Bah!
« on: Jan 18, 2006, 09:42:01 PM »
On christmas, my uncle gave my grandparents a used office computer he got for $100. He flew here and the computer had gotten shaken up, some things were loose. I gently pushed them back into their sockets and started it up. It didn't start.

I took it home and removed all PCI cards, and tried again. Nothing. I removed the memory chips and stuck them in one at a time. One memory stick didn't work, but the other one did and the computer started and ran.

Problem solved? Never.

I gently put the PCI cards back in, and the computer didn't start. I removed them and stuck them in one at a time, but the computer didn't work. I removed all the cards again, like I had done in the beginning, and the computer still won't work. No matter what I do, it refuses to start. I had gotten it to work a total of 3 times earlier but I cannot duplicate my results.

The computer's a P3 450mhz.
Option 1: Send it to a repair shop for $30, or more if it needs major repairs.
Option 2: Buy a much faster computer from the College for $50-$100
Option 3: Kill someone.

Either way, someone's going to have to spend money. My uncle spent $100 for something that doesn't work, and now either him or my grandparents have to spend more to get it to work!

Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. Why can't I fix this fucking thing? Who do I fucking kill to get it to work?

I suck at fixing computers. The internet has nothing to do with this.

The fact that you keep asking for advice in the most pathetic ways possible on this board is what makes you suck at the internet.  Surely, you could have gone elsewhere if you wanted a helpful response.

30$ to have it fixed? Somehow I doubt that. More like 30$ an hour amirite?

More, because most shops charge a fee just to take the job.

Really?  Why ask us?  When my first computer went boom, I paid nearly $400 to get it fixed and it was a worthless piece of shit.  (I just wanted my stuff off of the hard drive.)  And then when Mai wasn't working, I paid like $50 to have someone over the phone tell me to wiggle a card in.  What would I know about cheap, simple solutions?

Damn...  Did that $50 charge come in the form of a phone bill or was it a service charge?

It was the fee HP charged me because I was outside of my warranty or something.  The 400 dollars to fix my piece of shit, I regret doing.  But I had three days worth of story on Mai that hadn't been backed up nor scripted (so I couldn't go back to any notebook or anything), so was I glad to pay it if that meant I wouldn't have to rewrite it again.  Afterwards, I was told to call my uncle for computer help, which I will be doing from now on.

HP's customer service sucks my grundel.  Really, no one should ever have to call them.  They keep you on hold, keep tossing you around, then have the nerve to give you a high rate-per-minute fee...

Ha ha, that shouldn't sound hot to me but for some reason it does.

I kinda like HP's stuff, when it works.  And that seems difficult for them to accomplish seeing as both my computer and my 3-in-1 were both replaced shortly after I got them.  I get their stuff because they're inexpensive and not as cheap-ass as e-machines.  What kind of computer do you have?

I happen to have an HP myself.  They don't make bad stuff (although their low-end printers are debatable), but you always have to make sure to get an in-store warranty if you get any of it because of their lousy policies and out-sourced customer service full of know-nothings..

omg I KNOW! last time i called them i talked with some indian dude (how strange! <_< ) that had the worst accent EVER! ( mine is like 100000 better) and it took me like 2 hours to try to explain him what was the problem and for him to "try" to fix it. after 2 hours he didn't know how to repair shit and told me it was my wireless card fault. wtf

Even though it was a hassle having them not work as they should when I bought them, my computer and 3-in-1 were both replaced promptly by HP when I had problems.

I haven't really had any bad problems with HP that I don't see other computers and printers having. If they made perfect ones, they wouldn't make any money on extra parts. Though HP I just like because I suffer very little in the way of problems, and most of the time it is something I did. >.>;

A lot of call center work is fieled out to inda. It's just more cost effective because there are very educated people there willing to work for a fraction of the salary they'd get here.

I'd heard an eRumor awhile back that McDonald's was actually going to outsource some of their intercoms to India.  Sounded too ludicrous to be true, but in today's world, you never know...

Could work, especially with voip protocols, though in reality the only thing cheaper than third worlders is machines, and that's what fast food places will have next.

I think Sonic's already started using automated ordering at some of their restaurants.  It's apparently a touch-screen based system--but I have no idea what's used to make special orders (i.e. no mustard, no lettuce, etc.).  You can even use credit or gift cards right on the terminal itself.

My problem with anything you have to touch, like the car wash ticket thing or parking machines, is that I always pull up too far from them and have to lean out my window like a moron.
