crap I was thinking endor was from LOTR...but it is the bible.

but then I found this from some site:

Magic in Endor during the end of the Second Age and the Third Age is almost exclusively in the hands of the Order of the Istari, and the Servants of Sauron. There are NO Wizards outside of the Istari that are not Elven. Some of the Elves learned this form of magic to understand it. Lord Elrond of Rivendale is one such Elf. Most Elven Magic at the time revolves around some Sorcery, considered a "dark art" by the elves as it did not come to the Elves until after Saurons betrayal, and priestly (mostly druidical) crafts.

I don't know...I can't remember everything I read in teh Sil

There are some LOTR-esque books out there that are the most blatant rip off of LOTR ever.  The hobbits are called "Warrows" i think and the similarities are off the scale.

I think you can get away with stuff like willow and the above mentioned series in the name of homage to LOTR.  It's not just another fantasy world to be ripping off it's the penultimate master work, names from LOTR can be found in all sorts of different fantasy book franchises.  Even star wars has planets named after LOTR places I think.
I really don't mind it if it's ode to something or that you where inspired by another artist work. What I don't like is there are some people that do that and then act like they were so creative and came up with all by themselves, and they don't even mention that they were heavily influenced by this or that work. I also hate it when those same people try to sue people for ripping them off when they did the very same thing to someone else. (Example: George Lucas Vs Battlestar Galactica.)

And I don't know of any on-screen planets names that where taken from LOTR, but there could be some EU stuff that is. I do know that "Endor" is from the Bible. More specifically the Witch of Endor story. And while not named after it, I heard that Tatooine was based on Arrakis from the Dune series of books, which GL was a big fan of. That was also suppose to the orgin of the line about the "Spice Mines".
Spice Frieghter too, though I've never seen Dune.

He tired, but it was thrown out of court. And rightly so. BSG did borrow elements from SW but not enough to make it an infringement. Mainly the "Look" with their SFX shots. But that ended up backfiring on them cause I heard it cost a million dollars to produce one episode of Battlestar Galactica. That's not a lot now, but in 1979 that was a huge amount to pour into one episode. And that's why the show got canned after one year.

After watching some of the movies and shorts that "Inspired" SW, I don't think George Lucas should be suing anyone. I mean the opening scrawl was almost exactly the same as the one seen in Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe.

Why the fuck do they quote me?
I said its hot outside let me go swimming in your eyes;
We been running for awhile. Why don't you lay dow, I'll make you smile.
I could never ask for nothing better than this;
It's just tequila and the beach, it's quite salty when we kiss.

Since I posted last in this thread I've see the Kurosawa film, The Hidden Fortress. I had heard that a lot of the elements for SW were taken right from this film and that's pretty much true. The movie even starts with two peasants fighting with each other in the desert, ala R2-D2 and C-3PO. Where they run across a former General named Makabe (Kenobi) and they have the gold (Death Star Plans) that the bad guys want. In the process of the adventure they help a young head strong Princess named Yuki (Leia) and they help her escape from the country (The Death Star) and just when all hope is lost A rogue general has a change of heart and helps them at the last minute (Han Solo) The only thing missing the young farm boy, and a wookie.

Although it's not directly as ripped off as say Sergio Leone's "A Fist Full of Dollars" was of "Yojimbo." I don't know if Sergio Leone ever said this was remake or not. It's not listed in the credits as one, but it is clearly the same film. I mean right down to key plotpoints like the hero freeing the wife of the gambler from the bad guy who has taken her in lue of payment.

Actually with a little research it looks like Sergio Leone didn't give credit where credit was due and got caught with this pants down because of it. This is from IMDB:

"The film's US release was delayed when Yojimbo (1961) screenwriters Akira Kurosawa and Ryuzo Kikushima sued the filmmakers for breach of copyright. Kurosawa and Kikushima won and as a result received 15 percent of the film's worldwide gross and exclusive distribution rights for Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. Kurosawa said later he made more money off of this project than "Yojimbo"."

Go figure.

Ha.  You go Kurosawa.  I know how bad this is gonna sound, but I haven't seen any of those movies.  I always meant to see Yojimbo but never got around to it.

I know, Rama steal something else from Kurosawa for your novel.  You've guaranteed success!  After your lawsuit, loss profits, and besmerched name of course.

You should. Yojimbo is a great flick. I wish I owned it, but sadly I don't.

If Lucas and Leone are any indication, I'll still have fame and fortune despite all that.
