"She has blonde hair, blue eyes, and nearly transparent white skin..."  I think they mean "nearly luminescent."  Because "nearly transparent" is the trappings of a horror anime.  But, meh...

So I'm checking out the dub of Aoharu x Kinkanju and it's a mixed bag.  I can tell that whoever casted this was trying to cast actors contrary to how we're used to hearing them.  Usually, we'd get Monica Rial as the lead girl's screechy bestie and Chris Patton as the antagonist or something, but here Monica Rial plays the masculine female lead and Chris Patton plays one of her soft spoken friends.  They do a decent enough job but the jury's still out on the dude playing the lead guy.  Sometimes he sounds cool but then other times he sounds lifeless.  The problem is that the lead guy is supposed to be a naturally charming and charismatic host character.  Think Vic Bologna as Tamaki in Ouran Host Club.  Playing that kind of guy without any sense of fun doesn't work.  The Japanese actor is the same guy who played Naotsugu in Log Horizon and he set the bar damn high.  This dub actor doesn't reach it.

The real miss here though is my nemesis: fucking Greg Ayres.  He's playing Midori, the friendly but secretly sadistic antagonist.  I was prepared to give him a chance but it doesn't work.  He sounds fucking twelve.  The only thing more jarring than Greg Ayres as Midori is Dante Basco as young General Iroh in the Legend of Korra.  Like, I feel for these guys because they're men and they sound like prepubescent boys but, yeah, it doesn't work.  Like, shit, get Josh Grelle or Johnny Yong Bosch.  Or, hell, switch Chris Patton and Greg Ayres.  It wouldn't have that creative casting angle but Chris Patton can play this type of character fuckin' easy.  It's a pity.  Midori's an important character and him being fucked up like this messes with all of the tense scenes.

Now... Yuri on Ice.  Ay-yi-yi-yi.  That ending.  They gave the immature, shitty character the gold medal the lead was trying to win.  This makes no narrative sense.  There's nothing in the story that makes us want to see Yuri P. win over Yuri K.  I don't dislike Yuri P. but I felt like he needed to do more to earn the elation of the viewer.  I can't be happy for him.  This just screams "this show's a bigger hit than we thought it'd be so let's stretch out another season by not letting out protagonist win."  The whole "young upstart Russian takes gold" combined with the Chanflation of JJ's score to win bronze over Otabek's flawless performances just made this feel all too real.  Part of the reason it's hard for me to see real world gymnastics and figure skating competitions is that you see people getting screwed over like this all the time.  Does my anime have to do that, too?  I would've been happier to see Yuri K. win gold and have it end here than to get this.  This just casts a shadow over the entire show.  They better deliver an awesome season two to wash this shit outta my mouth.

I finally got around to the second season of Kimi ni Todoke.  I mean, I like the characters, I do.  And it IS following the manga and all... it's just... I'm getting tired of the bullshit drama between the two leads.  S1 ended with both of them taking a big step forward and progressing towards a relationship and then in S2 it's like they were pushed a mile backwards.  S2 could've been so cute if it were about them dating and learning how to be a couple together.  Instead there's tears.  A bunch of fuckin' tears.  A bunch of blushing.  A bunch of "lemme hide my eyes AND my feelings."  It's really tiresome and disappointing.  I don't hate S2 or anything but, yeah, just really disappointing.

Watched part one of The Ancient Magus’ Bride: Those Awaiting a Star.  I wish I had waited.  I already knew this is a 3-part ova where each one is bundled with the manga but I didn't realize the other parts were spaced out like they are.  Part 2 won't be out until March and Part 3 until September.  Argh.  I like this so far.  It's almost Ghibli-esque with the whole "unseen magical world of wonders" aspect, which I really dig.  There's something a little bland and dull about the main character.  She reminds me of a more traumatized, child-like knock-off of Shirayuki from Snow White with the Red Hair.  But at the same time, I commend the show for still making me feel for this character's plight.  I hope we get an entire series of this.

I watched some of Hozuki Coolheadedness and feel like I'm really missing a lot here.  Like cultural nuances that would make everything funnier.  Still getting some laughs from it though.  And how many shows have Satan running away screaming "Oh my God!" in Engrish?

Re-watching the Princess Jellyfish dub.  Over time, really liking the ending less and less every time I see it because it's a tacked on, anime only ending when the manga is still ongoing.

Ha ha, yeah.  The sex scenes were really done as an after thought tho'.  There's just one per girl.  You can remove them and nothing is lost.  But yeah.  Just saw a convo in the comments section elsewhere about that very point.  The series certainly likes to keep the female characters looking barely pubescent.  So there's...

Fate/Grand Order: First Order (Special)

Fate/Apocrypha (TV Series)

Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel (Movie Trilogy)

Fate/Extra: Last Encore (TV Series)

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya (Movie)

I wish they'd go ahead and start the new season. I freaking downloaded Love Hina blurays this weekend, and now I can't believe I did something like that.

The faces and the uniforms kinda put me off.  I'm not sure why.  Maybe cause the faces look a bit derpy and the uniforms a touch Nazi.

Oh yeah, I finished watching Diamond Is Unbreakable. So fucking good. Now it'll probably be a year or more wait until Vento Aureo. I can only tide myself over by trying to get back into JoJolion, but it hasn't grabbed me yet.

Really, really looking forward to Steel Ball Run, but that's years away, I'm sure.

Watching Little Witch Academia Ep 1.  Still a very cute and precious show.  Unfortunately, it has the earmarks of a concept being stretched out.  I found myself getting a smidge bored.  I had no problems with the longer Shiny Chariot sequence or her arriving in the town.  But after Akko meets Lotte, it starts to drag a tiny bit.

Courtesy space in case you want to go into unspoiled...

She should've reached the school sooner.  Or had Sucy fuck around with her some more before reaching the leyline thingamagig.  She gets Shiny Rod way too damn early in my opinion.  I wanted her to find it later on in the dungeon.  Her finding it now is the like her finding it in the first five minutes of the short film.  Professor Ursula also shows up too early imo.  This ep should've focused on her forming her friendships with Lotte and Sucy and escaping the cockatrice in the forest.  All in all, not a terrible complaint.  Just that the pacing feels off.  Depending on how the rest of the series plays out, introducing Shiny Rod and Prof. Ursula in the first ep might've been necessary.  We'll see.  Still giving it high marks tho'.

Edit: She just "teleported" using Shiny Arc.  Feels a bit like a rip off.  Just have Ursula teleport them.  That seems more feasible right now.

So... rewatched some of Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works and it's a pity.  It's really a pity.  I really, really love the first episode.  Technically Episode 0 and not episode 1.  It's such a beautiful, perfect thing.  It's fuckin' perfect.  It sets an other-worldly magical tone that pulls you in.  It gives you tantalizing hints of lore.  If you've never seen a Fate show in your life, it sets it all up so wonderfully.  There's all sorts of little things that make you see Rin as a person.  It's the most absolutely perfect calm-before-the-storm beginning any show could've asked for.  You feel for Rin and want to root for her.  The magic is suspenseful.  The fight between Lancer and Archer doesn't age well.  It's just a bunch of shitty weapon-clanking and CGI sparks flying.  But it's bolstered by this fantastic episode.  Lancer chasing Rin and Rin using magic to escape is actually a much better scene than the actual fight between servants.  And that ending where you get a glimpse of Saber.  It's perfect.

And...

...then the show's all "heh, but this is about Shirou and his ideeeeeeeeeeeeeals."  While it was interesting to see the same events in Episode 0 from his perspective in Episode 1, he's like a bag of rusty nails.  What this show should've done is play up everyone else.  Give us all of their stories.  What are Kirei and Gil doing right now?  What is Caster's story?  Show her getting Assassin.  Where's Ilya?  How has she dealt without Daddy.  Instead, Caster and Ilya's shit gets shoehorned into spots later in the series like an afterthought.  Shit, show, give us Lancer's original master Bazett preparing for the Grail War, getting Lancer, coming to Fuyuki.  I mean, there's this wonderful backstory where Bazett always wanted to get Cu as Lancer because she wanted to save him and then she's betrayed by Kirei, a man she admired, and has Lancer stolen from her.  The fuck didn't they show us that?  Like, why, because it wasn't in the damn VN?  They treated Kirei being alive later on like it's a huge shock but there's no shock value anymore.  Anyone not familiar with the material outside of F/Z must've been so fuckin' confused to just have him killed like he is and then to have Shirou fight Gil instead of Saber fighting him.

I know it's Shirou's story but that angle doesn't work for the animated adaptation.  The show gets so bogged down trying to be like the VN so we get people standing around TALKING for entire episodes just like you would get in a visual novel.  UGH.

There's this one scene later in the series, the one where Lancer helps Rin and dies.  It's broken up into like six or seven segments in two different episodes.  I may just dl the episodes and edit it into one sequence.  Anytime something interesting or suspenseful occurs in this show, the show cuts up the scene brutally.  And then, hilariously enough, this show wastes time with extra talking but doesn't tell the viewer useful info.  Like when Lancer doesn't die right away, it just looks like an asspull.  But it's not an asspull.  He actually has a skill that enables him to not die right away.  Would've been a cool thing for the show to explain to the casual viewer.

tl;dr - big honkin' Fate rant.  Loved Unlimited Blade Works ep 0 and the rest goes straight downhill.

Saw another trailer about a big green dragon that turns into a cutesy maid with fat tits.

For instance, the maid's hanging out laundry, and it clouds up to rain. So she transforms back into a dragon to blast fire at the clouds so the sun will come out. It sounds stupid, but the visual is pretty funny.

Yeah, Merla and I loved that anime.  Too bad it was only four eps.  It should've been a series.  I think she shipped herself with Leon.

And I'm sticking with Youjo Senki for now.  I'm still not sure if I actually like it but then I think "at least it's not new Voltron."  So now I'm watching that one, Little Witch Academia, and, ahem, now that dragon maid show.  I didn't think I'd care for it for a bevy of reasons, but it still manages to be very amusing.  Also, although it made a chuckle-worthy gag, no way is that dragon a D-cup.  She's too busty for her tiny frame.  She's pushing F or higher for sure.  Educational link :)

Oh, oh yeah, and I just saw something super trippy.  Not a series or anything, but some weird experimental shit called Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space.  Like, I legit felt like I needed to be smoking a bunch of weed while watching this and I don't even do that shit.

I saw a version with subs, just linking so you get an idea of this shit.  The trailer does not do it justice.

Oh crap only 4? I wonder if the ending is like the manga. I haven't finished yet so no way for me to chell without spoilers. Yeah Leon was a qt, something about that little pony tail.
Was it like a 25 min ep, or more like an OAV?

I think it was like a miniseries.  The last episode concludes far before the ending of the manga.  Seemed like they just picked out a few stories and adapted them.

The recent use of Great Saiyaman was interesting. I always hated that they basically turned Gohan into a second-tier character.

So like what they already did to a bunch of the others, right?

I forgot about Scum's Wish this season so while I now have the available eps, I'll probably have to wait a day or two to watch them and see if I like this.

_________________

Making note to myself that another ep of Scum's Wish will be out and to also try Kubikiri Cycle: Aoiro Savant to Zaregototsukai.  Because I'm forgetful like that.  Also Youjo Senki's getting simul-dubbed, so I wanna chell that out, too.
