In this instance, isn't the "it" implied? I'm sure there's a grammatical term for what I'm talking about, but don't expect me to come up with it.

I think the 2nd "It" could be implied...but not the first. Because you have to establish the "it" before it can be implied. Even then, though, I still don't think it would work. I mean it might be technically correct, but it would still read strange and would just be easier to put the "It" in there.

Yeah but if you got rid of the second "it" as well, the meaning would still be understood because you retained the verb.
