I hope you'll excuse me...

[doHTML]
So I've been reading a lot of USA Today. There's a free first-come/first-serve stack at school, so I grab one when I can and I turned to this one part where people had
written letters
pertaining to this opinion which addresses the gender disparity of colleges. (Which according to an earlier article, has women up to 57% of the college population.)

This was my favorite part from the letters:
Quote
Who has the audacity to give me, a female college student, the comforting words: "Having too few college-educated men will hurt U.S. competitiveness. And if girls who lose out now feel cheated, they won't when they're seeking mates or when their own sons are bound for college."
OMG, yes, my sons! My goddamn sons! Bah. Maybe if my damn hypothetical sons want to go to college so badly, they'll make sure they have the scores to be qualified.

I don't see what the big damn problem is anyway in regards to the writer's concern that girls will have under-educated mates. The Chinese have a huge surplus of men. (And according to that article, so do the Indians. Pakistan, no one cares about anyway.) Bring a bunch of the smart ones over, problem solved for everyone. Then they would also have the bonus of a math tutor. Everyone wins!

Yeah. There was this article in my local paper a few months ago about how women had trouble finding dates in University. Among the complaints of there being too many women they also complained that they liked to go out to clubs to pick up and there weren't enough guys there who were into the same scene (ie: 1 night stands) It was retarded.

I went through computer engineering. I would generously approximate the percentage of women in my program at 10%. If these sluts wanted to find some intelligent guys to get together with they could have taken a trip south side and had the pick of the litter. Instead they act like bitchy snobs and don't give our kind the time of day.

Anyway... so 10 years ago we bitch about too few women in schools, now we bitch about too many? It's retarded. Especially considering there are still organisations encouraging more female enrolements in certain programs.

They couldn't find one night stands? What? Why didn't they post a sign-up sheet outside of class?

I think it's inevitable that whatever's encouraging guys to not go to school will reverse once too many of them have career wives who call them losers and take off with the all the bread at each turn. I don't know, I just think the men not getting an education will want at least some of that powet again.

Why is that anyway that guys don't want to go to school? Growing up, among my cousins on my mom's side, only three were girls. Out of all of us, Merla and I have the degrees. And I have a feeling that the four new girls that have appeared during the last decade are all gonna end up with degrees, too.

There is a part of me that wants to go back and finish what I started; but then again I think will it really help me in my make it in my new chosen profession? I mean they can't really teach you this, and I'd just go back to get some sort of general liberal arts degree; which may or may not help me in the long run, and then there is the issue of the money. Which makes all of my other concerns a moot point right now, but hopefully for not much longer.

What sucks is I'd have to start all over since almost all the credits I did have gone towards my Architectural Drafting Degree. So not too many classes I took would transfer over. I don't know...maybe one day. Just so I can say I got it, If for nothing else.

Or maybe I should just major in history and not even try to go to school for anything concerning my writing. I don't know...like I said, gotta make some money first.

There is a part of me that says "get the fuck out of college before you turn 30" but then again I keep hooking up with 18 yr olds. Will this help me in chosen profession...possibly. No one could've taught me how to do this and if I leave I'll just be joning the "real world" which is chock full of absitnence and need for actual effort.

I can always say fuck it all and become a pro wrestler in japan.

I can see a certain demographic of the guys not going to school being labour intensive tradespeople that, and I don't mean to be sexiest when I say it, but are easier jobs to do when you're a guy. A construction job doesn't need an education. A trade requires college at most, and not University.

I can't really account for the rest... though... with people getting married later and later, it's not so easy to just get hitched out of high school... so that may account for why women are going to school more. It's either that or get a crappy job out of high school and why not just do what everyone else is doing?

Nah, that's not sexist. That men are physically stronger is a fact of life. I can see why if a guy's making a comfortable wage working in a warehouse or something, that he wouldn't exactly be encouraged to go out and study when all of his basic needs are already being met.

Ha, I always thought it'd be cool to be a housewife.... until I saw the load of the them in my family getting the proverbial shaft up the ass, my own mother included. I've concluded that I'm not leaving the bulk of my financial destiny in the hands of any spouse for any reason.

Yeah, I had the same deal with my Graphic Arts program (98-00). However, since classes filled up all the time, I ended up taking things like history and sociology that were useful later. If I had just taken stupid microeconomics back then, I wouldn't be stuck spending 400+ bucks on it this fall (or summer).

I actually find that going to school has helped me write again, which is weird, but I guess taking at least one or two classes keeps my brain going. (Where as if I just work and go home, it becomes more sedentary.) I always want to write when I'm suppose to be doing homework (or paying attention, whatever the case may be). I think my mind likes that sort of pressure.

Well I wouldn’t go back for drafting again...that shit was murder. I was at school from 6am to 6pm Mon, Wed, and Fri. it was killing me. And the manual from AutoCAD was thicker then the phone book and I was suppose to learn and remember all that. That and the fact that I had come to realize that the art had gone out of it for me, is what made me drop out in the first place. My biggest regret is not that I dropped out, but that I've let myself lot in limbo for so long.

I do want to go back. There is a part of me that would feel better if I had that little piece of paper, but at this point I'd have to see a clear cut benefit from it because of the cost. I'd have to know that if I put in the time and money into it (which I would have to get loans and grants and what not to pay for) that I'd come out the other end in better shape them I am now, which I just don't know if I would be. Self-pride is good an all, but is it going to help me sell this stuff? AndiI have to sell this stuff, it's my only way to get out of this place, to escape.

That's why I say someday...maybe if II sell this and it's a hit and I can live on the royalites I'll take the time off to go back and get a degree, but I just don't see it happening now.

You've just pointed out one of my biggest problems. I have to admire and bow down to you for being able to resist the temptation to write instead of doing homework. You see I can't...I'm not strong enough to do that. To me writing is creating and it's addictive. To take a page with nothing on it and turn it into something world all your own is just fun to me. Homework on the other hand...I've always hated it, no. Actually I've always been insulted by it. I always saw it as busy work. I know they need that to see if you get it, but I just never saw it that way. So it's not hard for me to choose which I'd rather do. Course that's totally self-destructive.

And I like the pressure too. I always wrote my reports on Sunday night at about 6pm. I'd stay up as long as it took and I always got at least a B.

I'd totally love to have a sugar momma. My fiancee is a student with a minimum wage job right now... not really gonna help with the bills when she moves in 3 months from now.

Now my crazian stalker at work who tried to give me a cat has a job like mine, owns half a Japanese restaurant and owns two houses! My relationship decisions are less than financially sound...

The money from a book isn't all people think it is. What really happens is, the publishing company gives you an advance and doesn't give you any more until you've earned every penny of it. And since the author only gets between $0.25 and $5 a book, depending on the cover price, it takes a long time. Plus, if you stay on with a publishing company, they have to approve any new ideas before you start writing it, and you have to have a certain amount written by a certain deadline. If you keep missing deadlines, they drop you.

When the local insurance industry cratered in 1990, I didn't work a "real" job for two years. I frequently felt like I was one late dinner away from a homeless women's shelter. Yes, Eddie is worlds apart from the ex, but the idea of not bringing in my own money is to the phobia point.

Actually all of that depends on the contract you sign and the publisher. Time limits don't bother me too much, and for the record when I said some day I didn't mean the sales off a single book as I have plans for a series of them. Plus I'm going to try to retain some rights if I can manage it and make money off my idea in other ways. Film/TV Rights as well as Merchandising based on the book. (TV and Movie Merchandising would be handled as part of a separate deal.) I also had planned on taking over publishing of my own work at some point in the future, thus cutting the middleman out completely. I just a need a small nest egg to make that possible. And then it all depends on how many copies you sell. If you are only getting a dollar a book it doesn't sound like much, but if it sell a million copies then you're doing pretty good.

The hard truth of university was drilled into me by the dean on our last day of class in our exit exam. He was telling us our whole four years of bullshit in pursuit of a degree was, in his words, "us just throwing shit on a wall to see what would stick". Better was the comment from the peanut gallery, "I SAID you admin guys were there to shit on us!" But then he elaborated, saying that most jobs only require a small subset of skills to do it, but that most of them had to be quickly learned, so they battered us with shit we didn't need so we'd condition ourselves to learning on the fly.

And since I've been working, it's so true. Rama mentioned AutoCAD...I had to teach myself remedial ACAD so I could do my work. Either I updated some drawings, or the job would die and it'd be my fault. So I hunkered down with that big-assed book, found a few guys who would help me out a bit when stuck, and did it. It was quick, dirty, and completely not up to conventional drafting technique, but it was done. And that doesn't count the contracting, inspections, paperwork, many other pieces of software, etc.

All told, I'd be happier and life'd be far simpler if I were in the woods cutting and loading paper wood all day. But they don't take 6' pine anymore, so that's out. So I'm stuck doing this crap...but I remember my university experience as being a matter of not being around enough women. Where I was, most of the time was spend studying, and you just didn't deal with the opposite sex often unless you were big into the bar scene.
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Not enough women in my program either, and most of them are older or scary. There is that one girl that's ok, but the lab tech guy's been friendly with her, and I'm friends with him, so I don't want to screw up the friendship.

Outside of the program there's plenty of hot ass. And I'm not getting any. I'd ask for advice from IDE but I don't want my life's accomplishment to be sleeping with as many college chicks as possible.
I like to go down to the playground and watch the kids run and jump and scream, because they don't know I'm only using blanks.

Modern anime is a stagnant cesspool of regurgitated ideas.

I had these ideas of grandeur for my own work as well, I'm talking like five years old and thinking about making my future millions . The only reason I haven't given up writing today is that I really can't. Like I've actually said, "oh this sucks, I give up" numerous times (which actually seriously depressed me as well), but I'm compulsively think up storylines and scribbling down notes. After sketching out our friend the Burger King the other day, I got bitten by the drawing bee as well and started drawing again. Even if I never get successful or I end up being my only audience, it was something I was meant to do. I mean, I can watch tv all day barely cracking a smile and then go and read something of my own and it makes me laugh or cry. So when I started up again in 2004, I decided it's all for me.

So publishing and royalties and things like that are the farthest thing from my mind. If I ever scrounge up anything publisher worthy, I've decided I'll likely do it myself. It would be fraught with debt and on a small scale, but I'm not giving any rights to anything I've created to some douchebag in a suit.

Well you never know what's going to happen, but I've always had the feeling I was suppose to do something bigger then me for most of my life. Up till this point I just didn't know what that was, but this just feels right. Plus I've stuck with it. Most other times I think I've figured it out, a month later I've moved on to something else. That isn't the case here, however. I work on it everyday and I've been doing that almost a whole year now. Looking back I've actually been doing it longer then that. In HS I actually wrote a few stories for a friend of mine in his creative writing class. Guy wasn't exactly the creative type, and he had been loaded down with homework from other stuff so I just told him to let me write it. I also had a project I was working on then too, and then in college I was writing a screenplay instead of doing my homework. Funny thing is I was just doing it for fun. I just never considered it the right direction. I considered drawing comics for a long time, then I moved on to wanting to work in the movie business, but my senior year in HS I settled on drafting cause I thought it was a more "real" goal. That lasted all through that year, and then the year I took off, and then through most of my first year of college, but then I just couldn't do it anymore.

I wish I had kept up with my art, but unlike the writing it's not something I can just start up again without missing a beat. It's not like riding a bike for me and I have to keep drawing or else my skills do down the shitter. Right now only 1 out of 10 drawings I do are good enough to show someone else. I have been asked to do design some tattoos for people lately, and do a few logos as well...but when it comes to drawing people I just seem to have lost the touch. Which is too bad, I have a project that I'm not currently working on that will require an artist. I tired to do it myself, but came up rather short. It wasn't what I was looking for. So I don't know how I'm going to handle that one. I guess I'll have to find an artist.

It's more about Freedom then it is money to me. Sadly in the world we live in money can buy you Freedom. And I mean Creative Freedom as well as Freedom of piece of mind. Like I don't want to have to worry about how I'm going to pay the rent or the mortgage or shit like that. And if I want to buy something, I don't have to worry about if I can afford it. And of course I'd love to have where I wouldn't have to worry about selling the idea. That if no publisher wanted to touch it, or every studio refused to make it. Well then that's fine I'll just do it myself. That's what I want, but you have to have money for that.

Cottonelle?
10,000 steps down, round and round. One night on the town and I'm hellbound ... Black oceans beneath, come and swallow me. My little tower, seal my fate. Help me pay back, end their hate. Black oceans beneath, come and swallow me

but my senior year in HS I settled on drafting cause I thought it was a more "real" goal. That lasted all through that year, and then the year I took off, and then through most of my first year of college, but then I just couldn't do it anymore.
I went into graphic arts because I thought I would get something out of it. If I had any idea how bored and oppressed I'd find myself there, I never would've bothered. I never even thought about apply to anything outside of community college but for a handful of reasons. I wish I had had someone to encourage me to pursue cartooning and writing more seriously. The primary adult presence in my life, my mom, was not the best person for that. She never really understood anything I ever did. And she was so used to struggling and not having any money, she never encouraged me to aim any higher than we could afford.

Well that sucks.... My mom was always pretty supportive of me when I wanted to do comics, but my Aunt on the other hand...that was a different story. She's still on me now that I need to find a "Real" career, like her two sons that she is so god damn proud of, and stop thinking about writing all this foolish nonsense. As she calls it. So I guess in that regard she never understood me, but thankfully I didn't have to put up with it all the time. I did have some support in this thing. Now, however, most of the support I get now comes from outside my own household. If I can't say I sold "this" for "this" amount then no one seems to want to hear about it.
