I think there's confusion here between Kull and Krull. Krull was a 80's fantasy/sci-fi movie about alien beings coming down and some guy going on a quest to save his woman. Kull was that Conan clone from the late 90s with Kevin Sorbo in the title role fighting off the evil witch played by Tia Carrere (Schwing!).

I can't believe someone actually compared Krull to Willow, Dark Crystal, and of all things, Ladyhawke.

An object of great powet (in LOTR the One Ring, in Willow the baby) finds it's way into the hands of a halfling who then set out on a great journey to take it someplace (In LOTR Mount Doom, in Willow back to the humans) along the way they run into a mighty warrior who is displaced, but who will one day be king (LOTR: Aargorn, Willow: Madmartigan) and a powerful Mage who acts as the guide for our young half-Ling (LOTR: Gandalf. Willow:Fin Raziel). Also our hero falls in love with a princess of her people (LOTR Arwen, Willow Sorsha). Then meet a powerful white lady in the woods (LOTR Gaderial, Willow: The fiary queen, or what ever her name was) They fight their way through Golbins and Riders in black on their journey (LOTR: The Witchking and his Ringwraiths. WIllow: Gen. Kael and his troops) but in the end they end up in the accursed land (LOTR: Mordor Willow: The seige of Queen Bavmorda's castle) Where they finally defeat the evil and peace is returned to the land. Our once Rogue hero marries his princess and becomes king of all the land and our small brave hero returns to his villiage to return to his humble life.

I watched Willow a few years back after having read LotR and the comparison was obvious. Me and my brother were both like "how the hell did they get away with this!" so yeah... needless to say I totally agree.

There are actaully 2 more Willow books following the events of the series written by X-Men comic writter Chris Clairemont. I did a double take when I noticed that on the shelf next to Janine's bed one morning. "Is that? By the... what the hell?" Apparently they're good but then she reads Magic the Gathering books ...

I always like Willow as a kid. I watched the DVD with commentary and some featurettes and then realised that it was, apparently, a commercial failure. Kids are oblivious to such things.

I've seen it many times lately thanks to TBS. That's also how I watch Masters of the Universe time and time again. Though that DVD's mine, not my brother's like Willow, so I can watch that gem anytime!

There are some LOTR-esque books out there that are the most blatant rip off of LOTR ever. The hobbits are called "Warrows" i think and the similarities are off the scale.

I think you can get away with stuff like willow and the above mentioned series in the name of homage to LOTR. It's not just another fantasy world to be ripping off it's the penultimate master work, names from LOTR can be found in all sorts of different fantasy book franchises. Even star wars has planets named after LOTR places I think.

I really don't mind it if it's ode to something or that you where inspired by another artist work. What I don't like is there are some people that do that and then act like they were so creative and came up with all by themselves, and they don't even mention that they were heavily influenced by this or that work. I also hate it when those same people try to sue people for ripping them off when they did the very same thing to someone else. (Example: George Lucas Vs Battlestar Galactica.)

And I don't know of any on-screen planets names that where taken from LOTR, but there could be some EU stuff that is. I do know that "Endor" is from the Bible. More specifically the Witch of Endor story. And while not named after it, I heard that Tatooine was based on Arrakis from the Dune series of books, which GL was a big fan of. That was also suppose to the orgin of the line about the "Spice Mines".
