Hokuto No Ken and Hokuto No Ken 2, respectively. Series ran from 1984 to 1988 while the manga did 245 chapters from from 1983 to 1987. I'd say the first series is better, almost exclusively because it featured Raoh. Kai'Oh and Falco weren't horrible replacements in HNK 2 though.

I forget for WHAT exactly, but him being arrested put the shunt on the last two episodes that were going to be produced. I still can't find translated manga online beyond something like volume 10, which isn't that much further than where the OVA ended. Fuck Berserk and all those other long-runners, somebody needs to translate Bastard!.

Rose of Versailles...never done in English to my knowledge.  Hopefully I'll be able to download some of it soon and get a chance to see it, given that it's often held up as one of the all-time greatest examples of anime.
You mean dubbed or subbed? I know a webpage that has it subbed, if you want it.
I didn't know people have heard about it here! why is it held as one of the all time greatest?

There's a full version of this dance? :o

I've given it some thought and have decided that any male watching this show has something wrong with them.  I haven't finalized exactly what is wrong with this person but anyone who avidly champions this show is abnormal, far more abnormal than your average anime fan.  This is strawberry short cake done in anime.  If this was an american cartoon they wouldn't be watching it.  I mean if all the characters of this show were replaced with the bratz dolls would these grown men losers still be watching it?

The series apparently stopped. Have the books been translated into English?

Two of them.  It looks like they'll be doing one a year or something.

There's a new Slayers series. I'll watch that.

I got sick of Slayers by the second series.

I didn't even watch episode 6 of bastard! When I read the wiki that said there are no plans for more I deleted the torrent after watching up to 5 or 4.5.  I mean that's not even a half an arc.

Bastard! was worth the watch in my opinion.

Yeah, she does get kinda whiney but like tom said she improves.

I keep hearing that bastard! was supposed to be some great anime.  I just don't see it.  It seems really old school and the intricate details that I usually like about anime powers weren't there.

"AHA! We have Darsh now!"

"Why?!"

"Cause thats a fire elemental and his magic is based on fire! HAHAHA!"

Batman: Gotham Knight is disappointing, but purty.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

12 kingdoms is not some epic story.  At least not yet but I'm on episode 31 of 45 so if they're gonna start some epic story arc they better get crackin.  So far it's a bunch of whiny girls looking for the princess (and her problems are mainly trying to keep her dukes in chell instead of battling monsters and their evil god overlord...because there is no evil god overlord, thats what this anime needs) and this other guy whose all "hay guyz! I has a gun but I won't shoot! :3"

The setting of this anime has all the potential for some epic oriental LOTR style shit to go down but so far it hasn't delivered.

My Hime

I'm mixed on this series. I didn't hate it to be certain, and I love how it jumps into the action immediately. But at the same time, I was hoping for more battles, and at the end it kinda delved into a bit of a pacifist bent (and Magical Girl bent at that) with the whole "Love conquers all" (but I whined about that in another thread so I won't go into it now). Not to mention the creators trying almost to make it seem like every girl in the series were lesbians, when you could tell the "love" between Mai and Mikoto was sisterly love, and the Yukino x Haruka relationship was just friendship too (although Yukino almost seemed like she loved Haruka more than a friend). Sometimes the motives and actions of the HiME, when they were fighting each other, seemed unclear or extreme or against their characters. The Nun acted very un-nun-like, posing nude and allowing a man to manipulate her into sinning by lying and attacking other HiME. It seemed unbelieveable that Shizuru would go insane after being spurned by Natsuki. The fanservice betwen episodes on the dvd was excessive and unnecessary, if I were planning to show the series to younger relatives I'd have to skip over it.

Characters I didn't like in the series included Nao and Shiho. Nao, I liked her sadistic bent and those claws, but I didn't like the fact that she really didn't give a shit about anyone but herself. It was no wonder she had no friends, she didn't seem to have an ounce of kindness in her at all. Shiho drove me nuts. It was obvious why Tate didn't want to date her, besides the age difference, Shiho's immature, selfish, and possessive. Anyone who's close friends with others should be more concerned about their friend's happiness, even if that happiness means the person dates someone else. Shiho, on the other hand, acted so selfish that she was just a total immature bitch to Mai. Rather than worry about Tate's happiness she only concerned herself with her own jealous feelings, which showed that she fit her age of 12-13, if not being as mature as an 8 year old. No wonder Tate didn't want her, she acted like a child and a brat. There were times I wanted to bitchslap Shiho and I think Tate should have done the same.

Origin: Spirits of the Past (movie, 1.5 hours long)

Plot: In a terraforming project gone horribly wrong, a bunch of genetically enhanced trees on the moon become sentient, shatter the moon, and destroy most of the earth. It's 300 years from that disaster and intelligent trees control most of the world. A small village lives in a strained peace between the forest and a country that wants to destroy the forest. A teen from the village awakens a teen girl from stasis, the daughter of the man who made the original trees on the moon, who joins the country to find a giant weapon her father left to return the world to normal. The boy enters a pact with the trees, giving him super powers, and goes to fight the country's army and save/stop the girl.

Feelings: The artwork in this movie was quite lovely. That's about the only real good thing I can say about this. The movie felt like it could have stretched for several more hours and been interesting, but then it suddenly goes into the climax. The trees threaten to kill all humanity, so there's little sympathy for them, and you almost find yourself rooting for the bad guys to return the world to normal. Most of the characters barely get any screen time, so they end up extremely flat and boring.

This feels like a crappy clone of a Miyazaki film without the Miyazaki touch. I've seen better enviromental-type themes in Naussica and Mononoke. I'd suggest either just renting this or skipping it entirely, as if I had bought it, I would have gone and got a refund.

Mentioned a second Negima series that's supposed to be 10 times better than the first... It's been out a while, but it seems Funi just picked it up and started dubbing it.

There's also a Negima live action series in japan... The dvd comes with a vomit bag in case it makes you spew. You know, if they're going to do a live action of a Akamatsu series, I'm suprised they didn't do a live action Love Hina.

I often wonder about my anime judgment due to the fact that I always enjoyed Love Hina, particularly the manga.  It could have been better, particularly had Keitaro repeatedly violated Naru's cornhole after her second or third Point-of-Light Punch, but every man's work could be improved upon hindsight.

The only reason I wasn't so hot on Love Hina was because Keitaro was used as a punching bag the whole series. The humor of it got stale after a while. Ho ho, nerdy guy who can't get chicks is surrounded by them but they kick his ass all the time=comedy?! It was starting to get as old as MadTV's skits all making fun of retarded people.

Right now I'm renting Gunslinger Girl, and I'm a tad disappointed in the fact this show seems to be 90% character development and 10% people turning into bullet swiss cheese.

I'm kinda of the mindset that once you've seen one anime like that, you've pretty much seen them all.

They have their charms.  The whole point of Love Hina was to watch Keitaro bumble his way into the saddle.  This was, as usual, far more developed in the manga.

I'm currently watching two anime series that are very similar: Aquarion and Zegapain.  They're both about young people piloting mecha and fighting para/supernatural alien invaders, but with differences that give them a whole different flavor.  The former is set in either a far-flung future or completely different planet that was been invaded by angelic-like creatures 12,000 years ago but won through the efforts of an alien turncoat.  The teams of three pilot three vehicles that combine into a gesault form whose functionality depends on which segment of it each vehicle assumes.  The aliens abduct people to feed on some energy derived from them ("prana"), and the main character, the reincarnation of the hero from 12,000 years ago, fights to free his friends while being a douchebag the whole way.

The latter is more along the lines of the Matrix, but with a twist: in this show, the aliens won and killed everyone on Earth.  All the people are data stored on quantum computer servers in different world zones, but they don't know it because they live in a Matrix that mimics their lives before humanity was obliterated.  For whatever reason, some of these people are able to pilot ships that allow them to live on as holograms, whereas their Zega ships allow them to interact with the real world...those interactions primarily about fighting the enemy and pushing them off the earth.  The main character, who's actually likeable, a rarity in giant robot shows; has to deal with the reality that neither he nor his friends are real anymore in either world they choose to live, and he has to decide if there's a point to continuing or if it doesn't amount to nothing more than a computer game.

Like I said, very similar in concept, but they're distinctive enough to be more than worthwhile to see.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I saw the gurren lagann dub on sci fi.  Kamina is voiced by Gohan.  I think he could've done a good job but he wasn't directed properly.

You know, it amazes me over and over again the things I see on anime that you will never see on most network or cable channels in the US, stuff that's just too naughty or sexual for American TV.

For instance, to give an example of what I'm talking about, take an anime oriented towards teenagers, take some of the females who may or may not be underaged, and have something "innocently" rub over their crotch and boobs. Which is what happened in this scene. It was blatantly sexual. Rub rub... "moooaan"

In the US, such a scene on TV would have the FCC and angry bible belt parents all over that shit faster than a fat man spotting a cupcake. In Japan they wouldn't bat an eyelash over it.

Which makes me wonder if there's something in the water or if, because of their repressive culture, the Japs are just really really fucking horny.

I learned from Samurai Champloo that they used to be very sexual and that we repressed them with our western ways when we started trading with them.

In capsule hotels, there's a big red button for pron on the TV.  Don't need trannies; just some wipes for the ceiling.
