I find the character designs of 2040 rancid. Old school Bubblegum was best Bubblegum. Best music, superior cutey Priss with superior seiyuu, best songs. I watched some of 2040 and if it were it's own thing, I probably wouldn't find it completely terrible. Next to OG Bubblegum it's just bleh. I could only run it as background fodder. I do like the opening song of 2040 tho'.

It's not so much the designs for me than it is that digipaint stuff being getting harder and harder to go back and watch. It's a chore to watch Excel Saga, and I loved that one, all because of the way they produced it. It just doesn't hold up.

BTW, don't bother with Bubblegum Crash, either.

I forgot that I had started the second season of The Seven Deadly Sins, but none of my regular subbers was doing it. Found a source and am pulling it again. It's shounen, but it's good shounen.

It's always an ordeal for me to start picking new shows. I know 7DS (which I just mentioned) continues through Spring as does Darling in the FranXX, but several of my longer term shows (DBS, Garo, and Ancient Magus Bride) are over after next week. I've got some catching up to do on Lupin before I watch the new one. I'm glad to see Food Wars returning, as it has been fairly consistent in its entertainment value, and this season should have a pretty big cross-up if what I've read is true. And, holy crap, there's another High School DxD? Sexcellente!

But, beyond continuing anime I'm already invested in, I may shift a bit to my recorded live action stuff and catch up on this past seasons' SHIELD, Flash, and the Marvel Netflix stuff I've ignored for over a year.

I happened to catch a DBS stream and, the fuck, there's a gold Freeza and about three different characters were rockin' tracksuits. Also Masako Nozawa REALLY sounds like an old woman now. I know some people felt she already sounded that way, but it's jarring now. I mean, she's, like, 81 years old so at least she's still ticking. Ryo Horikawa legit sounds like he fucked up his throat and that dude's twenty years younger than Nozawa, so, uh, keep rocking it, grandma.

As for the new shit... meh, maybe GeGeGe no Kitaro. I've always been curious about that series and I know they make a new one, like, every ten years. So maybe I can test the waters with the newish one. I'll have to see if anything else manages to stand out. Fate Last Encore or whatever was a bust. What a boring piece of crap. Don't know if I'll finish Darling in the Franxx and Ancient Magus. Saw most of this thing called Aico on Netflix but didn't pay enough attention to it to know if I actually liked it or not. It wasn't total shit, I can tell you that much.

Pop Team Epic will leave a void in my soul that no new show could ever fill when it ends next week. I'll probably just watch the "rebroadcast" versions, since some of the bits I've seen seem to be pretty different.

Can't find any GeGeGe no Kitaro. I guess the lack of boobs, lasers, and waifus makes it too dull for any subbing group to tackle. Best I found was one of the movies. Not terrible but not fantastic either. Still kept me entertained though. Had Wataru Takagi as Nezumi Otoko and I love me some Wataru Takagi. That guy's the shit.

I did NOT know that the new Full Metal Panic! was airing this Spring, so that's a shoe-in. Sadly it's only 12 episodes, but I've read that if it sells well enough they'll do a follow-up season to close the book on the series as it currently stands in the light novel realm.

Also, the Cutey Honey Universe show might warrant a pull, but I already nipped the last Go Nagai show in the bud (the recent Devilman), so who knows?

I was re-reading some of the Junji Ito's stuff and I swear the day I re-read Slug Girl, Merla just spontaneously gifts me socks with snails on them and I was kinda freaked.

I haven't been watching much of anything tho' anime-wise. The places I used to stream at are overrun with ads and I'm feeling kinda lazy in terms of hunting down some new haunts.

I usually head-hunt subbers via myanimelist.net or troll the usual suspects and download from them (generally speaking from nyaa.si). When done I throw them on Plex for later viewing.

Something I didn't realize going in, Megalobox is a near-future/sci-fi re-imagining of Ashita no Joe, and I'm way into that. I'm usually not a sports anime guy, but the technology angle grabs me.

First episode of GeGeGe looked really nice, I'll be curious to see if that holds up. Toei is notorious for their wildly fluctuating animation quality, even in their recent popular stuff like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball.

Fist of the Blue Sky is a CG nightmare. Holy shit. Something I've noticed about a lot of Japanese television CG, the motion is often noticeably jerky, almost as if it's missing frames. I don't know how else to describe it.

FMP! is a fun franchise, though, particularly the first two releases. Second Raid was good but intense and therefore less fun, but it's been so long since that one I'm shocked they're doing a fourth...13 years is a long time to let a franchise sit.

I remember watching it, but mostly for how the male and female leads played off one another. Didn't give a good God damn about the mecha/military aspect.

Mahou Shoujo Site seems to be about a website that grants magical girl powers to abused young women, so that they can murder their assailants. It's uncomfortable as hell and I'm genuinely surprised Japan allows this gruesome shit on television.

Hinamatsuri, on the other hand, is a sitcom about a telekinetic girl living with a yakuza and the ensuing hijinks. It's cute and funny and recommended!

I watched a bit of The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. on Netflix and was surprised to find it was actually funny. I dunno, I just didn't think it would be. Like most Japanese humor, it's best to stick to the sub. I put it on the dub because I wanted to leave the tv on while I was doing some cleaning but the dub was so bland and humorless. It's passable but I don't think dubs can really translate humor without doing a Shinesman style dub or something.

Yeah, that put me off as well. Some real Neo Yokio looking piece of shit from the cover art. The character designs won't win any prizes. I honestly was just looking for something to watch for 20 minutes while I waited for a show on regular tv. I realized by episode 3 I had forgotten all about the other show I meant to watch.

I watched some of the Darling in the Franxx dub. Like four episodes of it. I really like it. The job they did dubbing it, I mean. I LOVE the voice they gave Hiro. Like someone said, "hey, not all of our anime protags need to have whiny helium-tinged bitch voices like we gave Edward Elric and Kirito." Dub Hiro actually sounds like his balls dropped.

I watched Aggretsuko on Netflix. Not Saiki-level funny in the least but enjoyable and chuckle-worthy. The English dub is quite decent. I want more of it.

Yeah, I've watched up to episode 15 of Saiki, and my laughter is becoming infrequent. Maybe it'll pick up again, maybe it's run out of steam. I'll probably watch the rest anyway.

Aggretsuko is cute, but the humor mostly just makes me smile. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose.

Oh yeah, I watched the first episode of Last Period, seems to be yet another fantasy anime structured after fantasy video games, but the real standout thing about it is the team of "villains", who get top billing in the show's credits:
