I also saw a few eps of Sinbad no Bouken, which is now being exclusively streamed on Netflix or something.  There was already a series of OVAs which covered a lot of the same story.  I want to say they didn't actually do new animation for the portions already covered by the OVA, but they did edit at least one scene into a jarring mess.  And I can't believe how in denial people are about Sinbad being a Gary Stu.  He can be likable but let's not pretend he's not one.  I could do with less of having the other characters wank him so much.  Sinbad was much more tolerable in the first season of Magi where he takes a backseat to Aladdin and Ali-Baba.

Man, I'm seriously bi-polar about this new Berserk show. The CG in this most recent episode was pure trash. I just don't know anymore. Might drop the weekly viewings and just binge it when it's all out.

I'm going to chell out this Mob Psycho 100 thing. Also, I've heard good things about Bananya.

I'm on the last episode of ReLife. This was a strangely good show. Dude who had a traumatic experience on his first job becomes a recluse who can't find work, but a business who develops a drug that gives the appearance of youth offers to put him and a support member in their last year of high school in order to learn how to properly cope with his problems. Weird premise, but it was fun watching a 27 year-old essentially going back to high school with the advantage of more life experience to better deal with his fellow students and the detriment of having forgotten everything he learned in HS. It's the wish-fulfillment of, "if I went back this is how I'd do things right." In any case, it's a fun show, and at only 12 episodes if you hate it you're not invested in much.

I immediately love Mob Psycho. I want to watch it all right now, but there are only two episodes so far.

I think I might try to get back into Kill la Kill in the meantime.

I teh googled and Mob Psycho 100 is created by ONE?  Just from what you've seen, does it appear to share universes with One Punch Man?

Not as of yet, but I could see them doing it very easily. The main character, Mob, has mostly been disintegrating evil spirits with his mind powers, and most of the civvies don't seem overly surprised by any of the shit that's going on, so I could see it being a world where incredible shit happens on the reg.

The 100 in the title is actually the percentage where he has his telekinetic meltdown, and it's ticking up incrementally throughout each episode.

The opening theme is mostly some chick counting to 100 in between other lyrics.

Like a lot of Gainax stuff, once you get halfway it goes even more batshit insane than before and becomes more enjoyable. It doesn't turn it into a good show by my estimation, but it was fun.

^ Agree with this.  Really is one of those cases, imo, where the show would've improved if they had someone to scale them back and keep them in check.

Finished Sinbad no Bouken thanks to it being on Netflix so I didn't have to bother dling it or streaming it elsewhere.  It's really an odd show.  Sinbad's still a Gary Stu but he's probably one of the most likable Stus ever.  Sometimes clever things happened but they were always undermined by the show subsequently beating us over the head about how fucking clever it was.  Sometimes serious things would happen... but then Sinbad would become SDed or make a stupid face again.  It was enjoyable enough to pass the afternoon with as long as I didn't remind myself it's still pretty shitty to women and racist, too.  'Letz have brown ppl culture but no brown ppl, k?'  And that matriarchal society in the last two episodes was like some angry fifteen year old boy's fanfiction... yet it was conceived by a woman in her thirties.  Good job, ma'am.   ::)

91 Days is a Prohibition-era story of a young man who grew up in gangland but now seeks revenge against those who ascended the mafia ladder by murdering his family years ago.  I've only seen the first two episodes thus far, but it's solid as all get-out. Could it be anime's Godfather? Who knows.

Alderamin on the Sky is about an empire somewhere (possibly an alternate universe Europe) who wages war on everybody and the young trainees who become knights after saving a princess from a shipwreck, particularly one lecherous strategist whose plans just do not fail. It plops you into the middle of a situation with a smarmy asshole who has nothing to lose planning to beat the world. So far, it's enjoyable.

Amaama to Inazuma (Sweetness & Lightning) is about a high school teacher who's raising his kindergarten-aged little girl after his wife died. He sucks at cooking but discovers one of his students has a family restaurant that is failing, so they work together to figure out recipes and eat decent food. It's a cute slice-of-life story. Calling it now: the teacher and the student's mom will hit it off and they'll live happily ever after.

Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! (This Art Clup Has A Problem!) has a couple junior high kids going to art club, but the only one who takes it seriously is the girl who's attracted to the guy in her class who goes only to perfect his vision of the ideal 2D woman. Honestly this show kind of sucks. I'm giving another episode to endear itself to me before I drop it.

And now that all the Blurays are finally done I started watching the third season of one of the premiere trashy anime titty shows, High School DxD. It's just as smutty and hilarious as ever, but the storyline is getting repetitive and contradictory. But I've read that the writer behind the thing has figured it in his long game...it's an alternate time line that is corrected a few light-novels down the line. Hopefully it'll be popular enough to get a season 4. Plus I found the OVA for this season, so that should be fun.

Also, with Macross Delta on my watchlist I remembered Macross Zero for the first time in ten years. Z2S04 sent me a CD with the five episodes years ago, and I found them while cleaning out my computer room. However, they didn't work on my current desktop (worked fine on my old XP station...weird how that happens), so I looked for them online...a tall order when it's that old. But I finally found it and will probably rescreen it this weekend. I'm wondering if the CGI which was so cool then still holds up. I still like what they did in that regard with Macross Plus, and that was mid-nineties. Speaking of which, I wonder if I can find that anywhere? I have the DVDs of the original series and the VHS of the movie version....

Are you sure they aren't hooking up the teacher and the student?  I was fooled by Usagi Drop so I'm wary about being "tricked" by a show again.

I mean, if we want to be reductive, it's just One Punch Man, only with telekinesis instead of super strength, but I still love it.

I feel like this show's more in ONE's style as opposed to OPM, which was in the style of how Murata re-imagined OPM.  So I think that--coupled with the age difference between Saitama and Mob--helps it feel fresh even though it's the same humor.

Do you follow the manga of either? I was tempted to pick up OPM after the anime ended because God knows when more episodes will turn up.

I read OPM once the show ended--the Murata version--but there actually wasn't a whole lotta material after the ending.  I never wanted to bother with the original.  The art was a little painful.  I'd rather wait for more the Murata version or just wait for new eps next year.

I finally saw Wolf Children.  Whew.  Did she have wolf-sex?  That was cray.  But it was cute.  I almost want a sequel to it.

Also started watching Inu X Boku SS.  The main character is cute.  At first I was annoyed with her being such a tsundere and then realized she was a tsunshun instead.  But everyone else is so damn annoying.  I want to punch them all.  Her love interest is kinda creepy.  I did like that he gave her the option to kill him instead but I wish she had taken him up on his offer.

Rewatching Gokusen.  I really enjoy the anime so I decided the read the manga.  Reading the manga just makes me sad and how watered down and incomplete the anime is.  The manga presents a nice growth arc, following Yakumi and her students for two years (until they graduate) and explores both Shin's feelings for Yakumi as well as Yakumi adjusting into her role as a teacher.  We get more backstory into the other characters, too.  Where as sometimes the anime gets too bit silly (e.g. that whole maneki neko badge thing wasn't there, the students were being sold drugs).  And it's so short (13 eps) that you can feel it being wrapped up in a hurry.

Yeah. I remember it, but I never watch it.

Manga is generally better, but there have been instances where it really just drug on too long. GTO is a great example of this. The second half of the manga was just ponderous. Also, His & Her Circumstances, one of my all-time favorite shows and manga (since it's nearly a frame-for-frame adaptation except for the horrid amount of recap eps), really sucked while focusing on the male lead's family problems.

I know I could just google it, but is that the one where the frumpy-looking daughter of a prominent yakuza boss wears a red jumpsuit and teaches delinquents?

Frumpy?  But she can clean up when she wants to.  :D

You should give it a go if you're looking for something to read.  I'm almost done with it and I'm really impressed with how well it all flows together.  It's not too long and the only "filler" are actually throwaway bonus chapters with silly stories attached.  (In one, there's a dog goukon.)  They're pretty easy to skip over if you don't want to read it.  Also, the treatment of homosexuality in regards to a couple of minor characters is a little... archaic.  Like, anytime a gay guy shows up he's totally creepy.

I decided to look up other work by the same author (of Gokusen) and came across Koudaike no Hitobito.  Unfortunately, the first couple of chapters were super narration-heavy, which is something I hate hate hate.  Also, I disliked the look of the main character.  She reminds me of that childish imp that was supposed to be the love interest in Honey and Clover.  It's also completely different from Gokusen: a josei manga about a girl, her boyfriend, and his family of telepaths, it seems.  There's barely any chapters but I couldn't make myself go past Chapter 1.  However, it's getting a live-action movie adaptation that could be interesting.

I was looking for recommendations and when I searched, I swear I kept coming across shit like this:

Quote from: Nothing in particular
Anime like Gokusen:

1. GTO
2. [Completely unrelated thing]
3. [Mainstream shit like SAO or some shit like that]
4. [Some Doug-looking thing starring girls with pink and blue hair and they look 12]
5. [Sometimes fuckin' Bleach, One Piece, Fairy Tail, or some long-ass dragged-out past-done thing like that]

Someone told me to try Cromartie High School.  Anyone ever see that one?

I also still haven't finished Kyou Kara Ore Wa.  I suppose that could be the next manga I try, at least.

Oh, yeah, and no way am I touching live-action Gokusen.  It deviates even more than the anime does.

I like Cromartie, I have the discs around here somewhere, but it's a straight-up gag manga. There's zero drama or any kind of narrative in it, so I wouldn't compare it to Gokusen at all, outside of the delinquent student angle.

Yeah, I think the delinquents being in it was the only reason it was recommended to me.  Like with Sakigake!! Otokojuku.  Not the same as Gokusen either but it looks amusing in its own way.

Watching Ganbarist! Shun right now.  (Lots of exclamation marks in between words in these titles.)  It's the anime based on the manga that reportedly inspired Olympic gold medal gymnast Kohei Uchimura.  It seems decent but it isn't really pulling in my interest.  I was telling Merla they should make an Uchimura anime.  Poor Hiroki Ogita will probably get a hentai though.

Oh yeah, and I finished Gokusen (the manga) only to find out there were some specials released that are more conclusive than the official end.  I liked seeing Yankumi's new students but, man, she seemed really out of character.  And it was weird that her new batch of kids didn't know she's Yakuza.  The whole school knew at the end.  None of the senpai told them not to fuck with her?

Her design's spot on but every once in a while, she gets thrown into a cute outfit.  If she looks uncute most of the time, I'd say it's due to her general attitude and not dolling herself up on the regular.
