Holy crap, Erased was intense. Dude is in his late twenties trying to make it as a comic creator, but in the meantime he has a powet called revival that clues him in on a someone about to die, and it sends him back in time to do something about it. Usually to the detriment to his health. When he was a kid, there was a triple murder of kids from his school that went unsolved that haunts him. Now, when he and his mom foil a kidnapping, the kidnapper find where he lives, kills his mom, and frames him for it. Then he finds himself fired back in time further than ever before... to when he was in elementary school, and now he's trying to save his classmates.

It turned out to be predictable when it comes to the whodunit part, but it's an edge of your seat affair with a particularly major twist prior to the conclusion. And it ends perfectly.

Good show.

I liked everything up to him being in a coma or whatever all of those years.  It felt like a cheap end.  I checked out the manga and, granted, that part is more intense than the anime.   But I still didn't like it.  The tone, how everything unfolded up to that point was brilliant.  But it reminds me of how Death Note felt like it was over after L died.

I thought it was a great twist, seeing as he was all "whatever it takes" as a kid, and then--BOOM--coma! There were massive consequences, and they didn't shirk them. But everything worked out for everybody in the end, which is a big deal for my part because I hate it when you take a leap and care about what happens, and everybody gets screwed. Heck, he even met the jailbait chick again when she was legal, so even that worked out non-skeevishly.

I get what you mean.  It certainly was a twist I had never seen before.  And at least he's not Detective Conan anymore.  Unlike the actual Detective Conan... who will probably be a child forever.

I watched The World Is Still Beautiful over the past week, as well. It's about a 17 year-old princess from a backwater country who can literally sing down the rain, and she's married off to the Sun King, who is allegedly 15 but looks 12 and has apparently conquered the world and decided he needs a wife, and the fact she can make it rain in his parched nation is icing on the cake. So it's situational: she's trying to live up to her role as eventual queen and her billing as princess of rain, while he's learning how to open up to her despite living in a political climate where he's surrounded by enemies and has become paranoid as hell.

I'm usually not a romcom anime fan, but this one was enjoyable. It's not like it really did a lot out of the ordinary, but it did a lot of stuff right. It's too bad that it won't be getting a second season: it just abruptly ended, the thing was from 2014, so that's probably that. But the manga's still going on, so I may read on and see how things actually turn out.

Huh. Apparently Opera can't load those sorts of pictures...I had to run that in Chrome/Firefox to see it.

I never watched Berzerk. Always intended to.

It would be like... 18 years old now? Haven't watched it in a long time. I'll bet the animation ain't so hot anymore, if it ever was. I think it was just serviceable, even then.

I first owned the series on fansubbed VHS, and the OP and ED songs are so bizarre and non-traditional that I initially assumed the fansubbers had inserted their very own original dubbed recordings.

I tried watching The World is Still Beautiful. I remember thinking it was quite decent but it just wasn't something I was inspired to finish.

Berserk always reminds me of joe, lol. I actually never bothered watching it so maybe I'll start with this new one.

I've seen Golion but I'll be damned if I could recall much about it. It's been a few years.

Please forgive the know-it-all anime nerdness in which I'm about to engage.

Okay, so in the first episode of the original series, we join our protagonist, Guts (or Gatsu if it pleases you), already in full badass mode, hunting down a demon in a world which obviously is not as it should be. He handily vanquishes said demon, and then flashes back to his formative years. After that, the series is basically one extended flashback that plays out more like medieval fiction than fantasy, with a few deviations here and there, culminating in an event that irreversibly alters the fabric of reality. Also, pretty much everyone dies, and our hero is utterly defeated.

And that was it. No more Berserk anime. If you wanted to know what happened next, you had to track down translated manga scans. But it was well worth it.

Then a few years back they release a series of three movies which retold the events of the TV series, much like Evangelion, I think? The only problem is that all the backgrounds and crowd scenes, including the epic battles, are now rendered in CG. I thought it looked awful, and never bothered with any of these.

Now the unfortunate part. As I understand it, this new TV series is rendered entirely in CG, like, top to bottom. But I don't care, because the narrative picks up where the story left off 18 years ago, and it is going to be amazing.

They are taking a lot from the new Voltron from this. A lot of the "Why did they change the name." type stuff was because of the original GoLion. Shiro (although as Shirogane) Galra, and Aleta...all come from GoLion.

I think they learned how to better utilize it in recent years as CG isn't as crummy as it once was. It's like they realized that, hey, let's not try to hide everything behind a polygonally-rendered veneer and just use it subtly.

I knew all of that. I meant more that I couldn't go into a lot of detail about it. I remember Sincline, Shirogane's brother and whatever Nanny was called died. Hagar was Honerva, I think. I stumbled across a blog that had summaries for a lot (if not all) of the Voltron eps with the Golion summary below it. I'd throw out the link but it's on my comp and I'm posting through my phone.

First episode of new Berserk didn't knock my socks off. The CG is... ugh. I don't know. Given the current state of most hand drawn anime, maybe using 3D models and environments is the lesser of two evils? I'm torn. But again, it's Berserk, so it's not as if I'll stop watching it.

There is some hand drawn stuff in there, and it looks pretty good! But when they switch back and forth it's kind of distracting. Bah!

Assassination Classroom had one of the most satisfying endings of any anime I've ever seen. It was a fun show...not every episode was that good, but they were good enough to keep watching. The pacing was a little slow to start, but it was well-developed.

I'll miss AssClass.

And miss saying, "AssClass".

Aside from Food Wars season 2 I can't think of anything I want to pick up this summer season. Continuing Macross D and DBSuper, which is in actual uncharted territory now.

Newest OVA of Tu LOVE-Ru came out yesterday. Sure enough, it's just as trashy as ever, and gloriously so. Lala's mom comes to visit, and she's from a race of aliens so hot that they turn any and all males who look her in the face into ravenous horndogs. So, naturally, Rito accidentally does a full face-plant in her chest in a hot spring housed in a tesseract, and hilarity ensues until they realize he's not affected like everyone else because he's special, so it's all okay after the sisters beat the hell out of him. Again, totally nothing out of the ordinary for this show...it's like seeing an old friend and hearing the same sketchy jokes and laughing at them all over again.

Okay, I accept new Berserk's animation. Also, it's been so long since I read the source material that I probably won't even be able to nitpick too much. I can just enjoy the show for what it is.

Apparently ReLIFE was a good show from the previous season, so I'm pulling down a batch of that. As for this season, I'm going to sample 91 Days (gangster revenge story), Alderamin on the Sky (Madhouse production; fantasy military adventure), Orange (girl gets a letter from herself ten years later telling her to avoid things), DAYS (soccer anime that sounds like Rudy), and Amaama to Inazuma (Sweetness & Lightning: dad tries to raise his little girl after his wife dies).

So, no, not the usual fare for me. I'm sort of shocked myself, but there doesn't seem to be any good trashy harem shows this go-around.

I did find that there's one that isn't projected to be utter crap (Ange Vierge), but it's censored out the wazoo, and I didn't like the sound of the story. Yes, I actually like story with my skeevy fan-servicey anime...even if they barely develop it.

Maybe now that I'm getting older my tastes are beginning to mature. Then again I'm still watching Dragonball Super and just started watching Highschool DxD BorN, so...yeah, probably not.

Headmasters was alright generally speaking, but it was disjointed as hell. It's main attraction was the use of familiar characters and its status as a true TF season four. I found Masterforce to be better (especially after Ginrai became the main character), but Victory was pretty tedious to get through.

Watched Initial D Legend 3 -Mugen-.  Disadvantaged because I couldn't find a subtitled copy.  Or at least one with hard subs which I prefer for my purposes because I wanted to watch it on my TV.  Making one myself with an additional subtitle file results in silly, huge-ass subtitles.  If I get a file where I can add subtitles with my TV's remote, my TV displays the subtitles in teeny-tinyass font.  So there's no winning.  I just went with a raw.  Advantaged, however, because all these new Initial D movies are is a new, shiny rehash of portions of the manga already done in the old anime.  I've already seen the story, like, a hundred times.  Anyway, on this anime itself, I like the way the races are conceptualized.  I miss the eurobeat from the old anime tho'.  And it's odd how the character designs make the Takahashi brothers smoking hot and the girls super cute, but nearly all of the plain characters got fuglier.  Oh, yeah, and there appears to be a problem with how clothing is draped on characters.  It looks weird.  (Super tiny car aside.)
