Rushed in a plot sorta way.  Not in a DB Super/Sailor Moon Crystal sorta way.  Like they're just running through the story when they could've made a few more episodes to flesh it all out.

I suppose I should just accept the fact that most anime is going to look like crap these days due to budget and time constraints, but I can't. I remember when a big part of the appeal was how amazing it all looked. It's pretty sad to think that a lot of the stuff coming out today is objectively the worst-produced material in the history of Japanese animation.

Or maybe I'm just old and all the shows I've placed up on a pedestal over the years aren't nearly as immaculate as memory would suggest.
Like what?  I'm curious about what shows today are the worst-produced (I'm assuming DBS and SMC make the list) and which ones from back-when are pedestal-worthy.

I think transgressions in actual animation and even character design can be forgiven if the characters themselves (and by extension the story) salvage it somehow.  Bring some laughs.  Or bring some charm.  That was probably SMC's bigger offense than the Downs faces and zoom frames.  SMC is dull.  It was like watching cardboard.

If anything I'm more mournful of the quality drop in Western cartoons than I am in Eastern ones.

I'm watching Slam Dunk right now.  I could've sworn I heard this show was really good.  It's just okay so far.  Too bad because I like the general look of it and the designs of some of the characters.  I mean, I look at that opening sequence where these fly dudes are playing basketball and it looks fun and exciting.  Then you get into show and it's mostly slow and clumsy.  The humor really falls flat.  I love the main dude's look but his personality is shallow and inconsistent and he's actually one of the more likable characters.  The headbutts got old fast.

And now I'm posting my obligatory Ippo gif.

Whoa.

I guess everything is subjective.

I think One Piece looks awful now. To me it seems like the people in charge of animating it stopped caring a long time ago.

I mean, every now and then they might staff a key animator who actually takes pride in his work, but those sequences are probably few and far between at this point.

If you want to see what I consider to be quality animation, watch One Piece Movie 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island. So nice. Came out ten years ago and I'll bet it's still the best-looking OP movie.

I always thought One Piece looked stupid. Time hasn't softened my view. It might be the greatest story ever told but I'm not going to sit down and watch it.

Castle Town Dandelion has been a fun and cute show thus far. But I'm only three episodes in. A king is holding an election to choose the next king from among the children in his large family. Who'll win? It's just a bunch of kids in a slice of life show trying to be normal while jockeying for position...at least some are.

Started Ushio to Tora.  I've seen some people knocking the art style for being too 90's but the manga's freakin' 90's.  I love the look of it myself.  And the dude who voiced Takamura in Ippo is voicing Tora.  That guy's hilarious.  Tora also speaks to my increasing hatred of perfumes.

You know, I've never been a big fan of the million episode shows (DBZ being an exception), but the relatively recent thing where everything's 10-13 episodes sort of pisses me off. Where are the 26-episode seasons? Sure, there are a few of them: I watched Cross Ange and Food Wars over the past year, and there are usually one or two a season. I also understand the realities of the global economy enforcing a survival of the fittest within animated programming...it's a 21st century anime axiom that, if you want a second season, you'd better hope people buy a lot of overpriced discs in Nippon.

But still.

Oh, wow.  No kidding.  I didn't realize how prevalent that format is.  https://www.livechart.me/summer-2015/tv  Ushio to Tora is the only one that's 26 eps but there's 13 more eps coming in a second season to wrap it all up.  Is DB Super really gonna be 100 episodes?  That sounds painful as fuck.

Are recap episodes still a thing? Back when I was still watching, they seemed to be phasing them out. I always hated recap episodes, especially when they were one of four "new" episodes on a $30 DVD I just bought.

I understand their purpose, historically, but that shit needs to go away forever if it hasn't already.

The eye shadow palette looks very nice.  I'm conflicted on the Manic Panic hair color.  Everybody I've seen lately trying to pull off weird hair color just come off looking homeless.  Also, Manic Panic should've made a full-on hair kit with bleach and tools with cute plastic glitter handles.  Something really cool.  All they did was stick Cotton Candy and Electric Tiger Lily (hair colors already available for $14 and change) into squeeze bottles and label them Jem and Kimber.  What a rip.

Fuck yeah!

For a sec, I thought that was the Adventures of Old Lupin.  Because the hair on the hands in some shots just looks like old man hands.  And naked Fujiko is bleh.  The last Lupin things have disappointed me.  I guess I can give this one a shot.  For all we know though, they blew the budget on the OP.

Lupin is hit or miss for me. When it's good it's great, when it's bad it's really bad.

But I was right about that Castle Town Dandelion anime. It's cute with no bad characters...how rare is it to not hate anybody on an ensemble show like this? I wish it'd go on for another run, but it did a great job in its short 12 episodes, and it wrapped up really well. Just a really nice little show.

I just think that Lupin sequence looks really nice. I have no realistic expectations of the actual show looking anything like that.

Was that Fujiko Mine show not any good? I watched the first episode, and it seemed promising.

The individual episodes weren't bad, but the overarching storyline was excessively dark and heavy and not really enjoyable. I don't think dark and heavy and not really enjoyable works for Lupin shows.

I watched Expelled from Paradise last night. It wasn't a bad movie, but it really drug a lot and could have done with about thirty minutes less time. A cyber chick from a digitized human collective in low Earth orbit is sent in a cloned teenaged (naturally!) body to the Scorched Earth to find a master hacker with the help of a worldly helper agent dude. It was largely computer animated...the titty jiggle physics were pretty distracting, but the assorted action sequences at the end were nice. The story was of the Ghost in the Shell variety: what's more human, the self-realized AI with hopes and dreams, or the digitized human who's never inhabited a body of its own? And who's more free, the meat sacks on the ground scrounging for survival, or the electric elitists in the clouds subject to the dole of tyranny?

I probably won't watch it again, but I guess I can say I enjoyed it.

I'm watching Eyeshield 21.  At first, I found it sorta bland but it's kinda grown on me.  Hiruma a cool.

EDIT:  Oh man, the Panther episodes.  These are so uncomfortable.  It came off as so racist for this one dude to be on an all-white football from Houston and treated like shit by the white coach.  Turns out in the manga, the coach of that team was racist.  It was an actual story-line that the anime scrubs that out.  If you're gonna nix the racism story, at least put more black dudes on the team.  Otherwise, the racism angle still looks like its there.  Blah.  That was probably the intention though.  To get that story in under the radar.  Panther himself is awesome.  I wish he was part of a better story.

Then the main characters actually come to Texas.  Nothing looks like Texas.  It looks like Japan and they're just calling it Texas.  Well, they tried, I guess.  Also, calling black people animals.  A black guy called Panther.  A guy named Big Bear.  Yet a stuffed animal is named Michael.  And Japan, don't dress up like "Indians."  I still like the show but I'll probably not watch these episodes again.  Bleh.  Doesn't leave a good taste with me.

"We're going to the Christmas Bowl!  Waah waah."  Then after 145 episodes, the series ends way before the Christmas Bowl.  Nice.  :lmao:  I haven't finished it yet, but knowing the anime ends before we ever get to the main event made me take a look at the manga (which thankfully actually did get there).  I realize that looking at the manga, all of the "cute" characters got screwed over in the anime.  Sena, Mamori, and Suzuna look very generic and plain in the anime most of the time.  When other characters comment on Mamori's beauty, I totally didn't get it.  But in the manga she is a beauty.  Similar for Sena and Suzuna.  The way their eyes and hair are conveyed in the show messes with their looks.

Anyone watch the first ep of the new Lupin yet?  The visuals on the OP feels so cheap.  Haven't gotten through the rest of the ep myself tho'.

Watched DBZ Resurrection F. Predictable, but still fun. It was pretty lame how they beat Frieza, though.

Apparently we should be watching One Punch Man.

I haven't seen it yet myself, but the premise is that there's this man, and he defeats his enemies with one punch.

I'm gonna check it out.

I don't think perfume/cologne is really the problem, unless of course you're allergic. It's people using way more than they could ever realistically need in one go. As in, they should be using 1/100 of what they are using.

The worst is when they're using it to mask something. Sorry, that does not work, people. Consult a physician. That store-bought odor does not hide your affliction, it mingles with it.

Another example, people who bomb the bathroom with air freshener after leaving a particularly ripe deuce. If I'm in there after you, I know exactly what you did. Synthetic flower scent does not negate the stench of shit.

I've heard of OPM but I didn't know whether or not I actually felt like watching it.  The digital manga remake being drawn by Yusuke Murata is something else.  I really like his art for Eyeshield 21.

Yeah, I would throw on a bunch as a stupid kid so I expect young people to be making those types of mistakes.  But no.  At my job are a bunch of people around my age or older doing this shit.  And it mingles with their sweat.  This one guy at work made me so sick I was crying.  Not because I was sad or distressed, but my eyes were trying to get rid of the film sticking to them.

It does for me but only if it's my own crap stench.   And it has to be a stench with a Yamcha-type powet level.  I used half the can on my aunt's Genki Dama and no dice.  I had to put a fan in there and air the room out.
