I would say Excel Saga fits that bill as well.

The Excel Saga anime was a completely different beast than the manga. That's why every episode had the Rikudo disclaimer at the beginning...which I understand the manga-ka went on to regret. But based on my reading of it, the anime was an unequivocal improvement on the original material.

What I saw of Cromartie was funny, but it got old quickly. I don't remember finishing it.

I have a review of Kare Kano here that I wrote twelve years ago (had to update the formatting...that's going to be a real chore on the other ones). The show had some problems, mainly in how slavish it was to the manga. Because they started before there was enough manga to fill out the season, they wound up with over twice the typical recap eps to stretch it out. In fact, that's why Anno left the production before the end. But it's still one of the few anime titles that I can say I really love.

I have like 17 volumes of the Excel Saga manga. I was buying it as it came out and mostly not reading it, I just figured it was a sure thing considering how much I enjoyed the anime. I don't even know how much of it I eventually got through, but I do remember perpetually waiting for it to get good.

Actually, I have an entire wall of anime and manga I've barely touched, because I had been hoarding it for years and then suddenly lost interest. Such a waste.

I see Mindgame is on Netflix. You guys watch that? It was weird but good.

You should try watching it. Definitely not a waste.

I binged the second half of Attack on Titan, which I had been sitting on for... well, however long AoT has been around. So intense! Had goosebumps for a lot of that Female Titan stuff.

I almost convinced myself it was someone else, since it was so obviously her, but nope, it was just her.

Yeah, that was intense.  It's been a while since I've been that excited watching something.  I unfortunately marathoned a good portion of it around the time the show was winding down so I had to watch the last two or three episodes week by week which was painful.  I really enjoyed AoT when I first watched it but over time I've felt the air deflating out of it without S2.  It's been two years now and the next season's tentative date is April 2017.  Argh.  Will I still care then?  The dub would've given the show a bit of new life for me but it's got frickin' Pappenbrook in it as Eren.

Speaking of VAs, I was excited to finally see the Overlord dub cast.  I don't recognize ANY of them.  I've never been so happy to look at a list of dub actors and not know what any of them sound like from name alone.  No Sabat, no Rial, no Haberkorn, no J. Michael Tatum, no Vic Bologna, and no Ayers brothers to give me seizures.  Of course, they could be extras but I don't care about extras.

I downloaded the entire first season a while back but never really got on board to watch it. It just sounds like one of those relentlessly depressing shows, and I hate that crap.

It's mostly super bleak, but as a direct result, anytime the heroes manage to accomplish something it's that much more badass and uplifting.

Couldn't EVA be classified as "relentlessly depressing"? Isn't that one of your favorites?

To me it feels less depressing and more suspenseful like one really long horror-mystery movie.  Shit goes down, but the characters are only given so much time to dwell on it before they have to move on for the sake of their own survival.  And as unsure as I am about  my continued interest in the franchise, all that jumping around shit they do with their gear is still really, really cool.  Or you could just go for the poor man's Attack on Titan: Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress.

I stumbled on Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash but I'm not sticking with it.  I can't do shows with ridiculous fan service anymore.  I know this one is mild in comparison to other offenders, but no.  There's a significant difference between the female (and mostly adult) characters in something like Overlord who are in control of their own bodies and how they present themselves versus Grimgar's need to continually sexualize weak, scared little girls in scenes where it detracts from the serious, sad, and/or tense mood the show attempts to otherwise present.  Or even in scenes where they do innocent activities like eat or bend over.  The one girl putting a crossbody bag on and letting the strap sit in between her damn cans made me facepalm.  And lots of "let me sit down in this short outfit and show the backs of my thighs all the damn time even though my character is so damn shy."  (The non-shy one also does that same annoying pose but at least it feels more natural to her personality.)  And then the MC gets a trainer wearing straps with her tits hanging out (not hyperbole, the bottoms of the tits are exposed) and calling it an outfit.  She twists her body like a friggin snake.  It's all dialed up to nine, presumably because she's an adult or at least older than the main characters anyway.  Call it nitpickerery if you like but it killed the immersion for me.  MC and his buds were also too generic imo.  On second thought, maybe the fan service was an attempt to detract from all the cardboard.  It angers me Tomokazu Seki's voice talent was wasted in this schlock.

I picked that one up, but I got two episodes in and realized it was boring as crap. Fanservice can't fix dull.

I liked the whole concept they seemed to be going for: no memories in an rpg-type world and then—kinda a spoiler

—or maybe not since you dropped it anyway—

their leader dies and the rest of the team has to deal.  But it also seemed like he died for a stupid reason: healed every little wound and ran out of mana or whatever when it came time to heal his own.  Now that I think about it though, the character designs on the whole were kinda shitty and dull.  Like telling some kid "design within the rpg-archetypes but don't get too creative."  And while I liked the little I saw of Brittany in terms of personality, I don't know what they were thinking with his skimpy outfit.

I'm watching Aoharu x Kikanjuu.  It's similar to Ouran in that "beautiful, blonde, quirky host develops odd interest in younger, more serious, high schooler MC that looks and acts like a guy so host-guy thinks she's a dude but she's a chick."  And one of the friend group (in the manga, anyway) reminds of one of the Hitachin twins in looks, temperament, and the fact that he IS a twin.  But the similarity ends there and it delves into a plot about the MC and her new pals' love for survival games with realistic toy guns.  And I like they're not a high school club.  Her friends are adults: the host guy is an actual host and her other new friend is an amusingly odd ero-manga artist.

I wish Hotaru could be a little more chill like Haruhi.  She comes really close to being too annoying in her screaming reactions to things and I'm sure some viewers were put off by it.  Also unlike Haruhi, who the host club found out was a girl from ep 1, nearly everyone stays in the dark about Hotaru being female since host dude has a "no grills" rule for his survivalist group.  Still, the show is pretty decent.  It got me to read the manga and the manga's actually gotten to the point where Hotaru confesses that she's female (and her friends actually believe her).  Don't think it's getting a season 2, sadly, but Sentai's picked it up and are actually dubbing it.

I'm still watching Mob!

Have you guys heard of Thunderbolt Fantasy? It's not anime per se, but it looks kind of neat. Hand puppets with CG embellishments, or something. I haven't checked it out yet, but I definitely want to.

I sorta checked out on a couple eps of Mob but then the episode before last really dragged me back in.  You just reminded me to dl the latest one.

I've heard of Thunderbolt Fantasy but didn't bother to try it.  I can certainly appreciate someone doing something different but I'm unsure if I'll actually watch any.  Wait, I just googled this to read a bit about it.  It was created and written by Urobutcher?  Oh no.   And it's got Tomokazu Seki and Rikiya Koyama in this thing as voice talent.  Darn!  I might have to watch some of this now.   :P

I'll watch it next. Finally finished Kill la Kill. The story progression was sssooooooooo similar to Gurren Lagann, holy crap. Like, I know it was the same guy heading it up, but Jesus Christ. Still, pretty good.

I never followed through with Gurren Lagann after the first couple episodes.  Good to know I've already seen it since I watched Kill la Kill.  :poo:

Has anyone seen Servamp?  I came across some gifs of Kuro in cat-form and now I'm wondering if I should I watch it now.

I definitely haven't seen it. Gonna go out on a limb and say neither has Rodent.

Also, I'd like to suggest an alternate title: QTxQT Badboys DX Rabu Suta Supesharu.

I watched the first four Madokas last night. Surprised the grisly shit happened so soon, I was expecting that to be a late game thing. But then the series is only twelve eps total, so... makes sense.

Have you watched the movies? I understand the first two are recaps and the third is all new. Do the recaps just splice together the existing TV animation, or did they do it all over from scratch?

I don't really mind the art style, other than the moeblob squishfaces.

It's currently airing, but I don't know how excited anyone is over it. I only bring it up because Beck mentioned it. A guy finds a cat who's really a vampire and they become friends, or something.

Nabeshin, eh? I can't say I've watched anything of his since The Wallflower, which admittedly was damn funny. I may still be scarred by Puni Puni Poemi, though.

Have you watched Psycho-Pass or Steins;Gate?

Yes, on Psycho-Pass but I hated it.

Oh, there we go: found my old post.

Quote from: Me, myself, and I baked joerammstein a pie ❤
I also tried Psycho Pass because I've heard so much raving about and, other than a few of the characters, I hated it for the most part.  Most of all the gross treatment of women in this series.  It has nothing to do with trying to tell a mature or adult story, which tends to be the excuse I see for it.  I can watch a story with rape or death in it and even the exploding heads and whatnot, but the presentation here was done with a sense of indulgence that I immediately picked up on and was able to follow into other episodes.  Like the rape in the first ep.  And the Yuki death scene.  Let's get women in their pantsu and harm them while they cry.  Totally gross.

Haven't tried Steins;Gate.  SG just has this look to it that immediately puts me off.  Like, Google image-searching it, even the characters look bored by it.

I watched some clips of Servamp and wasn't impressed by what I saw.  The vampire that turns into a cat (Sleepy Ash) is the only character in the entire thing that remotely interests me.  I like that lax, tired-vibe he gives because it's something different.  BUT... the actual MC is actually the bland-looking dude that finds him.  Bleh.  A bunch of the other characters look straight from a 90's fanfiction.  I swear all of the beady-eyed dudes in this pic look like the same guy.  I know, I know, anime is very same-facey to begin with.  But this is a particularly bad case of it imo.

I watched Umineko no Naku Koro ni.  About half of it.  What a clusterfuck.  I had to read dozens of pages of analysis to even know what the fuck was going on and I'm still confused.  The concept in general is fantastic when you think about it, because it's a rejiggered version of "Then There Were None."

but it's several years old already so, who cares, I guess
but I'm leaving courtesy space
just in case someone hasn't seen it and wants to tackle it cold...

You're led to think the scenario is "Eighteen people trapped on an island but a mysterious nineteenth person is the killer.  Most of the characters either believe or misrepresent that a witch did it but there's a human, non-magic solution."  This is all really cool in theory and having the MC Battler (Whew, what a name) solve it by figuring out the human means had the potential to be awesome.  The solution is basically that there were never eighteen people on the island, there are more than nineteen by perception, but there are actually seventeen people on the island with the killer acting as two of the eighteen.  That's super fucking clever.  But this shit completely falls apart in execution.  Even with the anime only adapting approximately half of the visual novel it's based on, it still fails at being half of something.

Instead of doing this as a straight up murder mystery, it completely runs wild with this witch stuff.  There are multiple "layers" and scenarios that the viewer goes through with the witches playing some sort of game.  The story itself is an unreliable narrator.  For example, we are seeing interactions that are impossible (like people who are already dead or don't exist having conversations with the living) and magic that's actually all in the killer's mind.  Even with the killer, their story, their motives, their accomplices... all of it put together (without any magic involved) comes off super contrived.

What's worse, I watched a few clips of this show and at times, it looks like Battler's going to be a Detective Conan type deducing the solutions in order to deny Beatrice's (the witch's) existence.  Which seemed cool.  But he's not a detective by any stretch of imagination.  He doesn't really succeed at shit and quickly gives up.  In fact, he turns out to be part of the reason this whole murder-thing got set off in the first place.

Apparently, I should watch Higurashi no Naku Koro ni but I hate the artwork I prefer to watch things with more adult primary characters.  And they share universes or something supposedly?  Fuck that.  I didn't even finish this one.

And "umineko" is a seagull?  umi = sea, neko = cat?

That sounds really convoluted. Steins;Gate was originally a visual novel as well, and I can't imagine the anime would deviate much from the source material.

The whole concept of people trapped on an island killing each other off reminds me of Danganronpa. Are you familiar with that one?

I finished Madoka. Got a little emotional at the end there. Anytime someone takes something that has become rote, and tries to do something unique with it, I respect the effort.

I was going to watch Eden of the East, but it's not on Netflix anymore! Any recommendations?
