I just remembered the other problem I had with FF7: Cloud is just not likeable. (Same problemo I had with Squall in FF8. God, that guy was an asshat. I got 3 discs in and had no motivation to finish.) I can see how he would've appealed to the edgy 90s kiddos, you know, "nothing personnel" and shit. But it's annoying. It doesn't help that there's other characters like Barrett who aren't much better. I mean, it appears the chicks are all nice. Too bad Tifa wasn't the lead character.

And Sephiroth or however you spell that is creepy. Not in a cool or sexy way. He sorta has a "angry child-face." What he's looked like in previous art translated better, me thinks. And for the record, never liked him any better than Cloud. But Cloud's the protag so Cloud doesn't get a pass. Does Cloud ever get better as a person?

Got an xbox for quarantine. Been playing whatever's on gamepass. Working through the new Wolfenstein games currently. For the most part they're good but I question whether I actually enjoy them when I'm not playing them. Also, I play everything on easy difficulty now because I'm an old man who's lost his touch.

I'm in it for the experience not the challenge. As banging my head against the wall is no longer a necessary part of the experience, why bother?

Some games I don't mind the difficulty, but I think with the newer FPS games the big issue I can't tell what the fuck is going on because the details blur together too much in some places. And their always so fucking dark. I miss the colorful cheery FPSes of yesteryear. But then some games I just won't even touch (Souls-likes).

Having watched some more Animal Crossing vids and learning more about the game, I'm actually kinda interested in playing it now but of course no Switches to be found unless I wanna buy from a scalper. (And, no, I don't want a Switch Lite.) I don't know if it's a mixed blessing though since I should be more productive on other things instead of playing games. Depending on what availability evolves to this summer with the supposed jump in Switch production, I may buy one if they become readily available again. If they still remain too hard to procure at their normal price point tho', fuck it.

I keep thinking about going back to Animal Crossing, especially now with the added swimming stuff, the art, they keep adding stuff. But I paid off my loans and kind of lost interest at that point, and the fact that the wife and I had to share an island is so fucking obnoxious (only one island per console, regardless of the number of players using the console).

Got an Xbox One, played through some FPSes, had fun, but now I'm pretty much just playing Cities Skylines. I don't like any of the other city-builders currently available on the platform. It's making me want to work on a gaming PC to try some others but I'm not sure when I'll have the money for something decent in that domain. Oh well, I'll keep doing Cities Skylines until I bore of it, I guess.

Still anxiously waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong. I saw Xbox One is putting up some demos for a week later this month and I'm hoping it will be in the lineup but I'm also not going to hold my breath. It has been at game shows in the past year already as a playable demo, but that's a very different environment to playing demos at home.

I just started Super Mario Brothers 3 on Switch this week. I'm up to world 6. I'm just easing my way through every level. It's still one of the greatest platformers of all time.

Man, I've been playing that Genshin Impact. It's kind of a problem for me right now.

Wouldn't mind one of those new consoles, but I can't imagine I'll get my hands on one until sometime next year. I'm not jumping through fiery hoops to get one, either. Fuck that.

Suppose I'll need to start thinking about a 4K, too. Ugh.

I dropped my Nintendo online subscription as I don't fool with it enough...I'd decided that the Switch is going to my niece for Christmas. I use my XBox One S for playing 4K DVDs exclusively. I've only turned on my PS4 for the past six months to use the Youtube and Plex apps since my TV started acting nutty. Now that I've resolved that it probably won't be turned on again for quite some time. I'd gotten halfway through FFVII Remake, but I put it down for a few weeks and don't want to be bothered learning how to play it again. You'd think I'd have been burning all of them up for the past two and a half weeks that I've been stuck at home, but that hasn't been the case. Any time I want to game I either play Fowlst on the phone or run RetroArch on the PC to play a few levels of SMB or 1943 on a NES emulator.

I can't rationally justify getting a PS5 aside from replacing the PS4 and XBox wholesale, as it's likely to run Plex direct play better than the PS4 and has the 4K DVD capability. I doubt I'd get that much for either, but it'd make the PS5 less of a blow to the pocketbook even if I just forked them over to GameStop. Or I could get another nVidia Shield for the living room and build a new PC (my current one is from 2013)...then I could stream games to the living room when I want something meaty, and just emulate everything up to PS3 on the computer. It'd cost (way) more, but a computer's far more useful to me than a game console...the only compelling reason for me to have a PS5 is for God of War Ragnarok. But everything may change once fiber internet finally gets here in 3-4 years.

Xbox Gamepass got all these EA games so I'm playing Mass Effect Andromeda. It's better than I was led to believe by critics when it came out. I didn't have a way to play it at that time or I would have already known that. Annoying bugs aside (I've fallen through a few floors, weird visual stuff, annoying repeated triggered dialogue). It does feel a bit too Ubisoft-open-world for my liking but I'm at least intrigued enough by the story so far to keep going.

Surviving Mars had most of my attention before jumping into ME:A. I'm sure I'll get back to it.

Playing a lot of Rocket League since it's FTP now. It's fun enough for a few matches a day before someone shows me how they're playing a spaceship simulator while I'm driving around on the ground like a doofus.

Now that Xbox Series S/X have turned out to be emulation beasts, combined with its ingrown ability to play every worthwhile thing that's been published on a Microsoft console over the past 20 years, I'm starting to think that might not be such a ridiculous idea to get one. Too bad Sony doesn't publish cross-platform, or that'd be the end-all be-all gaming machine as far as I'm concerned.

I still find it absolutely ridiculous that we still have proprietary consoles as well as first- and third-party exclusives in this day and age. If it hadn't been for the consistent cash cow of online subscriptions we'd have probably wound up there along with with swappable upgrade modules every couple years. But no, we're still stuck in the razor blade business model and now forever will be. GD-nonphysical media-ITA.

XSX does seem worth it (and I say that just having bought my X1X in the Spring) but these scalpers are ridiculous. The fact that they don't have enough stock is ridiculous. It's all ridiculous.

I don't buy consoles until the first revisions arrive at the earliest. By that time the good games are coming out, too, and you skip all that buying frenzy/price gouging hoopla.

I can't see any good reason to buy the XSX or PS5 until at least next summer based on games I'm interested in, probably not until next winter even.

Currently playing Monster Train. Neat-o single-player rogue-like card game where you help the denizens of hell relight the fire at the heart of the realm while angels try to stop you. I've heard Slay the Spire is a similar sort of game but I haven't tried that one yet. I worry that there isn't enough content to keep me coming back after I've unlocked all the "champions" but there's some stuff you can do with difficulty scaling that could keep it interesting.

Watched a bunch of the speed runs from AGDQ and the Jedi Fallen Order run is so broken. They start out jumping in ways that should be impossible and end up with flutter-flying jedi at the end. Almost makes me want to play the game again to see if I can pull any of the tricks off but probably won't.

Just bought Call of Duty Modern Warfare for PS4. Yeah, I know I'm late to the game, but I'd like to try a squad game in single player as internet woes preclude multiplayer. If it's something I can jump into and jump out of with relative read it'll be worth it.

No hurry though, eh?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare fills me with righteous indignation...no, wait...no, it's irrationalfury, all right! I paid sixty bucks for a game, and all I got was a license to download a game. And what a download: 70 gigabytes? WTCHOP?! It took two days to pull down 2GB, and that meant no internet usage over the entirety of the weekend. So assuming the download doesn't break and have to start over (it always does), that puts me at next month with no bandwidth to do anything else in the meantime. FTS! I'm going to get some shrink wrap, seal it up, and take this bitch back to the Best Buy.

Holy shit, dude. Your internet. I was starting to feel left behind with my DSL, but 2GB in 48 hours is like... GOD DAMN.

Are there no high speed options in your area at all? Like, not even satellite or something?

There's satellite, but it's really high and really unreliable and really laggy which means it's completely worthless for online gaming (minor gripe) and wifi cell calling (deal breaker). I live 25 miles from the nearest cable system. AT&T is supposed to be implementing fixed wireless which is basically a millimeter-wave radio on their cell towers that delivers a minimum of 10Mbps, but they're taking their sweet-ass time, and the nearest tower is 8 miles away, anyway.

Our rural electric cooperative is currently rolling out broadband internet in our service area (they're stringing fiber optics over their powet lines...gigabit internet, baby!), but my immediate area is scheduled under phase 5. They're half-way through phase 1, and the subsequent phases will take 8 months to a year each to implement. So the PS6 will be around the corner before it's available.

Oh shit I loved that game! How much is it? Do they have Super Mario world too?
It was free with an online subscription which is only 20 bucks a year. If I played my Switch more often it'd be totally worth it. And, yes, SMW is there, too...Here's a list of what's on there.

No, it comes with the sub. It's all cloud-based. Ultimately the only thing I used the Switch for was playing old games, and I've been playing them on computers for over twenty years for nothing, so I cancelled my sub.

Playing and enjoying Monster Train for awhile I decided to try Slay the Spire. I'm enjoying it but I prefer Monster Train. Having the extra decision of where to put your monsters on the train is significant and MT has a lot less trap cards than StS. Oh well, I'm still at least going to get everything unlocked.

I keep wanting to try Titanfall 2 or Battlefront 2 again, I started both of them and gave up on them shortly after. I should like these games but just didn't get hooked for some reason.

I'm playing Fire Emblem Sacred Stones after watching a draft race (four people speed running it but each person using specific characters).  Like, I'm not speedrunning it or anything but I am trying to pick specific people to use so that I don't spread out experience points too thin.  Don't know if I'll actually finish it but it's fun so far.

I finished Elden Ring, now I'm playing Tunic.

Probably go back to ER at some point, but for now, taking a break.
