light on dark works for me. It's easier on the eyes to read, say, white on black than black on white.

I suck at matching colors and graphic design, so I cheated by going with an existing combination: on my Evangelion site, I made the whole thing evoke the Unit 01 by going with dark purple background, white lettering, orange links, and neon green highlights and borders. When it came time to do a forum skin, I just adapted it for the sake of having something different. IMO, it works well.

Here are some tips on color, despite the author posting it on a site with gray text on white background :angry:

Yeah I've found just find something you like as a colour scheme and tweak that to your liking. I mean it doesn't really have to be another web page. Find a CD case you think is nice and copy that if you want.

Here's the other thing I want to figure out, is a theme for the site. I wouldn't mind sticking a few anime pics in the site, but I want this site to look semi-professional for future employers.

Yeah, you could take pretty much anything. The whole blue/orangey thing happening with the default skin here was all based on that one image of the bananas.

I really want my site to look like something that would be worthy of the CSS Zen Garden, but most of those sites are done by professional web design companies, and I'm broke.
