This is fucking hillarious. His professors must either love or despize him. Since I'm studying Japan in part (along with Korea, France, England and America) I am used to Japanese papers somehow incorporating Kenshin or some other anime bullshit, but to write a whole dissertation on it? Wow. I don't know why anyone would want to or how it could ever strengthen the field.

I suppose it's better than studying ghetto culture, though.

If you're ballsy enough to spend 4 years on that godawful subject, maybe the professors might like him, though knowing the state of the Asian studies in the American South (Florida being a sole exception) I doubt any of the faculty cares enough about modern Japan to understand the concept beyond what they'll read of this.

There is a book out there about this, but it's so horribly written that I bet it's going to be his primary source.
