- Parking my old car inside the loading dock of my cousin's club downtown & praying it doesn't flood; storing clothes; food, etc, there as it's essentially a 2-story warehouse

- Renting a car; loading all the critters inside the Jeep & rental car & heading Friday AM for the luxurious Motel 6 in Temple, TX until Sunday.

- Putting everything at least 3 feet off the ground inside the house, putting the burglar bars back on the windows, cutting our old fence panels to cover the windows, taping the glass and tacking contractor's plastic over from the inside and caulking at the bottom of the doors before we leave. We had very minimal flooding during Allison, so here's hoping.

Not that caulk will do much good if the roof is taken off. Glad I didn't finish tiling the kitchen counter.

- The college is closing early. Three o'clock. Still don't know if that means I get to leave work early as well. We (at the bookstore) aren't employees of the college so I'll just have to see.

- The Good Ol' Levi Strauss factory, nearly done funneling out all of the Katrina evacuees, is now chockful of Rita-lings.

- Many local hotels have tons of business.

- A lot of food and water is being bought up. Exactly why we need to stock up on bottled water I don't know. I tried having my mother explain this to me and it just came out as nonsense about powet outtages. With the way some people are acting, you'd think they thought they were in New Orleans... or even Houston. Come on, people.

- Local gas stations are running out of gas. This I get. Bottled water though? If you're so scared about Rita heading Alamo-bound, hang a damn bucket outside your window.

Anyway, over at the bookstore we had to move all the books on the floor and lower shelves up on higher shelves, in case the nightmare of Lake San Antonio came to pass. If it does, it's not gonna be now, as there's not one speck of rain in sight.

Well down here the water is already fucked up. A big storm fucks it up even more... and well it's why I only drink and cook with bottled water normally. That and if the powet goes out, you can lose water.

Back in the Great Flood of '98, whole parts of the city became lakes and nobody was out there scooping up bottles of water by the cartful. Katrina was such a shock these Rita people were just pissing in their pants.

All safe here! Ended up staying in town because we couldn't get to the rental car place and couldn't risk being stuck in the heat for hours with all the animals. Went to my brother's place which is a pier & beam house about 2 feet above the ground. Another friend came as well, so we had 5 people, 12 cats and 2 dogs in a 2-bedroom house. Must say that we were VERY proud of our menagerie - no yowling or barking in the middle of the night, no messes, etc. I'm a bit ashamed for underestimating them.

My sister had a tree down at their house and a few big limbs fell on our Jeep about 3 AM Saturday - I heard it and thought it was their little wooden gate getting banged around - but no damage to either house or car. Eddie was so exhausted from two 12-hour days at work, then helping get our place ready that he slept through practically everything. I'm sure I'll have a similar collapse tonight or tomorrow.

Other than the hurricane bearing down, it was like a slumber party at my brother's. As early as 7 AM Saturday we were joking that we should have done a drinking game for hurricane media clichés like "hunker down", "ride out the storm", "dodged a bullet", etc. Since Cat 4 & 5 hurricanes for me are like a stuck elevator for a claustrophobic, I'm hoping that this will satisfy Texas' hurricane karma for at least six more weeks.

On the plus side, we can clean the house from ceiling to floor as we're putting stuff back since half our stuff is in boxes. This is almost as bad as moving.

We never lost powet at either place, but I understand that people in outlying areas like The Woodlands, Conroe, Sugar Land, etc. had some problems. NO floods!!

Worst of it is east - Beaumont and Port Arthur got hammered. In our area, there's weird intermittent damage - a McDonald's sign in the street, almost no intact billboard ads ( a vast improvement IMO), the east/west traffic light arm 2 blocks from us now pointed north/south, and a lot of limbs. Our yard is almost a solid blanket of twigs & pine needles, but we're waiting until later this week to worry about that as the temp is supposed to be over 100 until Thursday when we FINALLY get some days below 90.

Oh, and how's this for luck? My alternator light came on just as I was pulling into the parking garage Wednesday, so I left it here. My brother picked me up and it took us an hour to drive 4 miles. I would have been totally screwed if my car had messed up trying to get home.

At least we're well prepared for the next time I hope doesn't come, but the loud scream you'll hear coming up I-10 next month will be me opening my American Express bill.

$400 for battery powered fans & lights. We got a bunch of each not only for us & the critters, but for my sister & brother.

About $300 at Petco for 2 extra animal crates, pads, battery powered cage fans, new litter boxes, litter, food. Glad I got the crates, though - they were $90 each, but they collapse flat for storage. Just pull up on the handle, lock the walls/door into place and go! Each held 4 cats comfortably & could handle 5-6 in a pinch. We don't have a garage; just two storage buildings, so short of covering carriers with fabric for end tables, spare space is at a premium.

About $90 bucks at Kroger on top of the regular $219 shopping trip I had made earlier in the week - double reward points for grocery stores this month!

The usual Amex stuff of dinners out, about $100 at Amazon, etc. Just indulgent crap.

At least the powet didn't go out. Most of the first grocery trip was frozen food.

The flood we had a few years back was the worst of the weather here, and it while it flooded up many low-level streets (and one golf course) it was no where near New Orleans level. We have high heat and then we have occassional ice on the roads (which sometimes closes the schools). Hence the weather here is considerably mild IMO, especially since I stay indoors most of the time anyway. We're outside of Tornado Alley, we don't get earthquakes, we don't get snow, and we're not close enough to the coast to get the worst of any hurricane.

I love living where I do....no Torandos, No Hurricances, no floods (at least where I am, go north and east and it floods) and no earthquakes (at least none of note in the last 150 years.) We do have strong winds that have destroyed buildings, but nothing like in Tornado Alley, it's far too hilly for a real Tornado to gain any real powet.

The bad storms should end in about 4-6 years. Every 20-30 years there are swells where giant hurricanes form.

Hey don't call them bad storms! It's not their fault. They were just raised in a rough neighborhood. Daddy left when they were 4 and mom had to turn trick to make ends meat. The streets where full of gangs and selling Coke was the only way to make a living.
