heresy. Also, making all the air benders come back is so fucking cheap. It would've been more powerful if Zaheer was somehow able to get air bending for himself. Because now there'd be another air bender but Korra and friends are faced with the fact that he's dangerous and wants to hurt people. The whole benders vs non-benders was a fantastic concept but it was clearly above the writers. Instead of showing how Korra, Lin, Tahno and whoever else lost bending has to learn to compensate without it, it becomes a "lmao, just kidding, here's yo powers back."

They also needed to outright cut some of these characters out or re-use some of the people we met earlier. I lost interest into S2 and would come back and chell out of the show intermittently until the end of its run. Often there would be all of these faces on the screen and I'd have no idea who they were. Whoever was in charge of this show slammed too many characters in it. A bunch of the earth kingdom and water tribe characters were completely unnecessary. New sets of villains every season? WHY? Keep the story set in Republic City and reuse people we've already met. Make the triad a greater threat. Make the Republic city council a greater threat. Make Zaheer's group invade the city. Imagine if in every instance we encountered Suki in ATLA, it had been a new character instead. Or having the Order of the White Lotus appear at the end of the series and it was five completely new old men instead of the five old guys that had appeared earlier in the show. That's pretty much what they did here.

Also, I really, really hate Bolin. Like, I hate Mako, too. Mako should've been some Mai-type character who appears in a few episodes and then fucks off to brood by himself in a corner. But Bolin is Sokka minus all of Sokka's charm. This is another writing assassination. Bolin was supposed to be a confident ladies man. It was in his 2012 description on their official website, I shit you not. I looked for citation and couldn't find any aside from a stray comment or two on the internet where other people make reference to it. I recall it clearly because I thought his looks didn't match with how that type of character is portrayed and was interested in seeing the result. He was not supposed to be some pathetic, unfunny, insecure chud that cries when his crush kisses his brother, has a stalker that's played for laughs, and forces a kiss on an actress without her consent. But somewhere along the way, someone (or someones) turned him into the butt of the joke and the second fiddle to his hot boring-ass brother.

Someone behind the scenes loves the Discount Sokka model. They made both Bolin and Lance from Legendary Defender into Discount Sokka which is just a goofball cracking a bunch of jokes. Sokka, however, had a duty to his tribe, his honor as a fighter, clear goals, and planning/strategic abilities. He was insecure but developed against those insecurities to earn a place of value with all of the bending characters. Being an "idiot huckster" is a trait among his other traits. For Bolin, it's like the main trait and it's so obnoxious. (I didn't stick with new Voltron so can't speak about Lance.)

Asami was supposed to be evil in this show and they made her good. Which is fine because I like her design and wanted more Asami. But then they gave her nothing in terms of further development. Making her evil, then good, then a friend, then a girlfriend to Korra would've been great. Having her develop with Korra and Korra's mentors would've been really nice.

And also... I really liked Tahno. I wanted a redemption arc for him and I wanted him to live without bending anymore and needing to adjust. It's been almost eight years since I've seen the episodes he was in and he still left an impression on me. He had a presence that the brothers and Tenzin's kids just don't have. They should have those three and maybe Bolin but the way he was originally conceived as a smooth ladies man earth bender that doesn't simp his friends.  Mako just joins the police force and is a tertiary character.

Also... have Korra actually use the damn bear. I picture it in a parking space somewhere with a bunch of parking tickets slapped to her face. You don't sell us on her having an animal like Aang and then shoving the animal aside. Honestly, if I knew I wasn't gonna actively use the bear character, I would've ditched it. Keep Pabu with Bolin and add in a bird or something for Asami. Or keep the bear but make it smaller.

Sometimes, I really just want to reboot all of this into a fan fiction but I really should be writing my own stories.

OT, I watched Laputa Castle in the Sky around when I first found out I got sick. Like LOK, it has all sorta of elements that should make me fall in love with it so why do I find it so goddamn boring?

I think when I first posted in this thread, I didn't actually realize that a lot of people don't consider this an anime because it's not a Japanese animation. But then you could get into a quagmire about what really is animation by discussing Korean and Chinese products that are extremely similar, and then branching out to other parts of the world with shows that look like what people think anime looks like, etc, and so on. Oh well.

I agree with your take on Bolin, I just thought he was better than Mako, at least in some points. I should have said, Bolin got progressively worse as the show went on. I think my gut thought of him being better than Mako are largely based on his first few appearances. Movie-star Bolin was fucking awful. My opinion also might be colored by Pabu, who is a hybird of one of my favorite animals, probably my favorite mammal.

Tahno was awesome and the fact that he completely disappeared, didn't even show up to help defend Republic city or anything, makes 0 sense.

I honestly think they just shouldn't have had the polar bear dog. The sky bison were just too convenient that having this big ass beardog was kind of useless most of the time after she left the south. Maybe it should have stayed there with her parents. If they'd kept it focused in Republic City, I wonder if they'd had even bothered with the bear.

Keeping it in RC also would have given a nice contrast in Korra's story compared to Aang's world-traveling story.

To be fair, Pabu was probably the one perfect character that show had.

Characters I liked:

Lin (season one Lin)
Asami (I have a soft spot for her even though they didn't do enough with her.)
Tahno
Pabu (perfect lil' beastie)
Zaheer (I liked him more so in his earlier episodes but by the end of his arc, he needed to gtfo)
P'li
Tarrlok
Amon (before Amon's identity was revealed)
Amon's lieutenant
Old Man Zuko
General Iroh (but I think his voice should've been recasted)
Varrick (I don't really like this guy but as a shit-stirrer, he was at least DOING something which I can appreciate)

I really wanted more Firelord Izumi.

Everyone else was a mix of dislike, indifference, and hatred. Bolin I hated because he was so annoying. (I'd probably hate Kuvira and more characters if I watched more of the show.) The one I hate the most through is Suyin Beifong. Linking a tumblr post that does a good job regarding Suyin and why she's a shit: https://araeph.tumblr.com/post/152028334090/was-it-just-me-or-was-anyone-else-really

Compared to ATLA, I can't think of anyone I actually hated or disliked in that show at all. I'm struggling to think of someone. Like, not even the villains. They made the villains sufficiently bad but ATLA applied antagonistic force without creating annoyance.

It's fine. There's not a lot going for the anime thread. Also, I've brought up Chinese donghua like The King's Avatar and Mo Dao Zu Shi just because there's not really another place to discuss them.

I'm offended that you consider this NicToon to be actual anime.

Just kidding. A lot of things bother me in life, but cartoon classification ain't one of them.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I just refer to any of that stuff as faux anime. Like, even Boondocks. Boondocks is very clearly going for that anime aesthetic and not quite hitting the mark. Castlevania, Seis Manos, and Blood of Zeus on Netflix. Presumably that upcoming MOTU thing from Kevin Smith. Ugh. I really hope that one doesn't follow the Powerhouse Animation template but I have no reason to believe it won't.

I guess we kind of already had a faux anime He-Man from Cartoon Network in the early '00s.

Oh, and Onyx Equinox on crunchyroll is just straight up Avatar, but with added blood, guts, and nudity.

You know what? That old Spawn cartoon on HBO was very much in the same vein, come to think of it. Something about the facial movement and stilted delivery in these newer ones always gives me Spawn vibes.

God, I just remembered another Netflix faux anime gem: Cannon Busters. Filth. Just wretched.

I'm really not trying to be an anime snob, either. I firmly believe that the majority of anime is trash to begin with, so whenever someone aims to emulate anime and ends up with trash, I guess they've kind of succeeded...?

I've mostly been enjoying short-form goofball stuff lately. Kyklos, Bottleneck, Eagle Talon, Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san. That's the good shit.

I wanted to like Cannon Busters but it was awful. I thought Castlevania was also a stinker, but no where near Cannon Busters level of stinkage. I tried to watch Onyx Equinox but there was something about the presentation that put me off. I can't put my finger on it... I dunno, maybe because the driver for the story is the bet between the gods but the main character is some random slave kid. Or how the show tries to get a rise out of the viewer with the sister's sacrifice but fails to provide enough focus on the characters in ep one to provoke any emotions. It felt pretty but empty, which is most of the faux anime stuff tbh.

THIS. That soulless quality. I'm reminded of crunchyroll's God of Highschool, which is based on manhwa, so less faux anime than most, but still. Anyway, everything about that show's story, characters, visuals, etc. is so pristinely cookie-cutter, so paint-by-numbers that it boggles the mind. Like, original ideas, you ask? Look elsewhere, chum.

Same with Tower of God. Also Korean. A Korean, Japanese, and US production. It looked pretty and had characters (except for the main one) that had some level of interest to them. I stuck around for few eps but there's nothing there but "we have to win" and mc wank. Them trying to get climbing rights to the tower in the first place was the most interesting part because they were trying to accomplish something very clearly.
