James Cameron's finally getting this one scratched off his bucket list. Robert Rodriguez is directing.

I dunno, on one hand, I'm getting sick of these Americanized/Westernized anime remakes. On the other, this actually looks a tiny bit interesting. Like something I could enjoy with a burger over at Alamo Drafthouse and not leave the theater feeling like I wasted two hours of my life.

The eyes... were really a daring move. While people are hating on the look, it captures the essence of Alita being a unnatural-looking doll. I kinda get what they're going for in that you don't see her as being human like you would if they just played it cheap and used the actress as she actually looks. In terms of marketing, people are not going to easily forget "the big eyes" movie. But there's a lot of YouTube comments with folks genuinely creeped out by them. So if this fails, it'll have the distinction of being the first multi-million dollar feature tanking due to "dem peepers."

The eyes are just too distracting. Alita never stood apart as "alien" in the manga, I don't know why they chose to do it this way.

Wait... is this actually a sequel to Tim Burton's "Big Eyes"? Christoph Waltz was in that, too!

Her looks are very uncanny-valley-esque and I don't like it at all. Like that Polar Express movie.

I was reading (somewhere, don't recall the page) that they did it this way because the viewer isn't supposed it immediately identify with Alita as if she were human. You're supposed to see her as a weird animate doll, kinda like Pinocchio. That makes sense and the movie would really have to work to get the viewer to accept her as human. That's really neat.

I mean, the thought itself is above the mentality of the average movie goer so it'll probably cost this movie millions in revenue. And I'm not trying to insult anyone here because I didn't consider that angle myself until I actually read the intent. The eyes are still hella creepy. But the idea behind it is still neat.

Okay, but the CG face just really bugs the hell out of me. Maybe if her head was a Muppet... or Claymation... or Supermarionation...

I feel like there's no good solution here.

In other words, the idea is that the movie has be good enough to make one overcome the immediate response to Alita's look. It's very meta, and I like the idea of filmmakers holding their work up to such a high standard.

But I very seriously doubt that it went beyond, "hey, let's Serkis this thing to hell and back!"

Hypocritically, the closer we get to release, the more I want to see this. All the footage they've been showing in the promotional material makes it seem very authentic to the original work, and that's probably more important than anything.

Truth be told, all I really wanted was for them to include the roller derby, and it looks like that shit is totally in there.

It seems like it'll be decent. The guy playing the love interest seems a little dull. He cleans up in pictures so it just makes it appear like they frumped him up.

I still haven't watched it. Probably because I've never been the biggest GitS fan...though I will say that I was head over heels for GitS:SAC season 1.

Ha, there's that, too. For me, the first graphic novel, the first movie, and SAC Season 1. Everything else has been a mixed bag.

The first movie was iconic and was one of my anime gateway drugs, but it always struck me as overly pretentious. As opposed to GitS2, which was nothing but palpable pretension with a negative quantity of substance.

The first movie I remember being visually arresting back in the day, but I never developed any particular fondness for it. Like, it wasn't something I would revisit or push on other people.

The second movie was like one of those needless direct-to-VHS sequels Disney used to crap out.

If I'm being perfectly honest, all of SAC kind of blends together in my memory. I just remember liking it for the most part. What was the problem with the second season?

It wasn't bad, but if I remember correctly it just sort of drug along and was unremarkable. Probably why I don't remember it very well. I might have to back-to-back those two seasons soon, particularly since I'm not looking at much this season in the way of the Japanimations. That, and I found an HD version of the first season that I've not watched yet.

I didn't think the GITS movie was bad. In fact it was better then it had a right to be, but it was nothing so amazing that it could overcome the fact they had ScarJo in the main role.

As for the rest GITS. Stand Alone Complex is a my favorite thing out of there. I liked the first movie, but hated the ending. Never read the manga.
