Saw Star Trek yesterday and enjoyed it. I was surprised at how closely the main cast mirrored their TOS forebears in the little mannerisms. It didn't hurt that they all resembled them fairly closely, to boot.

Because someone wrote themselves into a corner. That's why. They knew they needed to get Kirk here so he could do this, but didn't know how and made up something on the fly. It was the only part of the movie that I didn't like.

I saw it, too. I thought there were a lot of sucky parts. Kirk was just a plain d-bag that got everything handed to him and earned nothing. Pike promoted him for sneaking on a ship, having his daddy die, blatantly cheating and not giving a shit, and getting beaten up by four other cadets because he was sexually harassing another one? FTW. There was no point to having the woman give birth to him in the midst of an attack, no point to the early childhood scenes for Kirk and Spock, Vulcans were acting more human than Spock was, Chekov somehow fucks up the name "Victor" but gets "Vulcan" right afterwards which was just odd, Romulans did not look like Romulans to either me or Merla, Kirk had to prove Spock was emotionally unfit by acting totally emotionally unfit himself... Kirk landing on Hoth was also stupid. The Uhura character reminded me too much of a grating know-it-all and, if it's not obvious enough, I couldn't stand Kirk. Young Shatner had charm, this guy reminds me of a dirty frat boy channeling professional d-bag Travis Stork. Bleh. I did like nearly everybody else. I didn't care for them giving Scotty a pet Ewok with a skin condition, but I consider that minor. And once I realized, tags just in cases, ...

I also saw two other flicks:

"Blood and Bone" starring Michael Jai White as Bone, a recently released prisoner getting payback as a street fighter. Decent, but could've used some more, um, I guess fight choreography. His ending fights with Michael Mullins and Eamonn Walker bordered on bad-assery, but we needed more shit like that throughout the movie. Most of his earlier fights get by with cheats (creative camera work and things like that) and it shows. Also features Dante Basco, whose best-known credit has to be as Zuko in the Avatar series, as Bone's scrappy money-grubbing sidekick.

"Dark Portals: The Chronicles of Vidocq" is a French film I can only best describe as the less surreal bastard child of "Mirrormask" and an alternate universe "Saw" where Jigsaw climbs chains and does butterfly kicks. For people who don't like gore, it'll be too gory and for those that do, it won't be considered very gory at all. It has the feel of a dark comic book. Set in 19th century France, it focuses on the hunt for the mirror-mask-wearing supernatural serial killer known as the Alchemist after his involvement with the death of the well-known PI character Vidocq (played by my second favorite Frenchman, Gérard Depardieu), with a young journo investigating the case by following all of Vidocqs notes and leads.

Anyway, it's based on a real Vidocq, so I don't know if this story is a take on a real case or anything like that. I think it's worth watching and it has an English dub for you Franco and subtitle phobes.

Kirk seemed like one of the weaker characterizations, but it feels like he's the Kirk we know at the end. As for not accomplishing anything, his aptitude was exceptionally high :p But then there's the fact that Pike, Spock, and the dead chief medical and engineering officers were the only officers on board, with the rest of the crew being filled by cadets. And then you have the fact that a large chunk of the available Starfleet personnel was wiped out at Vulcan, so there weren't many left. So it was fairly easy to climb the ladder quickly.

They needed to have fleshed out the importance of the Kobayashi Maru test, though. Never resolving or explaining the whats and whys really made that disjointed. You had to be pretty familiar with Star Trek 2 to really appreciate what was going on there.

It's a common named attached to Japanese ships used in conjunction with another word. It is usually used for commercial vessels like whalers of cargo ships.

Last movie I saw was Star Trek. All but sure someone will get me this for Christmas, but I rented it cause I didn't want to wait another month to see it again. Now that I have I rebuttal a little with it fresh in my mind.

I think all of this had a point in the story. Kirk was acting like D-bag and Spock like a robot to show you that they had to learn something from the adventure they were about to go on. I mean Kirk's father died a hero, and so this guy has spent his whole life being told how great this guy was that he never even knew and he has to live up to that. That can't be something that is easy to deal with. I should know. So he is rather defense about it all and his D-bagishness is more then likely a defense against that sort of thing to show people he isn't this guy that they keep comparing him too. You'll notice how defensive he gets when people bring up his father. Like Pike in the Bar or Spock at his "trial". And speaking of cheating on the test that's kind of character development too. It shows that he doesn't believe there is a no win situation. If that had continued you'd have seen him get a merit for creative thinking in find a way to beat the unbeatable test. When you are a Starship Captain sometimes "cheating" is the difference between life or death.

Now Spock is always trying to run away from his human side so he goes out of his way to act more vulcan then even the vulcans do. He doesn't want to show any human emotion at all. It is something he is running away from.

Actually he messed up Vulcan too. Using the "r" sound instead of the "V" sound, it just wasn't made into a joke and thus not as noticeable. Still with they could have worked "Nuclear Vessel" into that script somehow.

I think the bald heads and face tattoos where something they did on Mining vessels. That could be a in movie reason. More likely reason was that the studio didn't think people would be able to to tell the difference between Romulans (bad guys) and the Vulcans (good guys)

He only had to prove that to Spock. Spock was running away from Nero instead of confronting him because he was running away from his human side. If he went after Nero he'd be giving in to his want for revenge for killing his mother and that was too human. Kirk had to get Spock to admit this to himself. You'll notice that Spock removed himself as Captain and Kirk didn't do it. Kirk was just as emotionally unfit as Spock, but Spock was standing in the way of saving Earth. Kirk wasn't. Once Spock has his heart to heart with his father and came to terms with his feelings he came back and was totally on board. That Spock could have saved earth, but that Spock also knew that Kirk was the better man for the job.

And I can't believe I just defended the same guy that turned both Transformers movies into steaming piles of dog shit. Just goes to show that if you care about and know something about what you are working on you'll do a lot better job then if it's just another gig to you like Transformers was.

I thought you were saying this was Michael Bay, but I forgot it was Orci/Kurtzman (that's two guys, btw, both worked on both series). In their defense, I feel that Bay had a lot to do with how bad Transformers and ROTF are. That guy is a fucking tool. But I still watch his movies because awesome explosions.

I still like the TF movies for my own reasons. With a better director even with a similar script, I think they would have been much better.

And you might be right. I don't think Bay really does seem to you know CARE about the script. But while I was watching the extras when these guys weren't kissing J.J.'s ass, they were talking about how much they loved Star Trek. Course to support your theory I kinda thought that these guys would have been kids when Star Trek was on TV. (around 1967) but Orci and Kurtzman were born in 73, which would make them 12 in 1984. That would might have been too old for Transformers, maybe not. No idea how much Transformers shaped any part of their childhoods. So maybe it was Bay's fault. I really don't know one way or the other actually. I just had how much they said they loved Star Trek.

Course if it was all Bay's doing then that's just one more reason to hate him and you might be right as I really liked Trek and thought 90% of it was well written, unlike TF2 which had me face palming oncer every 15 mins. Few things could have been better, but I respect that they found a way to keep the original Trek while still rebooting it. They did show it a lot more respect then they did Transformers.

I saw New Moon a few days ago. I got dragged into it by a friend and I was just dying for the companionship apparently that I agreed to go.
I.....I really liked it.
The movie was horrible, sure. It just was so unintentionally funny in parts, and utterly vapid and shallow. The two main male leads in the film were little more than man meat, and I really enjoyed that.
When Jacob the werewolf took off his shirt this one time, every girl in the audience went "OHHHHHH!" all in unison. It was like a bad romance novel with monsters.
It has one of the lamest depictions of werewolves ever and definitely the worst excuse for vampires I've ever seen but I gotta say this was better than the last underworld flick.
I deserve to be shunned.

I shouldn't be surprised though. The entire Twilight series is a bunch of extremely badly written, cliche romance novels. This means the main female character gets reduced to an anti-feminist pushover who does nothing but look pretty and get in trouble and have the love interest romantically save her ass from the shit she gets herself into, and all the men are nothing but perfect and romantic muscular men for women to drool at and wish their boyfriends were that perfect.

It's just like most bad romance novels. Weak ass female character, sexy romantic dudes, and no fucking plot.

I watched The Delta Force. Despite the annoying repetitive 80s music that played during every action scene (and made me want to kill myself), it was great to see one of Chuck Norris' movies where he actually kicks ass, and where the terrorist are actually Middle Eastern and Muslim and hate Americans and Jews.

I also saw Dragonball Evolution about 2 weeks ago. It wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be, but it wasn't great either.

It played way too much on the whole "teen being bullied because he's not cool enough" thing, but it did lead to the most enjoyable part of the movie, where Goku beat the crap out of the bullies without actually putting a hand on them. I am glad they tried to keep true to the source material, with Roshi being a pervert, Yamcha being a bandit, Bulma and Capsule Corp, Goku being able to transform into an ape, ect...

But the movie was kinda boring. There was no sense of danger. Piccolo (thank god he looked green) was all powerful and evil, and yet needed the Dragonballs to rule the world? What, he couldn't kick Earth's ass without them? Glad they stuck to the source material, but plot kinda sucked...
