A local theatre here is doing an Afternoon of Anime next Saturday. The only reservation that have about it is that it's going to be very much geared to popular fangirlism, so there will be loud squeeling every time [inert bishie here] comes on screen. -_-

Scott McNeil is cool!

I don't just like him from dubbed anime though. I like him as Rattrap and Dinobot for example. But yeah... he, for example, is in anime which plays on TV. I don't watch InuYasha subbed because I'm not willing to go buy the DVDs for it.

When presented with a choice I will go for a sub over a dub but that doesn't mean I won't watch a dub if it's easily accessible to me and the sub isn't.

I turned off the dub of Nausicaa last night. The first dub attempt (Warriors of the Wind) was cut up and they changed names (Princess Zandra?), but I liked Nausicaa's VA a lot better. Alison Lohman sounded like she was reading a stock report. I made it through her incessant babbling at the ohmu shell and set a tape for the sub later on.

I sat through just fine in the Nausicaa dub and watched some of the sub (but not all of it due to sheer time constraints). That may be one I'll actually buy in the future, depending on whether or not I can piece together the end (or feel like putting the effort into doing so) since my DVR chopped into the ending when it was recording Laputa (both times!). The Laputa dub really bothered me though. I kinda watched that subbed, and can't say I was that interested in it as I hit the forward button many a time. The characters were nice and all, but the story.... I guess in '86, it would've been pure magic. Now it just feels like other things I've seen too many times. The old bat and her pirate fiends were cooler than I initially thought though.

I've been happy with all the Miyazaki dubs and their performances. Only people who pissed me off were Jada Pinket and Billy Bob in Mononke. But Kiki's, Laputa, Nausicaa, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle were all solid. Remains to be seen what I'll think of Totoro though...

Neither can 1993...

Were you aware there's an old Spanish dub as well? I really can't wrap my mind around you being shocked and I don't just mean because it was dubbed and widely available 13 years ago but also 'cause there's no precedence for a movie bineg "too good" to be dubbed. Just like any book of fame and quality has always been translated into a number of languages.

who the fuck cares in which language they dubbed it! the thing is that they did and i think they shouldn't have. they could have just put subtitles on it. you can't compare movies with books. you can't put subtitles in books.

Then I'll compare movies to movies. The movies which get a sub only release are few and far between and that only happens when it's simply unprofiteable to dub something.

Film is not a written word media. You weren't meant to be reading while experiencing a movie (unless the script calls for subtitiles beacuse a character is speaking a different language and even then they don't do it sometimes, like in the godfather). Then in the case of anime you factor in that japanese and english don't exactly translate back and forth very well. Someone is taking the meaning of the scene and writing the words that make it meaningful to english speakers. Why not just do the same thing with english voice actors? If you don't speak japanese listening to it is on par with listening to dogs of various sizes barking at one another.

Dub the anime...Dub it all.

Really? I thought they were actually passable. Tress MacNeille is really getting on my nerves though. Maybe because I'm so used to her as a comedic talent, like in Futurama, The Simpsons, Animaniacs, etc. that in any other context she seriously bothers me and detracts any depth from whatever scenes she is. In Nausicaa she actually had some serious lines, and I kept wanting to laugh during some of them because I expected a punchline somewhere.

James Van Der Beek as Pazu was killing me. And Cloris Leachman's voicing felt souless to me. I had kept Laputa (the dub) on my DVR and tried watching it again, but I just couldn't get through it.

Yeah, but somewhere out there someone wrote those words down. =P I like to do both. If it has subtitles or captions, half the time I'll slap them on there while I'm watching (unless they're shitty or something).

He's started to pop-up in various cartoons and animes. I can't name anything off the top of my head other than the Penguin on The Batman.

when you dub it , it loses originality. ive never seen a movie that sounds good dubbed. there's nothing like the real voices of the actors.

Yeah, alot of studios (Disney especially) do a great job of getting actors who sound just like their Japanese counterparts.
