I remember when vaping was first gaining widespread adoption, and hadn't yet been regulated or whatever, smokers were using that fact to just vape anywhere and everywhere. "It's not smoke. I'm not smoking. Fuck you. Fuck off." *exhales directly in your face*

I really enjoy this manga. It has very distinctive character art, but it already seems like that's been sanded down a bit to more resemble expected anime norms. Still, looking forward to it.

I only smoke on New Year's Eve, as cigars are great for lighting fireworks. I enjoy ringing in the new year with whistler rockets, Black & Milds, and a few dozen rounds of ammo like a true redneck terrorist with all my rowdy redneck terrorist friends. But I digress.

Smoking Behind the Supermarket is a nice story that I'm looking forward to seeing animated. You just have to cope with the main male character being oblivious to the point of retardation regarding the main female character as if she's freaking Clark Kent.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Chainsmoker Cat is unapologetically degenerate and I love it.

I literally just heard of Chainsmoker Cat a few days ago. I'm housesitting so I'll probably watch it back home with Merla's Netflix instead of our friend's ad-riddled one. I did watch a few things:

** All-Works Maid anime. **
Not typing out that whole title. Watched two episodes.  Not the most offensive thing I've seen but it's ridiculous. She wants to be a maid but she's all super powerful and doesn't realize she is. She's also the saint of the world, the heroine of an otome, canon love interest to multiple men, an isekai'd genius of a little girl who could learn and do anything with her parents being super cool about it. Oh, oh, and she has unique silver hair and lapis lazuli eyes and is actually the secret daughter or whatever to some sort of count. Oh, oh, and she met two nice people on the plane (that crashes and kills them all) and those people are also isekai'd into the same world as royalty/nobility and they're 100% aware they are isekai'd into an otome and are looking for the super saint heroine because the demon lord's coming or some shit and only she can save everyone. The main character's father is also looking for her and his main knight guy actually meets the maid and he's clearly gonna fall for her, so of course the main character ends up naked at his mansion.

Do I actually need to critique this fucking thing?  The description alone is making me fucking retarded. Again, it's not the worst thing ever but I think the whole situation of contrivances and coincidences with the big blender of Mary Sue makes this show fucking dumb. It was enough that she didn't realize she's the saint but just wants to be a maid. But this story is so needlessly extra it's making me roll my eyes up my own ass.

** Heavy Knight anime. **
Was going to give this a go and dumped it after, like, two minutes. It's clearly for the Solo Leveling / Demon Slayer crowd to look at it and go "oooh, explosions and pretty colors" while they fondle their rotted brain stems through their own nostrils. Found the camera work nauseating. No, thanks.

** Please Excuse My Younger Brothers **
This completely lost me within the first few minutes when the girl's mom marries a man with sons and the "surprises" her daughter with brothers. Is this a thing in Japan or something? Just remarry and your kids don't meet each other ever until the day you move in? I hope it's not because that's fucking stupid. Not to mention cruel. No, thanks.

This one's longer than the others I posted so I made it's own post for it...

** Frontier Lord with Zero Subjects **
tl;dr - Age gap involving child ew. World doesn't make any sense. Also, colonizer. Meh.

That this decorated warrior was given a bunch of grass and no people or supplies or even an old bread crumb can to jack into is fucking dumb; and he's just, "meh, I'll give it a couple of days and then head home."  Logistically, you're gonna starve and get ill without shelter, my guy. If you're gonna try, why commit to a few days and not a longer period. Politically, pretty sure the king doesn't just give you a domain to rule--which the world establishes brings taxes to the crown--and you fuck off and go back home with no consequences. So this entire world feels paper towel thin.

So I was willing to overlook the lack of supplies somewhat when it's clear that he's being mistreated because of his background as a commoner orphan. But then the fantasy natives come along and give this man everything he needs and it's so unsatisfying. Yeah, yeah, they are supposedly trading with him because he's soooo strong but the kingdom he's from is their enemy and they're too lackadaisical about it.

Then the fifteen-year old teenager falls in love with the dude and wants to marry him by the end of the first episode.  Couldn't the person who falls in love with him be older? It's handwaved as "oh, you're so strong and that's all a woman wants" but it doesn't make any sense for people hostile to the kingdom to permit this no matter how many friendly-ass colors their horns want to turn.

And this is another age gap thing except super grody. This man enlisted and served for twenty years. He's no younger than thirty and that's IF I'm generous about how young he was when he became a soldier. Can we not do this? Couldn't this have been an older villager woman? If this were, like, a widow or a woman who left her husband, it would even make more sense because a lot of times, those types of women are seen as outsiders to their communities. The village head could've forced such a woman to babysit this dude and her falling for him would've been acceptable as he's essentially another "outsider". Even more so if she already had children because then, perhaps the men in her own community don't want her so she latches onto this guy. It doesn't make sense for the pretty, able-bodied little girl, which the other guys like or are at least somewhat possessive of.

Also, I was so caught up in the age gap and the other aspects that the whole Dances with Wolves thing went over my head. I usually give Japan a pass on that type of thing because while they have their own sordid history, they're so homogenous and I feel like the colonizer aspects should be more blatant to a Westerner. But it's still not a good thing to have in your show.

I really do like the idea of this absurdly strong meathead of an orphaned commoner being treated badly by the nobles and rewarded with a poor domain: resource-poor and filled with monsters with starving villages and hostile people nearby; and he needs to broker peace, prosperity and cooperation. This isn't that concept though. So, meh. I will say though, it wasn't completely unwatchable. I did sit through the whole first ep.

** Daemons of the Shadow Realm **
Only posting about this one because the 2nd cour started off with a run-down of events. Can we not do this shit? Can we not cater to the brainlets who weren't paying attention to the fucking show? It's only been a week in between the prior cour. If a viewer's goldfish brain couldn't keep up, they've likely already dumped this show, looked up info/spoilers, or are watching while doomscrolling anyway.  This shit felt like a time-stealer and I hated it.

** Oblivious Saint Anime **
lol, I forgot I watched this. That's because it's completely forgettable. To the point you wonder why they even bothered making this first episode.

I only remembered it because I watched that maid one where she has 'lapis lazuli' eyes and in the light novel version of this story, the evil sister has 'padparadscha' eyes, which are inherited from one of her parents (I forget which) and wins in over the top silliness. I didn't even know that was a word until trying to read that book.

I have a special distaste for media where you'll have two characters interact as if they've been taken over by robots and are trying to treat each other as human beings. This chick's learns for the first time her father loves her. They haven't been apart for years or anything. They've just, uh, never fucking talked to each other. B-But you don't understand: she's his treasure. He, uh, just never mentioned this before and let her feel hated this whole time.

And then you have the sister with the padparadscha 'Parappa the rapper' eyes being a bitch. Will she be a bitch again? Yes, yes she will. And our main character seems surprised by this behavior that this chick is always engaging in.

I don't even remember the character interaction being this fucking terrible. I dropped that book because it kept shifting the pov character and they all spoke with the same narrative voice. So while I agree it was badly written--just going by the translation--the way the characters interacted with one another was actually not one of the problems. Yet this adaptation seemed determined to make it one.

The fat titty snake lady show (Reiwa no Dara-san) is surprisingly wholesome.

Although I've heard it gets a little fetishy with the siblings' gender identities further in, so we shall see.

Kore Kaite Shine triggered my hay fever. :'(

Otome Kaijuu Carameliser is a neat idea, but I'm skeptical how far they can take the concept. Like, is she going to transform literally every time she's turned on? Are people just going to grow accustomed to having a giant monster showing up in the city every couple of days? It seems more like a premise for a cutesy one-off short than an actual ongoing series.

Bummed to learn that the first episode back of Yomi no Tsugai is a recap. So unnecessary.

It's not a recap but it spends a few minutes recapping before getting on with the story. It is new content.

** Witch in Mongolia **
I don't know if I can stick with this. It's good but it also managed to break my heart in two episodes. I don't know if I can survive that week after week.

** The Duke's Son Claims He Won't Love Me **
Kind of bored with this on the offset. I wish this anime had started in the middle of episode one because the "set-up" or whatever feels pointless. I fast forwarded and nothing of value was lost. As soon as I got midway, it started to get interesting and then it soon ended. I might watch another episode or two before making my mind.

I know the new Tanya the Evil hasn't started but, damn, I can't be the only one who more or less liked the anime when it came out but no longer gives a fuck, right? Granted, I recall starting to fall off from the later eps but damn, son; it's been nearly ten years. I guess you're expected to reacquaint with the anime or read the source material but screw that.

If nothing else, I appreciate how Lara effectively mimics the visual presentation of a bygone era. Watching it I was reminded of Ranking of Kings and how that show gave me a similarly nostalgic feeling.

For me, it wasn't so much nostalgia than the feeling that the story is being presented straight from a storybook. I think that feeling will fade once she's settled into modern Japan. Unless this is older Japan. But once a smartphone appears, the vibe is dead for me.

** Stepmother one **
I watched the Stepmother one on YouTube. It's there for free. I forget the full name of it but it's the one where the girl thinks the stepmom and daughters will be mean to her when they're just aggressively weird. It was all right. Feels a bit like the schtick might get old fast. Also, how is this a stepmom when I don't see the father around? I'm a bit confused about the dynamic. Is the father dead? Is he away for work?

I think the school parts are going to be a real challenge to get through. It's been awhile since I read the manga but it almost feels like a different, inferior show when at the school versus the rest of the episode.

This first episode was okay. I could see people being bored by this though. I might watch a bit more to see if it interests me, especially since I dropped the book so early.

I know most people will like the Mari character from Goodbye Lara but I found her annoying. I hope she becomes more tolerable soon.

It's fine. Not wowed but I also read this story in the LN and manga. Presentation is decent so far.

I don't hate it but it's too gross that I can't love it. It's both good and also not something I want to continue watching.

I did find it weird that I came across comments on this show being "this is what depression looks like." Which, in some aspects, sure, I guess. Are all the gags included in that statement?

Also, why isn't she finishing these cigarettes? You don't smoke up to the filter but these seem a bit too long. Unless Japanese cigs have super-long filters or something. I dunno. Or maybe that's also part of the joke that she leaves them too long.

Yani Neko can get really uncomfortable, for sure. The one that got me was the alcohol girl vomiting in her sleep. That snapped me right out of it. Too real.

I've also been enjoying Let's Go Kaiki-gumi. It's nothing spectacular, but it's another one of those shows that makes me feel like it's trying to be from 30 years ago or whatever.

I was curious if it actually was an older property that they dredged up from the depths, but no, the manga only debuted in 2018.
