I watched Gorilla girl anime. Not terrible but kind of boring. Main characters in shows like this need to have a goal and then work towards that goal. (Even if it's a flimsy-ass goal like being the bestest villainess ever but without any villainy.) This girl's all "I want a quiet life" so, like, what is she doing to get that? She's already a count's daughter so it's not like she's crawling out of poverty. It made no sense to me that she didn't keep the gorilla shit to herself instead of sharing with the snitch teacher. Once the credits started rolling, it felt like absolutely nothing happened. I like the scenes with the gorilla giving a thumbs up and stuff. I chuckled. But so far this girl's fucking boring and her guy friends left no impression so far.

Witch Watch was kind of funny but I don't like this type of female character. Something about her annoys me. I was all "fuck you" when she killed his cool vintage mug.

The first episode of that new Gundam really grabbed me. I was glued to it from start to finish. The stylized humans go a long way for me, and the CG mobile suits aren't awful.

Ninkoro wasn't on my radar, but the first episode was very charming and cleanly animated. I'll be watching more for sure for sure.

I couldn't get into either. I liked the designs and some of the animation was good but didn't care for either. I don't really have much of a critique like I did for some of the other stuff I watched. It's not like I thought either one was bad or anything.

I'm just gonna go through my picks again and give a brief assessment:

Lazarus: Don't think I lasted five minutes. Nope.

My Hero Vigilantes: Mostly enjoyed this, but didn't like how the one female character was immediately relegated to damsel status. Maybe she was faking it for some reason to be revealed later?

Aharen: Still adorable.

Witch Watch: This was pretty good. Forgot what a derp Nico is early on. Her character definitely improves as the story moves forward.

Loser Ranger: Haven't watched yet.

Kowloon Generic Romance: So far, so good. Was honestly shocked by the amount of goon appeal, though.

GQuuuuuuX: Love.

How to become Ordinary: I hate how the protags are estranged, but I'm still enraptured by this show.

Rock Lady: Surprised by how ugly the animation was on this one. And then they switch to even uglier CG models anytime they play their instruments. No thanks.

Apocalypse Hotel: This one has big Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou vibes for me, but it might end up being a little twee for my tastes.

Anne don't call me Shirley: This was okay. I like how the backgrounds are all these dreamlike paintings.

Yaiba: The action in this one is way too fluid. I'm just waiting for it to fall off, because I can't see them maintaining that quality throughout the entire run.

Guilty Gear: Embarrassing trash. Fucking dogshit.

Dinner Table Detective: Another one that looks nice, but it's a damn detective show. Ugh. | Update: Dropped after E02

Mononoke Lecture Logs: Looks cheap. Gave up almost immediately.

Alien MuMu: As soon as the girl started explaining in detail how microwaves operate, I checked out.

Moonrise: First episode was okay. It's all there on Netflix, so I'll probably chell it out every now and then.

I just remembered I tried the one where the chick removes her pantsu to rewind time. I get it. I mean, I understand what it's meant to be, but it's just too sanitized and safe to be erotic. I'll never understand the anime industry's preoccupation with this type of blue balls bullshit.

Speaking of the smut, I also looked at the dark elf one and the android one. Dark elf: binned. Android: on the chopping block.

Just to elaborate on the dark elf show... the "male" protag is this androgynous child that she's drooling over... I just don't buy your premise. There is no eroticism to be had here.

I also watched part of that Dark Elf one a couple of weeks ago and it's like... I thought this was a yandere, not a pedo. Gross.

Yeah, like what do they call the gender-swapped loli fetish stuff? Shota? That's was this is, right? She absolutely dwarfs him physically. It's like a mother and her son.

Begone.

I've kinda given up on this season. Even stuff I haven't tried yet. It feels like a dud. The Too-Perfect Saint and Apothecary Diaries season two are all I'm sticking with and Too-Perfect Saint isn't exactly all that great. I've read the manga and like it okay enough to stick with it but I can't recommend the anime. It's kind of bland.

I did, however, finally finish Delicious in Dungeon. I actually stopped around ep 7 or so but restarted it completely and watched it with Merla over a couple of weekends. I'm glad I waited. What a fantastic show. I still thinks it starts off a bit meh. It's not bad but it didn't really hook me which is why I wasn't in any hurry to finish it. But by the end, I felt invested in this story's world. This type of story could've easily become boring with a generic fantasy world found in most isekai but this world manages to feel super unique.

After Delicious in Dungeon and Frieren last year, every season will suck in comparison from now on.

I'm watching a lot, but I'm really not over the moon about most of it.

Summer's looking pretty stacked, though.

Rock is a Lady's Modesty may have been picked back up by me. I don't recall what caught my attention but I dipped back in to watch an episode and things are actually moving at a good pace. Funny enough, the strength of this show is having the characters play music out in the world. When they're actually playing music in public performances I'm much more interested, weird mo-cap and all. Yes, we need a story too and I understand that needs some measure of set up, but that's not the strong part of the show. Neither is watching mo-cap in a boring practice room.

I almost feel like this show should've started with episode four. I skipped episodes two and three and literally nothing of value was lost. Even episode one feels redundant. Some of that set-up could've been put in four and the rest skipped. If I continue to stick back with this show, maybe I'll rewatch it and change my mind.

From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman anime could have been pretty good based on the manga I've read of it, but they absolutely bombed the adaptation. Every fight thus far has been handwaved...there were three (bumpkin vs loli magic sensei, bumpkin and muscle student vs. flying cockatrice, bumpkin and loli magic sensei vs street gang necromancer boss) in the manga that lasted several chapters, and in the show lasts a couple minutes at most. It's a shame, as it had the makings of a unique and entertaining storyline, but the fights have to be there.

Yeah, they did that same shit with that Guild Receptionist anime last season: take the fights and make them nothing-burger.

Also, I heard that Apothecary Diaries is taking the week off. :vaderno:

Bumpkin is alright, but the way characters move around during combat just looks absolutely fucked. And it's on full display right out of the gate in the intro. It's like trash-tier rotoscoping or something, and the director is incompetent at fight scenes. And that would explain why they've just been skimming over the big encounters.

Further to that, whether you're a fan of Demon Slayer or not, you can't deny the transition from manga to anime is nothing short of miraculous. Imagine Bumpkin in that team's hands, you know?

But that's probably all just beyond the scope of their production. Bumpkin seems very... obligatory. Like, no one's really expecting anything from it, so there's no extra effort being made. Just get it out there and move on to the next project.

Too much anime feels like that, honestly.

I'd go as far as to say most media is like that these days. Phone it in and move on to the next one. I feel like the terrible shit from thirty years ago or whatever was at least trying to have fun. But that could be rose-colored glasses.

I will admit, despite the relatively crummy animation, I'm still watching it. It's oddly compelling.

I also started watching Lycoris Recoil, which I had completely passed over back when it initially aired. "Another girls with guns show? Bugger off."

But after checking out the new shortform series, I was like, "Damn! Did the original show look this nice?" And the answer is yes.

That's been on my list of stuff to watch but I never got to it.

Not anime, but Mangadex got DMCA'd big time. Super bummed because I loved reading stuff there. Especially both Apothecary Diaries mangas. One of the few manga sites that didn't throw a hundred titty ads in your face when trying to view a single page. The Maomao Notes manga doesn't even have an official English release for fuck's sake.

Have you tried any of the official manga apps? If you're current on Apothecary, you could probably keep up with it on Manga Up! using their free daily points. That's how I've been reading Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You.

God do I hate how they subdivide chapters, though. What a racket.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep them in mind.

Without a new episode and with Mangadex's issues, I decided to dip my toes into the Apothecary Diaries LNs. I was gonna do it legit but, holy fuck, $19 USD for a physical copy of volume one? Are you people out of your fuckin' minds? It's not even a "novel" novel, it's a light novel. Meanwhile, one of the author's other titles being published in English by another company is $13 USD. But $19? Absolute insanity. And I'm not buying shit on Kindle, Amazon. Not when you can go in and do whatever the fuck you want with the files I "buy".
