Firstly, every picture has the surrounding city cropped or cut out of the shot. The things not even three stories tall by my estimation and not very wide either. I couldn't find of shot of the Alamo and the buildings next to it, but this is an aerial shot of downtown to give you an idea. If this picture extended another inch or so, somewhere below the 1 would be the Alamo. 2 is Rivercenter Mall (or more specifically, the Dillards). And that round friendly corner marked by 3 is where all the people with bells and kettles hang out to ambush you and try to get money out of you.

I'm a little suprised they didn't try to preseve more of the site. Even back in the day it was important location and they just sort of bulldozed everything but the church.
