« on: Jul 18, 2008, 12:20:02 AM »
I'm gonna go join the Navy. I mean, like, for real. Like, I already spoke to a recruiter and took my ASVAB.

It's a really good deal, though. They pay for everything I'll ever need, I work my ass off for four years or more. The pay is damn good, too, especially considering that I don't have anyone else I gotta give it to.

I'm gonna do some hellacious working out, though. If boot camp's gonna kick my ass, I want it to kick my ass marginally less than the rest of the saps there.

If my acting career fails I might join too.  I figure combat has to be one of the greatest thrills out there.  Plus I has a master's degree which means they'll make me an officer.  I'll have my own Dai-Gurren brigade!  I'll mold these socially awkward young men into level 70 pimps.  We'll be stationed in tokyo and tear through the geishas like nobodies business.

Be warned, so may people I know joined the military for their education, and they come out with nothing. You have to be on top of it so they don't fuck you over. Vets don't get jobs in America unless they have the education to back it up.

In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
In the navy
Yes, you can put your mind at ease
In the navy
Come on now, people, make a stand
In the navy, in the navy
Can't you see we need a hand
In the navy
Come on, protect the motherland
In the navy
Come on and join your fellow man
In the navy
Come on people, and make a stand
In the navy, in the navy, in the navy (in the navy)

They want you, they want you
They want you as a new recruit!

Congrats! One of my friends went in and is currently a Navy Seal, specializing in underwater demolitions.

I just heard IDE whoop in approval.

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

Dude, I could never be a Seal. My dad wanted me to go into the Marines, and I don't wanna do that either. I wanna go on a ship so that the only fighting I see will be 600 miles away from where I'm at. Hell, they put Marines on the ship in to off chance you get boarded, just to make sure the sailors don't have to fight.

Tom, thanks for the warning. I'm definitely gonna stay vigilant and ask as many questions as I can.

All you have to do is apply for a federal job; any job.  Vets get first dibs on everything.  It's why I didn't get hired as a permanent fulltime engineer and project manager at the nearby naval air station.  Two applicants, one was a veteran: done deal.  Schooling and experience made no difference.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Vets get first dibs on jobs listed at the local government employment agency, and they get first dibs on programs there as well. I mean, I'm glad some of them went out and almost got themselves killed in the name of protecting our country, but not all vets see combat yet they all get special treatment.

The PBS special Carrier has made me think twice about ever joining the military.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

Not if you're not qualified, many vets aren't being educated in the army or navy.

In the military, no matter what job you get, you're still busting your ass every day for at least four years before returning to civilian life. Even if you're stuck changing light bulbs of refilling batteries for the entire term of service, there are very strict criteria you have to meet every single day, from the cleanliness of your sleeping area to the length of time it takes you to shower, as well as meeting the demands of your job. It takes a lot of discipline to be able to take all that. Of course you wouldn't understand it, you whine about everything from headlights to monkey livers to shoes.

Anyway, I got my ASVAB results today. Apparently, I'm qualified to be anything but a nuke. Which is fine, because calculus is scary. Now I get to take my papers and pick a job.

My master's is in Media and Communication studies.  I could use it to get into a creative development position.  I'll probably try to do that when I get out to LA if things don't work out the way I want I could always just  rise to producer level powet and cast myself.

Completely unrelated, and because I don't feel like starting a new thread. Norbert the Black Lab of Awesomeness died today. Of heat stroke because, like and idiot, I forgot to chell the water til 9pm. When I found him, he was still alive, and I had my brother help me bring him inside. We dribbled water into his mouth and it seemed to be helping, but all of a sudden he just stopped. Moving, breathing, everything. He was only a year and a half old, so he wasn't even grown up by lab standards. We hadn't been letting the dogs inside because Miina's allergic to them and Norbert was sometimes overly playful and didn't always pay any attention to boundaries, though now I think all this could have been avoided had we just left the doggie door open and let them come and go as they pleased. I finally taught him to roll on his back, too. Total suck.

That sucks, sorry to hear it :(

...I don't know what I'd do that happened to me.  I'd probably kill a few people randomly in a fit of mad grief.

Then Hera would make me do heroic labors to atone for it.

I've had two black labs in my life...Slick the Whitetail Tracker died in '92 of parvo at the age of 5, and Victor of the Large Gonads died in '05 of an acute vehicular contusion at the age of 13.  I don't know what it is about that particular dog that makes people love them like they do, but it's sure hard to let them go.

People love labs because they're the awesomest dogs in the world, period. Norbert was even cooler because he wasn't full lab. His mama looked like a big blond fox, so he had a gorgeous fluffy mane and slender build going on. He also loved to put his body heat all over people's feet when they slept, which was quite handy last winter, even if I did end up washing a lot of bedding.

Sophie the Chow Mix of Shy Sweetness got to come and go as she pleased today. We're gonna keep letting her in, and keep an eye on her water dishes, so she doesn't meet the same end as her hyper counterpart. Miina of the Pet Allergy is actually really happy she gave Sophie a chance, and is even talking about getting a harness so she can take the dog on runs, which is really really adorable.

I think retrievers, in spite of their outrageous shedding 356 days a year, give labs a run for their money.

You mean like a labrador retriever, often referred to as a lab?

A golden retriever's not as much a water dog as a Labrador, but they're of the same mold.

I got a good score on the ASVAB back in high school, but I couldn't see myself working on reactors in a submarine on the other side of and under the surface of the world.  But I wound up taking four semesters of calculus hell in the civilian ranks.

Our having 2 Lab mixes is why we've never seriously considered a pool.  I can't mop up floors all the time.

Sorry to hear that, Bitch.  :'(

My gay brother got into the Air Force and stayed for 8 years.  I tried, but was turned down because of bad knees.  I guess I could have gotten a desk job, but I said I wanted to be a pilot or bombadier. They couldn't help me, but they liked my attitude.  :raiseroof:

I've heard that if you've ever been knocked out, you're be ineligible for piloting fighters.  I could understand if it were a concussion, but I don't know.  As many times as I got my bell rung playing football, the army might have been wary of putting a rifle in my hands in infantry, much less the USAF giving me a thumb switch for Fox 2.

The army wouldn't take my brother because his spine is curved, and they said he wouldn't be able to handle a backpack. It's ironic and hilarious, because he uses a longboard and a hiking backpack to make grocery runs.

Also, I had no idea how out of shape I was until this last couple weeks. I was proud of myself last night because I finally ran all the way around the block, and used the adrenaline from that to do five normal pushups. Marcus bought a weight bar and some five pound weights, and I've been having fun in the evenings creating slip and fall hazards in the living room after the air conditioner gets turned off. Now I have loose skin everywhere, and I'm hungry no matter what I eat. It's awesomely terrible! :D

I find it amazing that I used to do 300 push-ups, 300 sit-ups, and 300 jump-ropes twice a day before each two-hour football practice.  I'd spontaneously combust if I had to do a dozen of either at this point.
