Every Thursday this month is 2 new movies.

Today they showed Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. They show the English dubs first, then the second time around they show the Japanese version w/ English subtitles. Neat.

I watched Spirited Away subbed and some of Princess Mononoke subbed.

Drat, I forgot they were doing this. Thanks for the reminder.

I have Mononoke on DVD, but I didn't think Spirited Away would appeal to me, and now I can find out without laying down the bucks.

I've gotten to the point, however, that I don't watch subbed anime any more unless I have to. It isn't high art in my mind, so for casual viewing dubs are acceptable. And listening to the Japanese tracks is annoying if for no other reason than the language itself...they speak like chihuahuas on speed.

I've seen almost everything ghibli has put out (at least everything that interests me) but I wouldn't mind catching the dubbed version of Naussica, since all I have is a the subbed VHS.

Spirited away is great IMO, I didn't like the plot towards the end but it definitely gives you the feeling of being in japanese spirit/fairy land. If you dig that sort of thing...which i do.

Had this marked on my calender since November, since I knew I would forget. I've seen both Spirited Away and Mononoke dubbed already, both in theaters, so yesterday I was really in it for the subs. (Though Minnie Driver's voice is hot, Claire Danes and Billy Crudup always bothered me... as well as any bit parts by Tress Macneille.) Next week I'll be recording overtime, as I've seen neither of those and really want to watch 'em in both languages.

I guess you missed Spirited Away on TCM, then, since the showtimes are for EST time and thus if you are in PST you must watch at the same time EST people are watching it, and I made this topic after I saw Spirited Away.

Unless they rerun Spirited Away again.

I gotta say, though, I liked the Japanese version better. The girl isn't as annoying as the English one and her voice is less harsh, I thought. Also, in the English version they added some extra lines to explain things, but they ended up screwing up the story a bit. The English version changed this one part that was rather crucial to this story point at the end, so when I watched the English one in theaters(first time seeing the movie) I thought, "What the hell? That was really random. They hardly tried to make any hint at that at all and now they just brought it up out of the blue?"

I liked Spirited Away in that it had more variety and fun stuff than Princess Mononoke.

Disaaaaaamn... I wish I had this channel... though... I do have the DVDs for most of those.

Are they playing dubbed Totoro or the Fox version or what?/

Last September they had a Miyazaki thing at an animation festival here in Ottawa. It unfortunately coincided with a weekend trip to montreal to go see strippers but I still managed to catch a few in theatres which was a unique treat.

Disney does not have the rights to Totoro yet but I heard they may get it at some point when fox loses them so if there's a Disney dub out there it can't be released yet.

But it's already been dubbed. That's pretty much the only version of it available through legal matters in my country or yours.

Anyway I'd be all over that like stink... this isn't the old TNT is it?

Looks like the Disney Totoro DVD is finally coming out on March 7th, same date as we are finally getting the Howl's Moving Castle DVD.

I disagree. The whole point of dubbing the movies is to get them out there to people who normally wouldn't watch those types of movies or wouldn't watch a foreign film at all. After they've been introduced to the film in English, one can only hope that they would want to hear the film in its original language so they can further appreciate it. At the very least however, thank god Disney at least gets good voice actors...

Well if a dub bothers you then just don't watch it. That's the advantage of the new DVD that will have both.

I've always personally prefered subs over dubs but since my fiancee watches dubs I am glad for them which means I can watch something dubbed with her instead of not at all.

Also the Miyazaki dubs by Disney have all been top notch and quite respectfull and failthfull so I wouldn't worry about Totoro too much.

I don't understand why most people bitch about dubs, yet treat voice actors like Gods at anime conventions...
