Ha! I saw Your Name a while back and didn't get the hype either. It was a cute story but the characters were so cookie-cutter and bland I couldn't feel anything.

I went and re-watched the Nightmare Before Christmas with Merla at the theater. I almost never have movie concessions because I typically go somewhere like Alamo Drafthouse and order a meal there on the rare occasion I actually go to the movies. Merla treated tho' so we had two drinks, a soft pretzel for Merla, and some churros for me. Despite being an old movie, it was still regular movie price. Even so, the damn food cost more than the movie. And the small Icee she bought me was freakishly enormous.

I'm planning to see Thor soon, but I'm in a bit of a conundrum. I would have gone this weekend, but I was on-call, and I refuse to go to a movie that I may have to leave at the drop of a hat. Particularly since I prefer going to Tuscaloosa to see movies these days, since it's not much farther to travel and has a far superior cinema than we have locally. So it would need to be next weekend.

However, there are special showings of Casablanca (my all-time favorite movie) on Sunday and Wednesday next week, and I'd like to figure out a way to see one of those as I've never seen it in an actual movie theater. But the closest theater showing it is an hour and a half away. Church catches me on Sunday, and work catches me on Wednesday. So I'm trying to figure that out.

And on top of that Justice League comes out next weekend.

So what I'm thinking is to just plan on going to see Casablanca next Sunday afternoon immediately after church, run back immediately to catch ensemble practice and night church, and then go see Thor the following weekend at Tuskyloser and wait on JL with the presumption that it will turn out to be a smoldering heap of raw sewage.

Finally watched Event Horizon. It was good, gotta love a good space horror movie (except Leprechaun).

Saw Get Out like a couple of months ago. I dont get the hype, I really dont. I just watched "Get Out 2" (a funny gay version) and that was much better than that movie tbh.

I saw some cheesy by-the-numbers romcom called New in Town on Amazon Prime.  City Mouse comes to a small podunk town, falls in love with the people and meets that special someone blah-blah-blah.  Nothing special but a generally inoffensive way to kill time... other than them using fuckin' Papyrus font for their opening credits.

I wanna see Thor but I don't see myself having any time in the next few weeks.  I have no interest in Justice League and, believe me, those are words I never thought I'd be typing together in the same sentence. 

I'm conflicted about Coco and I only bring up that movie because I felt bombarded by ads for it. Coco looks so bland to me and I want it to bomb badly... but if it does, the media will be all "no one wants a movie with Mexicans" when the issue is the movie looks like every other Pixar movie, Disney is still a shit for actually trying to copywrite "Dia de los Muertos," and WE ALREADY HAVE THE BOOK OF LIFE.  Really, Coco, you have to have the same general tone, similar protags, and even seem to be pulling from the same color palette?  And it's not like I don't want more movies on this subject but there needed to be a greater shift away from The Book of Life.  This should've been a true musical (not featuring a music competition, but a Beauty and the Beast style musical with emotional Mexican or Spanish-language music) or it should've gone 'darker' like "Nightmare Before Christmas."  Would've LOVED a movie featuring a cool Catrina character or something like that instead of ANOTHER live young male's perspective.  But dumb Disney doesn't even think about switching it up.  There's also a "Dia Los Muertos" moving coming from Mexico but who knows if we'll see that one appear in the States.

And Murder on the Orient Express is coming out this week.  That one just makes me sad.  It looks like a total dud.  And I don't mean in the way Coco does.  Coco looks like a dud but it'll probably perform well regardless.  This Murder on the Orient Express looks corny.  Poirot's mustache looks goofy, the characters come off as over-acted, and I just don't feel like audiences will respond to this film.  And I would love big screen Poirot adventures, but not like this.

Kinda interested in seeing The Shape of Water next month.  I'm so used to having a million Guillermo del Toro projects announced and then nothing to show for it that I didn't realize he had made something new already.

Im stoked AF for The Shape of Water. As always good ol' Guille delivers, with those beautiful colors and music.

I hope Murder on the Orient Express does good, because 1) its one of my fave AC books, and 2) if it actually does good then they will probably do more AC-books movies.

The first Coco trailer made me cry to be honest ( I was drunk) . It looks like a cute movie. Love how the dog's name is Dante, thats a nice little touch.

Pixar is kind of dog shit now. Like, I wonder if Disney poached all their best people or something, because Disney's CG stuff has been way better than Pixar's recently. Did you guys see The Good Dinosaur? That one seemed like a total B-Team effort, and I get that same vibe from this Coco thing. And then if you look at all Pixar's recent and upcoming stuff, it's all sequels. Finding Dory, Cars 3, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4. Reminds me of when Disney made all those trash sequels to their popular films.

Basically the Pixar name was essentially a seal of quality, and now it's just not. Like, even remotely.

I've seen it, and the graphs are beautiful, and so is the music (reminded me of the music from the movie Contact). The story is meh.

So I watched Arrival. It was good. I can kind of see why people compare it to Contact. I wish I watched it in the theater tho.

Hellraiser 1, 2 and 3. I have to say, the first one was like meh but the second one holy shit so GORY. Had to close my eyes a couple of times because of it, yuck. Third one was terrible and I see there are like 5 more or so and a new one coming supposedly this year? I dont think I can watch anymore of it, its not entertaining.

Justice League is a big old sloppy mess, but it's not the worst thing ever.

If I had to pick one thing I really hated about it, I'd have to say it was Henry Cavill's CG shave. Like, holy shit. Now I can only wonder if I even would have noticed if I hadn't heard about it beforehand, but going in with that knowledge, God damn was it ever distracting.

I wanted Coco to fail but the fact that it's besting Justice League this weekend--a movie that would've creamed the competition in an alternate universe that actually contains logical production choices--gives me a hearty chuckle.

I keep hearing people talk about (and reading people type about...which totally doesn't sound right but is the exact same phrasing as the previous) how Justice League is proof that Hollywood has to rethink the whole superhero team-up movie and how the genre is tired and/or overwrought and there's too much and not enough continuity between movies and they have to do this sort of movie with this sort of hook or this color actor or whatever. I have an idea: quit making movies that suck. Just make good little movies that loosely tie together.

That's what Marvel did...a bunch of good and fun movies that stood on their own merits but tied into each other by way of SHIELD or what-have-you. After a few years and some uniformly decent-to-good movies, they had a universe to work in. None of the other cinematic universe abortions (DCEU, Universal Dark Universe, Hasbro Shared Universe, etc.) bothered to lay any sort of actual foundation to create a brand, a known quantity (with a degree of quality) that would draw people in. They want the payoff without the groundwork, and that's why they're falling on their faces.

And I think Warner is getting it. They're looking now at going more standalone with the post-JL movies and using Wonder Woman as the template. Aquaman and Shazam are both getting positive anticipatory buzz. Wondy 2 is coming. Possibly a Cyborg and GLC. The Rock as Black Adam may yet happen! Zack Snyder is out; Geoff Johns is in as the guiding hand of the whole enchilada. If they can put the Snyderverse behind them and just move ahead with cool movies with new characters and scenarios for mainstream moviegoers that simply don't suck (even if they aren't especially good, though it'd help), I think it'll work out great.

Watched and cried too. I hate how all these Pixar movies give you at LEAST one good cry per movie. I mean seriously , why not make a movie that is 100% happiness? its tiring.

 I was a bit late so I arrived when that short was just finished.

I read online that Disney thought it was a good idea to put it right before Coco to try to attract "white kids" to a "mexican" movie but it obviously ended up backfiring on their asses.

Its 22 minutes for a reason (it was originally made to be shown on tv). Btw Disney just sent a memo to the theaters that from Dec 8 onwards they stop showing the Frozen short. So yay I guess?

22 minutes!?  Good gravy!  10 minutes at the most for a short in front of an animated movie.  The only excuse for 22 minutes is a 45-minute or even 60-minute feature but Coco is, like, 109 minutes long.  Sheesh.  Merla and Schmoo went to go see Coco and say they cried.  Still not interested in seeing it through.

I did watch A Silent Voice in its entirety on Saturday after work.  I cried for that.  Waaaay better than Your Name.  More real, no magic timeskip meteor-bullshit involved, just a story about a dude that used to be a bully and the deaf girl he picked on.  Pity it got financially clobbered by Your Name.  The only thing I didn't like about A Silent Voice was the weird friend.  That guy was on the fine line between funny and annoying and usually he teetered to the latter.

It was... pretty damn good. If I have one gripe it's that the attempts at humor, much like in Force Awakens, are still all over the place. Some of it is legitimately hilarious, other parts are strictly roll-your-eyes type stuff. But at the end of the day I do prefer levity over them being up their own asses, so whatever.

Aside from that, there was one scene in particular where I swear the entire crowd fell silent for the duration. Like, no one was expecting this thing and no one could believe it was happening. It was great.

Anyway, I enjoyed it. Big surprise, I know.

I dont agree with joe regarding the attempts at humor. I thought they were all well timed.

Only thing that annoyed me is 1) they made it a United Colors of Bennetton ad , 2) they didnt reveal what I thought was the important reveal.
