Please forgive the know-it-all anime nerdness in which I'm about to engage.
Okay, so in the first episode of the original series, we join our protagonist, Guts (or Gatsu if it pleases you), already in full badass mode, hunting down a demon in a world which obviously is not as it should be. He handily vanquishes said demon, and then flashes back to his formative years. After that, the series is basically one extended flashback that plays out more like medieval fiction than fantasy, with a few deviations here and there, culminating in an event that irreversibly alters the fabric of reality. Also, pretty much everyone dies, and our hero is utterly defeated.
And that was it. No more Berserk anime. If you wanted to know what happened next, you had to track down translated manga scans. But it was well worth it.
Then a few years back they release a series of three movies which retold the events of the TV series, much like Evangelion, I think? The only problem is that all the backgrounds and crowd scenes, including the epic battles, are now rendered in CG. I thought it looked awful, and never bothered with any of these.
Now the unfortunate part. As I understand it, this new TV series is rendered entirely in CG, like, top to bottom. But I don't care, because the narrative picks up where the story left off 18 years ago, and it is going to be amazing.
