So there are downsides.

And it depends largely on the conversion process itself and the quality of the original materials being mastered. I've got a lot of newer movies on BR, but I have not yet watched one that looks more awesome than The Ten Commandments. But I confess to not having taken the three-and-a-half some-odd hours to break out that collector edition of Ben-Hur yet....

Man, we've gone pretty far off the rails this time.

I saw Dream House a few weeks back. Maybe I already posted about that. Anyway, it was dumb.

On the weekend I went to The Thing and Real Steel. The Thing wasn't bad, but CG gore is worthless. I think there may have been some of the good old fashioned stuff as well, but mostly I just noticed the lackluster CG. Real Steel was actually pretty good, despite how nauseating the ads made it look. The runtime of just over two hours might have been a little much. Condense that shit. 90 minutes is the sweet spot, never forget.

True, but I don't see any other major change happening with resolution while we're still in the 2D world. 1920x1080 is really at the top of what the human eye can really appreciate. DVD was outdated when it hit the shelves. Not that people had TVs that could do better, but the technology was out there, and theatres just looked better. A movie will look better on film than in HD, yes, but it's not a big enough difference that you could really see it, especially on a TV. I mean even with a 60" TV, do you really think a human could see the difference between 1920x1080 and say some theoretical doubling of that, around 3840x2160? I'd be surprised if most people could...

That being said, aside from the non resolution native to film, stuff like digital video does have advantages like better in low light situations, better colour dept/contrast and such. I don't think we have to worry about how bad Cloverfield will look compared to Indiana Jones in 100 years. I think it will still look better.

I remember way back when they first started talking about theaters installing digital projectors, I thought, "Oh, that's cool," and I just assumed the theater I frequent had them.

But in the past year or so I'm noticing most new movies I go to have (DIGITAL) after the title, and the picture is just so fucking crisp and clean, I can scarcely believe it.

Also, all our auditoriums now have widely spaced, reclining leather seats, which is glorious, although completely unrelated to picture quality.

I'm assuming you have SilverCity locations in Ontario and know what I'm talking aboot.

90 minutes is the length of a television special. Anything less than two hours in the theater seems like a waste to me. Of course, if it sucks, 90 seconds is too long....

Yes I have a Silver City in town, and a pre-Silver City Colloseum which is of a similar quality. I'm mixed on digital projection.

The first movie I saw was St*r WarzzZZ in digital. The picture was crisp and colours were very clear, but I felt like if I looked really close I could see the pixels. This makes we wonder if that's just the same source they use for the film stuff and that I just don't see them because it's not as crisp. Not sure.

Recently I went to my local kind of cheap but walking distance theatre to see a non special effectsy movie and it was clearly a digital showing. I think it was not as nice because I noticed that it was digital, though again hard to get a frame of reference. It was mostly just obvious for landscapes and shots of the sky for some reason. I felt like maybe they were just doing it for this movie because it wasn't super popular and people wouldn't care but I don't really know.

Anyway with film there's little dust, scratches and the picture sometimes shakes a little, which I'm happy not to have.

I watched the The Troll Hunter. Since it was a decent movie from Scandanavia with a great idea, of course the US is going to remake it. Christ.

At least unlike the Swedish films Girl w/ the Dragon Tattoo and Let The Right One In, The Troll Hunter does have room for improvement. I hope they don't add more gore or some stupid shit like that and maybe do an extra troll scene and some more dialogue to add to the mythos, since learning shit about the trolls was pretty awesome.

I kinda like the found footage angle: "...and these bitches were never found." As pretty as the landscape was though, I'd like far fewer of those shots. They could still keep it in Norway similar to how the English-lang Dragon Tattoo movie was keeping shit in Sweden. I agree that I don't think the trolls could be relocated. Har har, maybe in Canada, eh? And instead of Hans, they'll have joe.

The Three Musketeers. In case you hadn't already heard, this movie is fucking terrible to the point of hilarity, and they even had the gall to end it with a setup for a sequel.

Seriously, not even IDE could have saved this turd.

Puss in Boots. I liked it. The plot was not at all what I expected, but that's okay. Easily better than all the Shrek sequels.

I'd buy it. I've never even seen anything north of Quebec city. I'm sure there are vast expanses of the North West that have never had a human set foot on them.

You're watching and you're thinking...hey this ain't so bad and then the final show down comes and you're like wtf.

I've had more epic show downs in my personal life where I've burst forth from an SUV, roared into the night, and turned the tide of battle with my band of adventurers (i.e. drunk frat boys) than the crap that was the end of this movie.
