What Anime are you watching?
« on: Jun 07, 2007, 06:02:32 PM »
Boo. I'm stealing Nuri's topic ideas.

I just finished watching Elfen Lied about two weeks ago. It had a sad yet satisfying ending, like when you eat your last bowl of frosted flakes. It was also somewhat less bloody than I expected. I've seen worse.

Right now I'm watching Mahou Sensei Negima. It's a harem anime, yet I fail to see how it's a harem as the guy's a 10 year old boy surrounded by women who look like they're in high school. But it sure has the whole "lead male gets beat up by the women" thing going on (Edit: and it's ALWAYS the love interest who beats up the guy, even in this series!)... are Japanese males into submission and torture? And why do anime women think the men's intentions are always perverted, are Japanese males all a bunch of horny pedos? Well, at least this anime doesn't have excessive fanservice yet, I'm sure we don't need to see any more animated 15 year old panty shots.

I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

I'm currently downloading death note and shingu.

And watching Escaflowne (subbed) on On Demand cable.

I thought elfen lied was ok.  Before my computer got wiped I hadn't deleted it even after I finished watching it because I was entertaining the idea that one day I would meet a hot chick who was into anime and we'd watch elfen lied and have sex while that crazy bitch tore people up with her invisible hands.

None. I've given up anime pretty much. I might catch Gundam00 when it comes out, but otherwise... eh.
I said its hot outside let me go swimming in your eyes;
We been running for awhile. Why don't you lay dow, I'll make you smile.
I could never ask for nothing better than this;
It's just tequila and the beach, it's quite salty when we kiss.

I quit watching Elfen Lied on the third volume.  I just never cared for it.  I may eventually watch the last volume just to close it out, but I'm in no hurry.

Negima's a cute series, but the final arc of the anime was pretty surprising, perhaps even shocking.  Of course, it ended as expected, but it certainly followed a strange course to get there.  It was worth seeing through to the end.

I keep a fairly long list of stuff I'm currently watching, and I have a number that I'm still catching up on.  I still haven't finished the second season of the Ghost in the Shell series, but I have every intention of starting over from the beginning and marathoning it.  Air Gear's been fun so far, Hellsing Ultimate's first OVA (much closer to the manga this go-around) was AWESOME, Eureka Seven's been very enjoyable.  Haruhi just came out, and it was a lot of fun.  I've also been watching the older stuff, like You're Under Arrest and the new dub of Macross.  Bleach has been good, and I liked Black Lagoon.  Coyote Ragtime Show has been fun.  Ultramaiden Valkyrie is pretty shitty, though...talk about a show lending itself to lolicon.

As for shows I recently finished up, Gun Sword was a lot better than I expected, and Mars Daybreak was much cooler than it gets credit for being.  Hare+Guu's a hoot, but I haven't seen the Deluxe OVA yet (had to use a trial Blockbuster Online rental to get it...Netflix is starting to be a pain when it comes to new anime).  My-Hime took a while to heat up, but when it did, it was pretty enjoyable.  For a show that was the anniversary series for Gainax, This Ugly Yet Beautiful World was comparatively lackluster.

Can anyone tell what episode of gitsac I'm on?

It's the one where laughing man comes back and re-visits/kidnaps the senator only it's secretly someone else posing as him at one point (i won't say who for people that haven't seen it)...actually I could be wrong about that last part...it's been awhile but I don't feel like rewatching from ep 1.

Merla and I finished Gankutsuou and are watching Saiyuki Reload Gunlock.  I've also been revisting Yu Yu Hakusho, mainly the eps that I recorded back when the Dark Tournament was being shown on Toonami.

I saw most of Negima back when we had Dish on ColoursTV.  The ending was something else.  I didn't really follow the series closely because it was getting tedious so I missed out on what exactly led up to the ending.

Escaflowne is wonderful.

I found out there's two Negimas... the one I'm watching and one called Negima!? which has the same characters but is an action series rather than a harem/fanservice one.

Kashimashi: Girl meets Girl has also caught my eye. It's about some boy who dies and aliens resurrect him as a girl and he has lesbian-like relationships with his girl friends. At least this guy knows what to do when he turns into a woman! If it were me I'd be having lesbian sex with as many women as I could find.

I've continued going through the tiny remnants of my anime collection rewatching some of the stuff from there.  So I've revisited the Darkstalkers anime, Key the Metal Idol, and Galaxy Fraulein Yuna.

Escaflowne is wonderful.

Yes, yes, yes!  Certainly an anime classic there.  That $40 perfect collection I got remains one of the best anime deals I ever made.

For other oldies but goodies...I believe His & Her Circumstances has wound up supplanting Evangelion as my all-time favorite anime series.  Despite the considerable flaws, that which works works so wonderfully that it more than makes up for the shortcomings.

I would like Escaflowne on DVD, but the only reason would be for subless viewing since I've heard enough of it in English and Brian Drummond couldn't save that thing if he went into Zechs-overload and shat out a fireball.  My tapes do just fine, so I see no reason to re-buy it when I can try something else.  The movie on the other hand I do have on DVD and pee-yewwww.

I recently purchased Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. Quite enjoyed the randomness and spoofing nature of it.

"Hey kids how the fuck are you? Would you like some fucking hot dogs? How about some fucking ketchup or some fucking mustard on that fucking hot dog?!"

I don't want it to be easy, I want it to be right.

I've been sitting here comparing Negima to Love Hina, when they (or at least the manga of them) were made by the same guy.

At least the anime is light on the excessive underage fanservice. The manga of Negima I glanced at this weekend, and there's a panty shot every other page!

Abenobashi is a real hoot, but it, like many of its kind, takes a serious turn towards the end.  Still a lot of fun.

The English dub of Escaflowne wasn't horrible, but it wasn't the best.  But given that most localized anime of the time was absolute trash, that's worth noting.  I still enjoyed it.

The panty shot is an Akamatsu hallmark.  I still prefer Love Hina over Negima...but if you're looking for a really good harem romantic comedy, Ai Yori Aoshi is still my favorite.

Not horrible like "teh werst eva" but not worth spending extra money to hear it, especially since I already own the series and can make DVDs off of my tapes.  On a related note (because I first watched them both concurrently), Saber Marionette J's dub is worse than Escaflowne's.  Saffron Henderson as Bloodberry is the only saving grace.  And perhaps Maggie Blue O'Hara as Lime.  Two main characters are just terribly miscasted and a lot of the acting is meh.

Treize was probably used to that.  :P  Funny that Brian always nanners on in interviews about how Alan is his all-time favorite role - I was more impressed with Ed the Doorman.

I hear a lot about Death Note, but not so much that really says why it's to be seen.  It's not out here yet, so until then I'm not really concerned with finding out.

I liked "the Pine Bluff Variant" episode of the "X-Files" myself.  Poor bank teller Brian tried to save with day by pressing the silent alarm only to be shot and killed.  Good times.  I can't find the vids knurph made for me of that.  Dang it all.

death note has plot twists that would be right at home in a major motion picture.

It's nice for a change to not be able to guess what will happen next.

I found Death Note to be a lot smarter than a lot of anime, kinda in a Paranoid Agent kind of way.

I've become a Negi x Nodoka fan here.. fuck Asuna. Those two are just too cute.
Negima stop motion with toys
Kinda cool, but would be cooler if they actually had voices so I knew who was talking.

Oh, and I gave up on Love Hina a while ago. I got tired of seeing the main humor element of it being the male character getting his ass kicked by every girl on the show for dumb reasons. There's NO excuse for violence against nerdy anime males.

I'm also watching Claymore (demons, vampires, fantasy, shit like that) and that reminds me that I have to download some more of that...and I've also seen some of Code Geass (giant robots, evil empire, people revolting against empire) which is pretty sweet.

Paranoid Agent got on my goddamn nerves.  It had ripples of sheer greatness and brilliance mixed with ones of absolute boredom and dullness, and then you find out about the fucking dog and that slimefest comes along all "WTF".  Ruined.  Someone needs to go to Japan and teach them how to make endings.

PA  and Wolf's Rain are what made me spoil myself before watching all of Trinity Blood - since I'd only seen a few random fantapes, I Wiki'd the synopsis before I committed 26 Saturdays to something that would make me want to throw a pint glass through the screen at the end.

For all of DBZ's faults, it ended well.  We'll just ignore DBGT for the sake of this argument.  :P  I thought Samurai Champloo concluded brilliantly.

And X-Files with poor Brian gasping on the floor!  How could I forget that?!  ;D
