That's what Merla does with her movies.  I can't bring myself to do that just yet.  I'm too attached to packaging.  I could barely make myself throw out cheap packaging for my bootleg copy of Toradora... even though I have long since purchased the legit Bluray/DVD combo copy of Toradora.  Most of my movies are actually in books but then I file away all of the packaging in a cardboard box, tape that up, and store it in the shed.  Because I think "well, if I want to sell these movies later, I should keep the packaging."

I started Yuri!!! on Ice.  Ha ha, no, Japan.  Exclamation points don't work that way.  Only got through the first ep so far.  The skating looks beautiful but that ending was mucho gay.  At least this show's not in denial about its audience.

I started with Love Live, the show about school girls becoming idols to save their school. And achieve fame. It's actually cute. About to start the second season. It's not as good as Sound! Euphonium, but not much is lately. That's the show about the high school band that wants to play in the nationals. And achieve fame.

Watched more Yuri and it's going really gay, but that's cool.  I'm totally shipping Yuri K. x Victor now so whatever.

Kinda pissed right now. I bought the Escaflowne box set years ago. Now they've re-released it in Bluray along with a new English track. Being perfectly fine with the original Ocean dub, I figured, what the heck, I'll download the HD version, rip the audio off my old set, and splice them together to have HD with a voice track for non-weeaboos without putting down substantial change on a new and not necessarily well-received dub effort. Wouldn't you know it: they re-edited the video, so if I do it I'll have to cut up the original vocal track to match, which is a major headache.

Still not buying it again.

Yeah, the whole re-edit thing was their excuse for the re-dub.

When was the last time a new anime really blew you away? Like, just knocked you on your ass with how awesome it was.

I feel like that used to happen to me a lot. And then less and less as time went by. Is it because anime gets worse all the time? Or is it because they're basically just retelling stories that have already been told, and I feel like I've seen it all?

I can still watch a show and enjoy it, but nothing grabs me anymore.

I just figured it comes with being older.  It's more and more difficult to really provide that kind of experience.  For a minute, I thought Fate/Stay Night UBW might provide some of that a couple of seasons back.  That Lancer/Saber fight looked beautiful and the Rin and Shirou episodes at the beginning were the set-up of something epic.  But then it just failed to deliver.  They should've just remade the older FSN anime with better animation and bigger budget music, improved some of the plot points to stay consistent with the visual novel, and called it a day.  Would've been the perfect Fate/Zero sequel instead of what we got.  (And I know it's heresy to call it a "sequel" but whatev.  That's what it was to the average anime viewer who has no other connection to that franchise.)

Aldnoah.Zero also gave me a bit of those mind-blown feels early but then proceeded to walk around the room and take all of the feels back.  That was a shame too because it had nearly all the framework: awesome music, good-looking animation, decent voice talent, a space war, awesome and interesting tech, would-be star-crossed lovers, a dastardly multi-layered plot of deception, and an array of supporting characters.  I have to say "nearly" though because that piece of hardy plank they called the MC was unforgivable and the show falling apart really revolves around him.  Would've preferred Slaine as the MC because more of the story belonged with him and not with the other guy.  Wow, I can't even remember the MC's name either.  What a forgettable piece of shit.

Now onto what I'm watching...

I'm on episode 10 of Kiss Him Not Me and this show's weakness is becoming more apparent.  The MC already has four guys and a chick vying for her affection, she doesn't need to add an older brother of one of those guys.  I know it's not really the fault of the anime because this is a manga plot point but the show really shines when it's about the four primary suitors finding out, dealing and coming to terms with the MC's various fujoshi/fangirl quirks.  Once the focus pulls away from that, it's just boring romcom slice-of-life samey-samey bullshit.  I wish the MC was less oblivious and more devious, using these guys' affections for her to fulfill her own dude x dude fantasies.  That would be hilarious.  But instead she has to be all "por que?  quien?  YO?" and bat her eyelashes innocently every time these guys go out of their way for her like she has no idea what's going on or what their motivations could be.  And I'm tired of her needing to be saved all the time.  It was cool and funny when her suitors jump her harassers at the school festival, especially when the MC's frustrations revealed that her suitors were actually also harassing her in a sense and they had to tone it down.  But then we get photog creeper, then beach bum would-be rapists, and now skeevy nii-san.  Meh.  There's probably only a couple of eps left so I guess I'll stick it out.

Ep 10 of Yuri on Ice also ramped things up in a big way.  I'm hoping this ends happily and the show doesn't pull the rug out from under me.  I need this one to end with good feels.

I also started and "finished" Boys Over Flowers.  "Finished" is in quotes because after 30-plus episodes, I just skipped to the last ep (#51, sheesh) and felt nothing of value was lost.  This show is similar to Kaiji where you really have to sift through to find a negative review.  There's a lot of positive buzz and loads of live-action remakes and shit.  I suspect--with this being a 20 yr old anime--nostalgia's a factor.  MAL reviewers gave this a bunch of 10s and this show is no 10 by a mile.  It's shojo show about a poor high school girl after she confronts a clique of rich assholes known as the F4.  I'm assuming F4 stands for "fuck these 4 fucking assholes."

It uses a bunch of love tropes straight outta the old Harlequin books: like the MC's being too gullible and easily forgiving people who wrong her horribly.  Two women characters are presented as being kind-hearted role models but they easily hand-wave the violence of the F4 all "oh, those boys," which made me hate both of them even though it's obvious the audience is supposed to love them and think they're such cool ladies.  The primary love interest is an abusive asshole who fails to experience any real contrition nor has any respect for her personal boundaries.  I wanted the MC to just tell abusive asshole she can't love him because he's a violent abuser and then see that character try and change for the better, but that shit never happens.  At one point, the MC's kidnapped and it turns out it's people who want revenge against abusive asshole because abusive asshole beat them up aka he abused them.  Abusive asshole is so violent, he nearly killed someone's little brother with a kick to the stomach and so that someone masterminded this revenge plot.  Abusive asshole appears and lets himself get beaten up for MC's sake.  Then asshole's asshole friends reveal in the hospital that (on the orders of abusive asshole) they beat up and shaved harassers in retaliation and it's played off for laughs.  Except these four twat-queefs started this shit in the first place.  If they hadn't been beating people up for shits and giggles to begin with, the MC and asshole never would've been kidnapped and beaten.

Oh, oh, and earlier in the story, abusive asshole tried to use his family's money (because of course he's rich) to get MC and one of his own friends expelled.  This whole plot then spiraled into some 3-on-3 basketball game shit where MC had to win to avoid expulsion.  Asshole then quits mid-game and the MC's all "WOW.  He quit the game and saved us from expulsion."  No, he didn't save you, you stupid bitch.  The entire situation was HIS DOING IN THE FIRST PLACE.  Like, I don't get to poison someone, then rush him to the hospital and claim I saved him.

So annoyed, I think, because this one could've been saved.  It had some potential in the set up and the characters.  The first few episodes bring you into the plot but then it fails on so many fronts.

Edit - Holy shit, I wrote I fuckin' novel.   :poo:

I read all of that, but I can't really comment because I haven't seen any of it.

I was super excited for the return of Berserk, but that ended up pretty disappointing, mostly because of the garbage animation. I know I should just accept that anime is never going to look how I want it to look, especially with budgets as slight as they are these days, but I can't get past it.

Kemonozume
Mononoke (TV series)

Those were the last two shows to truly enthrall me. Neither have ever been officially localized, which sucks, because I would really like to own them.

So is anyone here watching the new Dragon Ball? I started right on ep 1 and then I couldn't watch anymore because of a busy schedule. But yesterday i saw some parts of the newest episode in which they all play Baseball and it was super funny (Yamcha makes an appearance, Vegeta gets a little jealous, and the ending was hilarious).

I was expecting this from Eva 3.33 but unfortunately it was a different kind of blown away. More like " what the fuck just happened" during every minute of the movie.
Hopefully the 4th part will be better :(

Anno is just being a little bitch about it, crying and saying he will quit every other month. Oh and totally milking that Godzilla + Eva combo. I went to the Eva store (now in Ikebukuro and like 4 times smaller than the first one) and half of it was of Godzilla fighting Eva 1.0 merch.

There have been shows that I've really enjoyed, but none I would say are consequential. I haven't found anything that captures the imagination like Evangelion did back in the day.

I was gonna say I've never heard of Kemonozume but I recognized stills from a google image search.  Never saw it though.  I never saw Mononoke either even though I always meant to.  I mean, I saw Ayakashi and I recall trying to follow up on that and see Mononoke, but I don't remember what turned me off and made me not see things through.

I'm also making a short list of anime on my shitty blog.  I've completed the entries for 3/5 so far.  I'd say those are the ones that came close to blowing me away as far as what I viewed in the last few years.  Just in the unexpected level of enjoyment I got.  I mean, I expect to like things like FMA: Brotherhood and One Punch Man, so those could never blow me away.  But I never thought I'd have any interest in a show featuring Japanese mahjong (a game that looks confusing as fuck) or baseball (a sport I never gave a shit about).  To me, a show that can draw me in and make me care about things I never had interest in is cool.  If I were thirteen or fifteen or something and seeing something like FMA: Brotherhood, maybe then I could talk about how blown away I was by that show.  But nah.  The only show that really blew me away was DBZ back when I was a teenager.*  I don't think any other anime was ever able to duplicate those feels in the twenty years since.  Not even the Miyazaki stuff.  On that note...

...nope.  Although I might chell out that baseball episode.

* I think the only things that have come close since are non-anime things.  Like the first Matrix movie and the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.  Now that every other movie's trying to be the Matrix and LotR, I just get really pissed off now.   Shit, it's been well over a decade since those came out and nothing since then comes to mind.  Could've been Pac Rim if that movie could've finagled a better story than what we got.  Should've been BvS.  But those are other conversations, I suppose.

Man... I totally forgot about One Punch Man. That's just sad. Time to get my head checked. That and Mob Psycho 100 were great.

I really enjoyed One Punch Man and Mob Psycho 100, but neither made a huge impression on me.  They are actually pretty forgettable shows imo, probably because their lead characters don't stand out at all.  It's like the Japanese version of the Superman syndrome (where people complain Superman's boring even though I really liked Supes in STAS).  Like if DBZ never had Piccolo or Vegeta in it for Goku to play off of.  Then again, that's still not a fair comparison because Goku's a bubbly kook of a guy with a lust for fighting while Saitama and Mob are just "meh" about it most of the time.  Anyway, I'm more hopeful for a potential MP100 S2 because he sorta has a Team Mob thing going on now since Dimple, Teruki and, uh, his brother (ha ha, forgot his name) make a nice little group with Mob and Reigen.  As for OPM, Saitama's current claim to fame now is constantly being pitted against Superman or Goku.  I really like Genos but too often Genos is like a second straight man when he needs to be more manic like, say, Sonic (probably too extreme) or even Metal Bat.  I don't even like Sonic but he creates better conflict and chaos grouped with Saitama than Genos does.

I think you mentioned this before, I don't recall if it was concerning anime specifically or just fiction in general, but it was as if all the adult characters had disappeared, and everyone is a kid or teenager these days. Anime is overwhelmingly like that. I remember there used to be so many shows that could be classified as hard sci-fi, stuff like Witch Hunter Robin, Speed Grapher, Ergo Proxy, etc., where the vast majority of the characters were adult and the whole point was to tell a compelling story. I just don't see anything like that anymore.

Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but I miss that kind of stuff. There was always this divide between super-serious action/drama, and then your typical cookie-cutter cutesy drivel, and it feels like the latter has unequivocally won out. Or at least, all the cutesy crap has leeched its way into everything else, making it all seem utterly homogeneous.

Yeah, I'm sick of kids.  Nearly everything has to surround a protag of high school age.  Most of the time, even when I find a show about and mostly casted with adult characters, we're talking young adults in their early twenties.  As if people don't have a wealth of adventure and life experiences past age 25.

And in so many shows, you don't even need the characters to be youngish.  Goliath from Gargoyles was an adult.  Scrooge McDuck was fuckin' old.  I'm pretty sure Bugs Bunny is a grown-ass rabbit.  Batman's not a kid.  Inspector Gadget wasn't a kid.  Sheriff Bravestarr's not a kid.  Not anime but still... it's like how they're keeping Spider-Man in high school in every animated and movie adaptation in the last eighteen years.  Stop it.  What about the adventures of adult Spidey?  I'd like to see how a 30 or 40 year old Peter juggles spider powers.  But, like, whatever.

If you don't mind the figure skating and the homo, Yuri on Ice is quite good.  Yuri K., the main character, is 23 and the other MC, Victor, is 27.

Was it on purpose that those two heads are rubbing against each other?  :D  Anyway, Yuri on Ice's actually done in a "sweeter" way than BL/yaoi/shounen-ai or whatever.  Granted, I haven't seen a lot of BL titles--Gakuen Heaven, Kirepapa, Mirage of Blaze--but the relationships tend to have this creepy, fetishy feel to them.  Or you get queerbait like Free.  But Yuri on Ice is a sports anime featuring romance and fan service in it.  It just so happens that the romance is gay and the fan service is dudes.  (Yuri's fam owns an onsen, so that helps.)  Yuri and Victor are adults and genuinely like one another and it's done very nicely.  It doesn't feel skeevy at all.  It really is a refreshing title.  I'd love to get more gay anime done in this style.

Also, Yuri on Ice gave birth to this, which I do to Merla randomly.  "JJ Style!"

Blame it on the weird preoccupation the Japanese have with youth.

I'd say the West has that as well.  That's how we get people who think Maggie Gyllenhaal's too old for Liam Neeson.  But, yeah, Japaneseeses love their high school kid protags.

Most certainly, and they are also meant to represent the condition known as Blue Balls.

Because there's only gonna be 12 eps of Yuri on Ice.  That's the joke.  :stickdance:

I don't think I could revisit Mob this soon. It's been a long time since I've watched a dub of anything.

Actually, I started watching Madoka in English until I smacked myself on the forehead and switched the audio to Japanese.

I don't think I could revisit Mob this soon. It's been a long time since I've watched a dub of anything.

Really?  I like it.  There's only one ep available anyway and it's being released at the rate of one a week, so there's no way to burn out on it.

But yeah, I get you.  Kiss Him, Not Me's dub is kinda taking liberties I don't agree with and rewriting some of the jokes.  My best guess is they were having problems trying to fit dialogue into scenes or something.  But that doesn't explain away taking away lines entirely.  There's a scene in one ep where one of the characters gets angry at this chick and he yells out her name all "Niiii-shi-NA!"  Like, just the way he's saying it is fuckin' hilarious.  The dub actor completely skips it.  Like, there's no dialogue at all even though there's space for it.  What stings is the dub actor's doing a pretty good job of portraying the character.  It's not even his fault.  It's the direction and whoever's adapting the script.  Like, damn.  Why do dat?

I'm rewatching Magi: Legend of Sinbad on Netflix now that there's a dub.  Well, half of it anyway.  Because teen Sinbad >>>>>> kid Sinbad.

I can't decide if I like Giant Killing or not.  I've only gotten through a few eps but I'm just not sure.

Looked it up. Looks like... soccer? I've got to admit, sports anime is something I've never gelled with.

What I've been doing for a while now, is going here and deciding what interests me based purely at face value. Well, I also read the plot description. More often than not I'll download entire series and then never get around to watching them, but that's fine. Sometimes good stuff turns up.

Out of those currently there, this stands out to me most. I mean, it's only promotional art, which is often, if not always, misleading, but I'll chell it out anyway.
