Yeah I'd say you would. I mean they try to give you some of the back story to it all, but it is really just easier to understand if you see Tron. Which I really liked Tron, so I'd suggest seeing it anyway.

There is a new animated batman movie. I liked it. It started kinda slow but it delivered in the end. It's more about Gordon than batman.

A dvd rip is offensive to your eyes?

GE has a 500GB disc technology that will very likely never see the light of mass-market day thanks to fucking streaming. So Blu-Ray's probably the best you'll see until 1440p becomes common in about thirty years.

I remember dvd being a lot better than VHS but I don't really think that bluray is that much better than dvd.

Doesn't it depend on how good the quality was in the first place? Like a shitty master of something will just be grainy on Bluray? But as to how that transfers to dls and streams, I don't really know either.

This depends greatly on the production of the bluray disc. Some of them are at or below DVD standards, but they can sell them for a higher price because "OH LOOK SHINY BLUE BOX!" A good production bluray should beat the DVD everytime.

I've got both the DVD version of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and the BluRay...there is a huge difference between the two. But unless they have the original masters to make the HD transfer then it won't do it much good.

Just tonight I've seen "Horror of Dracula", "House On Haunted Hill (1959)", "The Tingler", "House of Wax." and "Curse of the Demon". All in one really long sitting. Man, I love Halloween.

Whatever happened to the guy who wrote and directed that movie? He should be the one directing the new Superman movie or better yet working on something with Marvel Studios.

Oh I bought the DVD years and years ago...when I first got the BluRay I was looking for some cheap disks to buy to try it out and I found that one for a like 8 bucks, so I bought it cause I liked the movie so much. I had planned on selling off or trading in the old DVD one but just haven't got around to it.

At least I didn't buy them both, new, shrink wrapped together like I've seen at Wal-Mart a few times. I don't get that. If you are going to buy the BluRay, you are either upgrading from the DVD, or don't own the movie at all. Why the fuck would you want to buy both at the same time?

I mean high def makes a difference when watching live sports but I don't remember seeing that big of a difference between dvd and bluray, certainly not big enough of a difference to the point where I would be like "nope! waiting for der burrdurrrrrr!"

Look, say you have two digital cameras. One takes pictures at a resolution of 704x480. The other takes pictures at a resolution of 1920x1080. Which camera will yield the better pictures? It's obvious.

Now apply that same principal to video. That's the difference between DVD and Blu-ray, and the difference is astounding.

You say you can appreciate HD sports. Guess what? HD broadcasts top out at 1280x720, well below the Blu-ray standard.

When it comes to visual clarity, Blu-ray reigns supreme. This is not an opinion, it is a fact.

Depends on the standard. DVD was about a cleaner picture, but ultimately at the same resolution as VHS. Blu-Ray is really just a much higher resolution.

I bevelie statements like this are largely false. While some Blu-Rays look better than others, I've never seen one that looks worse than a DVD. I think people just watch too many Blu-Rays and see a bad one and forget what DVD looks like. Similar completely untrue statements include "Old movies don't look better on Blu-Ray".

There is one case where this makes sense to me: Kids. If it's a movie your kids will watch, let them get their grubby hands on the DVD, and keep the bluray hidden in a special place so that when the whole family watches it will be even better. This is still not really a good excuse.

Yeah for kids movies there are lots of reasons. A second TV a self respecting person wouldn't watch their movie on, grubby hands, watching movies in the car or whatever. I'm glad for companies that do the combo pack thing.

For adults, other than going to a friend's place or lending a movie out, not much benefit. My wife is weird and likes watching movies on her computer so that's good I guess.

Exactly. As long as the original masters are preserved, old (pre-digital) movies will always look good, regardless of the current technology, because they were shot using analog film.

Which makes me wonder... now that a lot of new movies are being shot digitally, what resolution are they shooting at?

Won't there come a day when the standard outstrips the current one, and "old" (digital) movies actually won't look as good anymore?

Or am I thinking about it the wrong way?

For example, it says that Knowing, District 9, and The Social Network were digitally shot in 4K. So, assuming technology will continue to improve, perhaps one day movies will be shot in 8K. Doesn't that leave everything that came before it in the dust? If something is shot at a maximum resolution, and resolutions keep going up, won't that previous max resolution eventually become obsolete?
