Depends. Sakakibara Yoshiko as Integra in Hellsing didn't have the same effect on me as Victoria Harwood, partly because Nakata Joji was just too damn basso profundo as Alucard.

Yay for Faye! I agree. There's nothing like original actors. To me, it doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed in other languages or even enjoyed more so, but with original actors, I feel like I'm getting more of the original product and thus the original intent. The idea that you can just layer one language on top of another and get an identical product fails to make sense to me, unless possibly you actually have the actors redubbing themselves. When I watch things in other languages, I do so because I want a different experience with the same movie.

Disney does get points for trying their damndest though. So far, the only one shown on Turner that I consider a bit of a miss is Laputa. There were too many people that weren't working. Even Mark Hamill couldn't save it for me.

This is perfectly understandeable. As I said I always prefer subbed to dubbed. That being said you aren't offended they are butchering art. You are in disbelief at a totally believeable thing.

I think if the original director is there supervising the dubbing process then virtually nothing is lost. The original actors brought their own flavor to the characters but other actors can come in and bring theirs as well. Just like a play can be performed by people other than the orginal cast.

Kirby Morrow said it best, though. The Dub VA will never be as good as the original, because the animation is based on the original's manerism's and style, and the Dub actor has to do his best to keep up.

That isn't neccesarily true. It is an actors job to learn mannerisms and styles and duplicate them. That's what they do. That's who they are. Just because the artists gave a talking cat a nervous tick cause the actor has one doesn't mean a dub actor can't put his own take on that and have it be just as good if not better...but really the only thing we can determine is that it's different..

Non japanese speakers that somehow think they can determine which version is better is kind of laughable. Even if we spoke japanese we haven't been enculturated in japan. Do you really know what every voice inflection means when they change tone? No, you're just assigning meaning to it based on our culture. Someone would have to be fluent in both languages and cultural philoligy to truly make an empirical critical call on who did the best job.

Not that English speakers are necessarily perfect at picking up the cultural subtext in foreign inflections, but how else do you understand someone who doesn't speak English except for inflection? If all you have is a voice to go by, you can tell when they're angry, sad, happy, etc. In the most basic emotions, there is no great subtlety there.

There is no subteltly in the basic"emotions but perhaps something is lost on the finer points in complex situations. We can only grasp the basics by inflection and then like you say were only getting the base emotion. Some of the cues that we take for granted may or not mean the exact same thing and we assign meaning to the ones we're not sure of (but we think we are) based on our culture....which I would argue pollutes the perception of the content.

Holy shit. That Pom Poko was something else. It had Tress MacNeille, again, and this time in a larger role =\, but she had comedic parts so it wasn't as grating as when she was the old woman in Nausicaa or various female roles in Mononoke and Laputa. Merla actually sat down and watched this one with me. So I'm all "Goddammit, it's Tress MacNeille!", and she's "HOW can you tell?"

Maurice LaMarche as the narrator also worked and Jeff Bennett as one of the terrified workers... damn, those two are awesome. They could be chewing food and I'd still think they're brilliant. Clancy Brown was pretty darn cool, too... and Jonathan Taylor Thomas... is still Jonathan Taylor Thomas. It's kinda insulting with all the other great voices, that Oliva D'abo got a high billing on the Dish info thingy (second or third or something). We saw her dumb character like once.

I haven't gotten to see the sub yet, but I recorded it. And I didn't get to Only Yesterday yet either.

You don't have a VCR?

Here's my ranking of what was shown. I was going to include dubs and subs seperately, but to tell you the truth, I don't have the time the spend watching both, and only watched the sub when I deemed the dub too inferior for enjoyment.

Whisper of the Heart -- A very sweet movie.
Only Yesterday -- I'm still in progress of watching it, but there's something I really like about it.
Pom Poko -- I will never forget this movie as long as I live.
Princess Mononoke -- My first Miyazaki movie. Minnie Driver's accent is hotness.
Porco Rosso -- The planes and setting were neat, the characters were incredibly memorable, but the ending felt rushed and unsatisfying. And the middle kinda dragged.
Nausicaa -- Very cool. It reminded me of a video game.
Laputa -- A nice adventure, maybe I'dve appreciated it better in the 80's. Now it just feels overdone.
Spirited Away -- It won an Oscar and it's a cute movie, but it's nothing I'd pay to see again.
My Neighbor Totoro -- I was bored. Sorry.

I really wish they would show animated films every Thursday. I'm still pissed off that I erased Whisper of the Heart without watching the Lasseter/Mancewicz interview first.

I also think it's interesting that the ones I liked the best weren't necessarily Miyazaki films.

I have a vcr but I don't know how to set the timer to start recording at a later time. And I find the blinking 12:00 very comforting especially in times of need like a couple nights ago.

RACOONS??? MOTHER FUCKING RACOONS?

Spirited Away -- Already seen, not bad.
Princess Mononoke -- My first Miazaki movie too. And one of my favorites.
Nausicaa -- Already seen, but still a favorite.
Laputa -- I had never seen this until now, and I actually enjoyed this a lot.
My Neighbor Totoro -- Already seen, didn't watch. Too kiddyish.
Porco Rosso -- I mentioned before I saw this, and it's not bad, but the ending left some things to be desired.
Whisper of the Heart -- I didn't watch this much. Didn't have enough airships and flying craft, or magic, or magical fantasy lands, or crazed people trying to take over the world, like all of Miazaki's good films.
Only Yesterday -- Didn't watch this much either.
Pom Poko -- A furry's favorite movie. But it was pretty good. But fuck "racoons"!!

They needed to play Kiki, Grave of the Fireflies, and the Cat Returns, even though the latter isn't Miazaki's.

If you didn't watch them simply due to the lack of fantasy elements, you really missed out.

I really don't see why they couldn't have just been called tanuki, but it's not like the movie really suffers because of it. How many English speaking people watched that and said, "raccoon? teh fuck? that ain't no fucking raccoon!" It's not like they were referred to as "raccoon dog" once. At least the viewer could've googled "tanuki". And that line about that one tanuki's nuts being his "raccoon pouch" was such a cop-out.
