Finally finished Space Sweepers (started it like a month ago but got tired, not because of it, though).

An extremely fun movie with some great characters. My only sadness is that it's not an ongoing TV series.

The Snyder Justice League was better than the previous effort, but still felt bloated despite the dearth of character development. It was a bad implementation of a unified DC movie series from the get-go, but at least this gives the Snyderverse an actual send-off and rights the studio's wrongs.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I do not mourn what might have been or call for its continuation. Maybe now they'll actually build up to the franchise rather than shoehorn everything in a handful of bloated and overly grumpy art deco pieces.

Godzilla x Kong was okay. The humans were largely irrelevant. Godzilla was barely a character in a movie where he gets top billing. What I mean by that is... Kong had a discernible personality, whereas Godzilla behaved more like a force of nature. Maybe that was intentional, I don't know. Probably because the group of humans that was essentially "Team Godzilla" never interact with him directly for the duration of the film.

Remember the first Bayformers where there was that portion of the cast that was practically divorced from the proceedings entirely, they kind of just hovered around the periphery and reacted to shit as it happened? That's exactly what Millie Bobby Brown & Friends do in this.

The fights were good, at least. Good, not great.

Weird movie overall.

Does Godzilla have a personality? Granted, I haven't seen a whole lot of Godzilla movies. He's always seemed like a force of nature and nothing more. To me, anyway.

I mean, Godzilla definitely has a personality in a lot of his schlockier outings, but I guess I'm talking more about his behavior in 2019's King of the Monsters. Maybe it was me projecting, but I feel like in that movie you get the vibe that there's more going on in his lizard brain than just, "Destroy, destroy, destroy."

In this one he comes across as little more than Earth's janitor. Somebody makes a mess and suddenly he's there to clean it up, and then just as quickly gone again. I'm probably overthinking it.

Feels like an anticlimax after King of the Monsters, I suppose that's my major gripe.

"Godzilla: Earth's Janitor." I like the sound of that. Hmmm... "Mothra: Earth's Babysitter."

See, you bring up Mothra, and... KotM is just a way, way better movie. Like, I got fucking emotional when Mothra took that blast for Godzilla and then her fairy dust revitalized him or whatever. There's nothing as cool as that scene in GxK.

In fact, there's the opposite of that where there's this alley-oop team-up attack and it's just... ugh.

Haha! Yeah, they came up with a very specific plot contrivance to address that exact situation. And then it ends up factoring into the aforementioned alley-oop.

The more I think about the movie, the less I like it.

I watched a review of this movie and it's dumb that Godzilla had a chance to kill Kong (in the city) and just fucks off. I hate when movies do this crap. Give us a reason this is done. Ass-pull someone saving Kong. But to have Godzilla do the equivalent of "Hmph, don't let me see you again, b-baka" is MEH.

Yeah, Godzilla basically beats the the shit out of Kong and leaves him to die. Like, he could have finished him, but he leaves him there to... slowly die in agony, I guess? Then human man has the idea to use one of their futuristic hover vehicles as a makeshift defibrillator to kickstart Kong's heart and save him. Uh?

Meanwhile, Godzilla is being absolutely wrecked by Mecha Godzilla, and when Kong shows up to help I'm pretty sure there was a reaction shot of Godzilla looking mildly confused as if to say, "Huh? Thought I killed you. Oh well, guess it's good that I didn't." Kongzilla double-team Mecha Godzilla -- THE END.

There was really very, very little thought put into any of it.

Mecha should've interrupted the Zilla-Kong fight and beat the shit outta both of them. Then they have to be unlikely allies to beat Mecha and part ways at the end with begrudging respect for one another.

But see, you're bringing intelligence and creativity into this. Forget all that.

I might be misremembering, but I don't think Mecha even reveals himself until after Kong and G-Money finish their fight. How considerate, right?

He must have read the script.

No, you know what? I forgot something super fucking important. When Kong revives, the little native girl from Skull Island uses ASL (this was introduced earlier in the movie) to inform him that G-Dawg is not, in fact, the enemy.

And I was like, "Man, what's the sign for 'Godzilla'? Cause knowing that shit came in handy!"

I also watched GvK. I enjoyed it but I can't disagree with any particular criticisms above. It could have been a much better movie, but I still had fun with it. I'm a little sad that Kong didn't decide to keep his propeller flail from Skull Island, that bit was great.

Mortal Kombat wasn't terrible. They kind of raced to the finish line in the back third, though. Like, really one-sided fights.

I'm shocked at how much people have bashed Mortal Kombat (2021). It's not spectacular but it's really not as bad as some make it out to be. Some of the characters were underused or used in a way that was disappointing, that's good criticism, and some of the fighting was weak.

At the same time, they could have made the movie about just Sub-Zero and Scorpion and it might have been a better decision.

I haven't kept up with MK games for 20 years, but I was still kind of surprised they went right back into an origin of the franchise style movie. But given their spotty past MK '95 was shlocky fun, the '98 shitfest should have permanently buried the entire IP, the unexpectedly strong web series that didn't take off, and the recent animated movie that I'm sure wasn't a roaring success, I'm more surprised they did another movie at all. It was fun, but definitely not worth rewatching ever again.

I don't see the point of an MK movie with no tourney and a new character when there's so many to choose from. I feel bad for Lewis Tan because he seems really talented. If I were making a movie on one of my stories, I have the perfect lead character for him, too. But as it stands, there's a lot of "ffff Cole Young, screw the guy who played him" and I hope his career doesn't get pulled into that nonsense.

Also, yuck to that Mileena. I've given up ever getting a 10/10 Mileena.

I watched Black Widow.

It was ooooookaaaaaay.

I feel like the MCU is coming up on its first major hurdle. Shang-Chi and Eternals both look so, so bland.

But then, they could end up sucking and still make bank, it's not as if that's never happened before.

People seem to enjoy riding the Marvel train regardless of wildly variable quality.

I haven't watched BW but I think Shang-Chi actually looks like it's going to be pretty good (early reviews are positive as well but those are the most important ones to view skeptically, they don't want to lose their screening access).

Recently we've decided to watch the live action Disney remakes because we hate ourselves. Aladdin was terrible. The Jungle Book was okay.

But what the fuck is Christopher Walken's Louie on about with calling Papaya as "Pawpaw" and then saying it was a stolen word? Papaya comes from a Taino word but it appears to be pronounced fairly close to how most pronounce papaya. Pawpaw is sometimes used to refer to the fruit (and to another similar looking but very different fruit). Wouldn't pawpaw be more the bastardization of the original word?

Also, the gigantopithecus version of King Louie is absolutely fucking terrifying as a concept but the animation is bad enough on most of the animals that it takes a lot away.

I've been on a tear lately...

Space Jam New Legacy: abhorrent
Green Knight: great
Suicide Squad: great
Fast 9: dogshit
Jungle Cruise: not terrible
Inside Llewyn Davis (I know this this old, I somehow skipped it back in the day): great
Pig (You know, the recent Nic Cage film): surprisingly great
Free Guy: fucking awful
Snake Eyes G.I. Joe Origins: surprisingly decent

Oh yeah, I also watched a few of those that I forgot about.

The Suicide Squad was so much better than I expected and a needed step up in quality from Suicide Squad.
Space Jam New Legacy was incredibly bizarre. None of it made any damn sense. That could maybe also be said about the original but at least it was entertaining.
Luca was adorable.

Wife and I watched all of the Hunger Games movies. I'd never seen them. I don't think they're great but it was fun to watch them altogether in a run, and now I can finally understand dated references that no one is making anymore.

Dune.

Underwhelming.

Dare I say... downright disappointing?

I do dare.

You know, when someone comes around and they're all, "Hey, I want to bring back Dune. I've got some ideas for a modern take on Dune," you'd be forgiven for thinking, "Oh! This guy's got some all-new special sauce mixed up for us! He's got something cooking over here!"

But nah. Nah.

I'm watching Dune this weekend and I've been prepping myself by remembering how I upset I've been with basically every adaptation of any novel I've loved, so I'm hoping I'll at least enjoy it as it is without being too upset with whatever I don't like about it. Making myself anti-hype.

Are you a fan of Lynch's Dune? I am. Maybe that's my biggest problem with this new one.

See, Lynch's Dune is just Dune to me. Straight up. I would have been a little kid when I first encountered it, and it made one hell of an impression.

Later I played Dune II for the PC, and aesthetically that one lines right up with Lynch's film. It all just makes cohesive sense.

Then I read Herbert's book. Woof! No thanks.

Maybe Villeneuve’s is a more authentic take on the source material, but to me it just comes off as a lame new autotuned cover of an old song I love.
